This is a business suit decision, not a developer decision. I can't imagine Drew and Max wanted to go through the blowback. I've no doubt that in meetings between the suits and the developers, they strongly advocated against this. But once this decision is made, the developers have to support it as the frontline person.
To be fair, just adding a new card every month would have been perfect. It provides new content, new meta and new ways of enjoying the games mechanics. The early days of Clash Royale truly was the perfect moment to play the game because of this.
I wish they instead tried to milk game by adding new type of ladder, that had 5 arena towers or no arena tower and only king tower, whole arena was larger and it was night themed, like builder base, you could only use "Night" cards, which would be enraged barbarian, sneaky archer, etc. Imagine new cards with fancy powers, every 5 level would upgrade abilities instead of stats etc. I would love that.
This absolutely feels like what you see in a lot of f2p/gacha games of, as in any game, the playerbase will naturally decrease over time, so to keep revenues consistent or even rising to please investors, you have to keep squeezing harder on those players who stick around, which will cause some to feel priced out of the game and leave, furthering the cycle.
This feels even worse than some gachas. Genshin Impact is an example which is much more f2p friendly than CR, and that's kind of sad tbh, that a gacha game is more f2p friendly than a live-action dueling game

@@LordOverSpace That's true. But even if you went full whale mode to C6 every playable 5 star character (to clarify for those that don't play Genshin, C6 means you need 7 copies of the character. On average, that takes 150 wishes for 1 character), it's be CHEAPER than getting every card in clash royale to lvl 15, which is ridiculous. It also creates an unfair advantage for massive spenders, whereas genshin doesn't have this problem because as you mentioned, no pvp.

i had metioned the new update to my brother and he said that clash royale is in the overwatch spiral. this spiral follows these steps: 1) lose players and income. 2) launch an update to get money from your players. 3) get a huge backlash. 4) repeat the cycle.
As a person who just recently hit lvl 14 on a ton of cards it was super exciting! The thought of having max cards kept me going and made me want to use different and new decks, now that lvl 15 is added the devs are forcing me to focus on 1 deck again as I need high lvl cards to compete. But with how long the road is for 15 is not exciting but just overwhelming making me not even wanna play anymore :( Note: I’ve been playing since global and seen all the ups and downs but I’ve never really considered to stop playing until now

Whenever they released the exchange rates for Elite Cards it had my jaw absolutely to the floor. All I saw when it came out was people praising the update when they couldn't see the clear cash-grab of the entire thing. Literal sheeps.

Honestly it already feels like a micro transaction hell. I've been seeing non-stop offers in my shop for months now. It's absolutely insane how often I see them at this point. I recently found this channel after getting back into the game this week. And I'd already thought that the addition of level 14 was a problem. So seeing them add yet another level feels REALLY bad. Specially with the nerfed progression. Ladder and clan wars get more and more painful than they originally were because these are actually months or even years added of extra progression grind to a f2p
Just subbed man. Thank you for keeping it real. I had a sinking feeling a few years ago when they started pumping micro transactions that it was the beginning of the end. Maybe not the end of Clash Royale, just the end of a reasonable balance between player satisfaction and profits. The last two updates alone are such a massive swing in the wrong direction that it seems they're committed to putting a brick on the gas pedal of micros they don't much care about balance at all now. I have no idea if there's a way for fans to get them to stop. That doesn't mean it's not worth the fight anyway. Thanks for being one of the voices with a platform speaking for likely quite a few of us who are sick of SC's current path.
Felt really good when I got my first deck maxed out late last year. Not only did it stop people from having a level advantage on me but I also was able to get away with some cheating interactions do to level differences. For example my max princess wouldn’t die to an under level log. It’s going to feel BS again if interactions like that feel almost permanent in high level ladder.
@@Khang-kw6od it doesn’t happen very often anymore as I’ve climbed to low 6k trophies but I maxed out princess pretty early and could consistently survive logs with her. She’s a much better card when you can’t get a -1 elixir trade off of log.
@@franpschorr3646she’s an op card when she doesn’t die to log, and a fair one when she does. They balanced the game around same levels, so when the main counter to a card becomes useless against that card there’s a main problem

I also found out they're removing the gems from the mastery for gold. Seems like a bad choice when there's other methods you could impliment to get gold instead of just removing something that was useful
and the gold is so shit....25k gold is the maximum one for a champion...imagine you play the game for hours grinding a card just for 25k gold ... the gems were useful for grand challenges or tournaments(or emotes/banners) ... L change in my opinion.. Hope they revert it

I think the worst part about this is the issue of gold. Sure this doesn’t cost any, but by removing the gold we used to get from overflowing cards, they are actually SLOWING down progression for anyone who still isn’t fully at level 14.
That.. Couldn't be farther from the truth. They tripled the amount of gold you get from most sources. I'm not one to defend supercell, but going from level 1 to 14 is easier than it's ever been now. I suppose it has the biggest impact with legendaries, but let's be honest, if you have max level legendaries, you probably don't have much upgrading left to do. That bit of overflow gold really doesn't come out to a net loss considering what has been buffed.
@@KogasaTatara514 : Max level Champions (obtained through the books of books we can’t really get anymore) made it a huge boost to progression. A few times a month, I’d get a chest with a Champion, giving me a whopping 40,000 gold. That ain’t negligible.

@@nouche almost entirely chests. I just came back to the game after about a year of being gone. Got a bunch of these gold crate things that gave up to about 30k each (speeding some up with keys I had from when I left last time, others I let go naturally with the unlock speed boost), got a big chunk of the pass completed, played a few challenges, and completed a bunch of masteries in the 7x elixir mode. That's most of it, I think.
EVERYONE DO NOT UPGRADE YOUR CARDS TO LEVEL 15! Supercell will only listen if their “data” shows that we don’t like leveling up cards, so we have to band together and show them that this isn’t the way. They need to add more useful, fun, unique features to keep this game alive, not shitty cash grabs and pointless features. Shoutout to all creators taking stand for the game we all love.
They will benefit though, you're fodder for people who upgrade it to 15 and get that advantage. People will recommend the game because a lot of people refuse to hit 15 but if you hit it you'll have an advantage and fun time. Especially the whales who are even encouraged by their now advantage against you.

@@Buglin_Burger7878that’s the problem, lvl 15 is a problem because of how long the grind takes and how disadvantaged people are against those who spend, which again brings up Supercell’s core problems of their game products, Cash Grabs. This is why I left this game at the beginning of 2023 after 7 full years of playing this game because the company can never seem to understand the fact that many people like myself don’t have the money to spend every time in every little thing, that goes from major benefits to a loss on everything. As a matter of fact, it’s just not worth it no matter what the price is, the fact they plan on doing this just to get more money is sickening.
Easy solution: For any cards received when that card is level 14 (or maxxed), you get wild cards instead. You can progress the same level 14 card you received in the chest, or decide to level up other cards. For example, you open a giant chest and get 30 giants, but your giant is level 14, so it gives you a choice (kind of like the lightning chests), of whether to add those 30 giant cards to your level 14 giant, or to convert them to 30 rare wild cards to be used on some other rare card. If your giant is completely maxxed at level 15, it would automatically convert the 30 giant cards into 30 rare wild cards. Done. It still gives us a more passive feeling to maxxing out your cards, and makes the last stretch of the grind less stressful rather than more. Still a grind, of course, and more expensive than the previous level, but less stressful and depressing.

Since watching your videos, I've been considering picking up the game again, but I haven't played for nearly 3 years and I'm now really behind in card levels. Now that they're adding another whole level, I don't really want to get to that grind to get back to the upper ranks. It’s insane that this isn’t just bad but will literally KILL the game. I’ve been an active player for over 7 years and I’ve never seen such a bad move from supercell. And they did a lot of bad things.
Level 15 is a nice idea. I'm like a maxed player except for two champions and i have literally nothing to upgrade anymore. They just need to lower the required cards to upgrade a card. It should have been 20k for just each card, not 50k.

Also why is no one talking about the mastery change? Clash royal is literally taking gems away from mastery and putting gold in, when literally you don’t even need gold for level 15. Great for slowing progression.

I stopped playing when level 14 was introduced. Sometimes I boot the game up again, am instantly disappointed to see what it has become and quit again after a few rounds.
It looks like a pretty rough situation coming from an outside perspective. Seeing how much your devs communicate is probably a pretty good sign for you guys so i hope all this community outrage gets them to listen and make changes for you guys. I will say coming from an old Overwatch fan be cautious though, our devs once did genuinely give af about us, but thanks to corporate and investors now they still care, but they only really care about the whales now. Again not saying supercell is blizzard by any means, but it's happened to a lot of us f2p gamers so just be careful you know?

This whole system is, by far, the most pay-to-win thing supercell has ever done. Your choices here are to quite literally play the game nonstop for years, or pay a VERY hefty total price. This company is seriously starting to make EA look affordable and consumer-friendly.

The truth is that even though all of these updates are very much disliked by a lot of people, people will eventually get tired of complaining and will become used to the changes, which is exactly what supercell wants and plans.
Yeah, it's kind of strange that elite would have no connection to evolution. They should've just focused on evolutions because that's the only upgrade that makes a huge difference, and it only applies to a few cards right now. I do hope they back out of level 15 or change it in a way to make it WAY easier than initially.

As I said under multiple videos, I think they could do the same thing as CoC with new levels to make "content", which is a very weak way to do it as in CoC you don't have only new building levels, but new troops, super troops and more fire capacity and defense, which balances the whole thing. You only have to grind a bit to go from broke to full, especially with events. But CR is far from CoC. cards are way expensive and you can't grind that easily. Progression is super slow, so adding a new level just makes it unfair for new players
why is there levels in clash royale i still don’t know. Every new level adds 0 content and i don’t see how supercell can actually think people like upgrading cards for the shit of it
Another reason level 16 is definitely coming; It’s in the game. Remember when the mirror got the +2 levels buff? They had to code level 16 in for all cards (minus champions and the mirror itself). It’s almost 100% in the game code already, so why waste it when you can use it to rip off the players again?
Tf are you on about, lol. A “level” is super easy to just code recursively, since it’s just a flat 10% stat boost. Technically, they could add lvl 20 with just as much work as lvl 16 would take.
after the previous bad updates I decided that after playing this game for almost 6 years it's a time for me to quit. I still love this game very much and want to play it, but when we see that the devs doesn't care for their users, and literly lie and deceive them, I lost my trust in them.

You really took in perspective on how long upgrading your cards is gonna take. If currently got 70% of my cards maxed and 4% at level 13 .... and I've been playing since 2016 ....
I have an idea, more like a mid solution, between what supercell wants and what the players want. What if every player could only get a single card of their deck to lv 15? That would make that card really "elite", and that wouldn't become a source of pure frustation, you would deal with only one card that's overlevelled and it would bring more strategy into thinking about which card gets the most benefits from being +1 lv than the opponents' cards. I feel like that would bring incentive to grind but not the necessity of having all the cards maxed out. The whales that spend money would have only a single card overlevelled (which is a lot, i know, but far better than having 8 of them), but this might change in a matter of a season, since you said that getting rewards grants almost 2 cards per season. They could make that the first season you can decide for free which card to make "elite", so that you don't miss out the feature while grinding for a stable one What do you guys think?

Mirror can be great, but also fireball (that oneshots wizard etc), graveyard (can't be countered by skeletons, skarmies and bats), bats/skellies... There are many cards that can really be "elite" and really change the game. I am currently still believing it's a great idea, sounds selfish but i'm actually more concerned about the game. I hope devs could listen more to the suggestion the players have, instead of being so blind... On the other hand there are many infuriated players that cannot have a decent discussion, i guess we should all work on that

The fact that I'm having more fun playing Boom Beach due to the game's recent buff to progression really says a lot about the situation Clash Royale is in.
I think card evolutionary are great in concept. I think they’re implementation isn’t so good. I like the idea of being able to unlock and upgrade a card evolution like you would unlock a normal card, but instead of the evolution being an objectively better version of that card, its more like a different version of that card. If like existing card evolutions it improves cards, it could just offer a greater cost, like multiplying skeletons costing 3 elixir, or goblin mortar costing 5. Alternatively it could be a weaker version of that card, like a lumberjack without its rage for 3 elixir or 2 stab goblins for 1 elixir, or just rebalanced, Like having a main wizard which is high damage but low health, and a different wizard which is high health but lower damage. all of these Card evolutions could be played at any time instead of the regular version if you chose to. The benefit of this would be to create psudo new cards whilst buffing existing cards by increasing their versatility instead of making them stronger, which would allow a card to fill different roles depending on what you needed it for.
The thing is, having a million different currencies is exactly how free-to-play games work to manipulate players via confusing them. Their reasoning is if they confuse higher level players enough, the players will spend money just to skip the confusing mess the developers made. It works in gacha games, destiny clones, etc.

I've no doubt that in meetings between the suits and the developers, they strongly advocated against this. But once this decision is made, the developers have to support it as the frontline person.

To be fair, just adding a new card every month would have been perfect. It provides new content, new meta and new ways of enjoying the games mechanics. The early days of Clash Royale truly was the perfect moment to play the game because of this.
I wish they instead tried to milk game by adding new type of ladder, that had 5 arena towers or no arena tower and only king tower, whole arena was larger and it was night themed, like builder base, you could only use "Night" cards, which would be enraged barbarian, sneaky archer, etc. Imagine new cards with fancy powers, every 5 level would upgrade abilities instead of stats etc. I would love that.

This absolutely feels like what you see in a lot of f2p/gacha games of, as in any game, the playerbase will naturally decrease over time, so to keep revenues consistent or even rising to please investors, you have to keep squeezing harder on those players who stick around, which will cause some to feel priced out of the game and leave, furthering the cycle.

This feels even worse than some gachas. Genshin Impact is an example which is much more f2p friendly than CR, and that's kind of sad tbh, that a gacha game is more f2p friendly than a live-action dueling game

@@LordOverSpace That's true. But even if you went full whale mode to C6 every playable 5 star character (to clarify for those that don't play Genshin, C6 means you need 7 copies of the character. On average, that takes 150 wishes for 1 character), it's be CHEAPER than getting every card in clash royale to lvl 15, which is ridiculous.
It also creates an unfair advantage for massive spenders, whereas genshin doesn't have this problem because as you mentioned, no pvp.

i had metioned the new update to my brother and he said that clash royale is in the overwatch spiral.
this spiral follows these steps:
1) lose players and income.
2) launch an update to get money from your players.
3) get a huge backlash.
4) repeat the cycle.
As a person who just recently hit lvl 14 on a ton of cards it was super exciting! The thought of having max cards kept me going and made me want to use different and new decks, now that lvl 15 is added the devs are forcing me to focus on 1 deck again as I need high lvl cards to compete. But with how long the road is for 15 is not exciting but just overwhelming making me not even wanna play anymore :(

On one hand, lots of other games would kill for the kind of developer outreach and transparency that CR has, but because of that it's the community's responsibility to make their voices heard to make this game the best it can be. It's really important to make these kinds of videos so the devs can make a great game instead of turning it into micro transaction hell.

I recently found this channel after getting back into the game this week. And I'd already thought that the addition of level 14 was a problem. So seeing them add yet another level feels REALLY bad. Specially with the nerfed progression. Ladder and clan wars get more and more painful than they originally were because these are actually months or even years added of extra progression grind to a f2p
Just subbed man. Thank you for keeping it real. I had a sinking feeling a few years ago when they started pumping micro transactions that it was the beginning of the end. Maybe not the end of Clash Royale, just the end of a reasonable balance between player satisfaction and profits. The last two updates alone are such a massive swing in the wrong direction that it seems they're committed to putting a brick on the gas pedal of micros they don't much care about balance at all now. I have no idea if there's a way for fans to get them to stop. That doesn't mean it's not worth the fight anyway. Thanks for being one of the voices with a platform speaking for likely quite a few of us who are sick of SC's current path.
Felt really good when I got my first deck maxed out late last year. Not only did it stop people from having a level advantage on me but I also was able to get away with some cheating interactions do to level differences. For example my max princess wouldn’t die to an under level log. It’s going to feel BS again if interactions like that feel almost permanent in high level ladder.

@@Khang-kw6od it doesn’t happen very often anymore as I’ve climbed to low 6k trophies but I maxed out princess pretty early and could consistently survive logs with her. She’s a much better card when you can’t get a -1 elixir trade off of log.

I also found out they're removing the gems from the mastery for gold. Seems like a bad choice when there's other methods you could impliment to get gold instead of just removing something that was useful

I think the worst part about this is the issue of gold. Sure this doesn’t cost any, but by removing the gold we used to get from overflowing cards, they are actually SLOWING down progression for anyone who still isn’t fully at level 14.
That.. Couldn't be farther from the truth. They tripled the amount of gold you get from most sources. I'm not one to defend supercell, but going from level 1 to 14 is easier than it's ever been now. I suppose it has the biggest impact with legendaries, but let's be honest, if you have max level legendaries, you probably don't have much upgrading left to do. That bit of overflow gold really doesn't come out to a net loss considering what has been buffed.
@@KogasaTatara514 : Max level Champions (obtained through the books of books we can’t really get anymore) made it a huge boost to progression. A few times a month, I’d get a chest with a Champion, giving me a whopping 40,000 gold. That ain’t negligible.
@@nouche a few times a month you get 40k? In the past few days I've made over 200k gold just by playing. No maxed champions needed. Hell, mine are all level 11 minus the golden knight, at 12.

@@nouche almost entirely chests. I just came back to the game after about a year of being gone. Got a bunch of these gold crate things that gave up to about 30k each (speeding some up with keys I had from when I left last time, others I let go naturally with the unlock speed boost), got a big chunk of the pass completed, played a few challenges, and completed a bunch of masteries in the 7x elixir mode. That's most of it, I think.

Supercell will only listen if their “data” shows that we don’t like leveling up cards, so we have to band together and show them that this isn’t the way. This is why I left this game at the beginning of 2023 after 7 full years of playing this game because the company can never seem to understand the fact that many people like myself don’t have the money to spend every time in every little thing, that goes from major benefits to a loss on everything. As a matter of fact, it’s just not worth it no matter what the price is, the fact they plan on doing this just to get more money is sickening.

@@mustafaLY2631 It isn't locked behind level 15, so once they get one evo card they're good for that part.
Easy solution: For any cards received when that card is level 14 (or maxxed), you get wild cards instead. You can progress the same level 14 card you received in the chest, or decide to level up other cards. For example, you open a giant chest and get 30 giants, but your giant is level 14, so it gives you a choice (kind of like the lightning chests), of whether to add those 30 giant cards to your level 14 giant, or to convert them to 30 rare wild cards to be used on some other rare card. If your giant is completely maxxed at level 15, it would automatically convert the 30 giant cards into 30 rare wild cards. Done. It still gives us a more passive feeling to maxxing out your cards, and makes the last stretch of the grind less stressful rather than more. Still a grind, of course, and more expensive than the previous level, but less stressful and depressing.

I think you make a lot of good points. Since watching your videos, I've been considering picking up the game again, but I haven't played for nearly 3 years and I'm now really behind in card levels. Now that they're adding another whole level, I don't really want to get to that grind to get back to the upper ranks.

Level 15 is a nice idea. I'm like a maxed player except for two champions and i have literally nothing to upgrade anymore. They just need to lower the required cards to upgrade a card. It should have been 20k for just each card, not 50k.

Also why is no one talking about the mastery change? Clash royal is literally taking gems away from mastery and putting gold in, when literally you don’t even need gold for level 15. Great for slowing progression.

I stopped playing when level 14 was introduced. Sometimes I boot the game up again, am instantly disappointed to see what it has become and quit again after a few rounds.
It looks like a pretty rough situation coming from an outside perspective. Seeing how much your devs communicate is probably a pretty good sign for you guys so i hope all this community outrage gets them to listen and make changes for you guys. I will say coming from an old Overwatch fan be cautious though, our devs once did genuinely give af about us, but thanks to corporate and investors now they still care, but they only really care about the whales now. Again not saying supercell is blizzard by any means, but it's happened to a lot of us f2p gamers so just be careful you know?

As I said under multiple videos, I think they could do the same thing as CoC with new levels to make "content", which is a very weak way to do it as in CoC you don't have only new building levels, but new troops, super troops and more fire capacity and defense, which balances the whole thing. You only have to grind a bit to go from broke to full, especially with events. But CR is far from CoC. cards are way expensive and you can't grind that easily. Progression is super slow, so adding a new level just makes it unfair for new players
I agree. Brawl Stars released an update where they made 49 gem skins 79 gems to simplify stuff, but warned the playerbase a week before

Another reason level 16 is definitely coming; It’s in the game. Remember when the mirror got the +2 levels buff? They had to code level 16 in for all cards (minus champions and the mirror itself). It’s almost 100% in the game code already, so why waste it when you can use it to rip off the players again?

You really took in perspective on how long upgrading your cards is gonna take. If currently got 70% of my cards maxed and 4% at level 13 .... and I've been playing since 2016 ....
I have an idea, more like a mid solution, between what supercell wants and what the players want.
What if every player could only get a single card of their deck to lv 15? That would make that card really "elite", and that wouldn't become a source of pure frustation, you would deal with only one card that's overlevelled and it would bring more strategy into thinking about which card gets the most benefits from being +1 lv than the opponents' cards.
I feel like that would bring incentive to grind but not the necessity of having all the cards maxed out. The whales that spend money would have only a single card overlevelled (which is a lot, i know, but far better than having 8 of them), but this might change in a matter of a season, since you said that getting rewards grants almost 2 cards per season. They could make that the first season you can decide for free which card to make "elite", so that you don't miss out the feature while grinding for a stable one

@@skotinoulis4745 I thought about it and there are many cards that would benefit a lot from being overlevelled. Mirror can be great, but also fireball (that oneshots wizard etc), graveyard (can't be countered by skeletons, skarmies and bats), bats/skellies...
There are many cards that can really be "elite" and really change the game. I am currently still believing it's a great idea, sounds selfish but i'm actually more concerned about the game.
I hope devs could listen more to the suggestion the players have, instead of being so blind... On the other hand there are many infuriated players that cannot have a decent discussion, i guess we should all work on that

the fact that you can buy all 50,000 cards for $6.99 in the shop just ruins the whole system for me i’d be lying if I said I haven’t done this at least a few times to get cards in my deck to max so I can continue to progress

I think card evolutionary are great in concept. I think they’re implementation isn’t so good. I like the idea of being able to unlock and upgrade a card evolution like you would unlock a normal card, but instead of the evolution being an objectively better version of that card, its more like a different version of that card. If like existing card evolutions it improves cards, it could just offer a greater cost, like multiplying skeletons costing 3 elixir, or goblin mortar costing 5. Alternatively it could be a weaker version of that card, like a lumberjack without its rage for 3 elixir or 2 stab goblins for 1 elixir, or just rebalanced, Like having a main wizard which is high damage but low health, and a different wizard which is high health but lower damage. all of these Card evolutions could be played at any time instead of the regular version if you chose to. The benefit of this would be to create psudo new cards whilst buffing existing cards by increasing their versatility instead of making them stronger, which would allow a card to fill different roles depending on what you needed it for.

The thing is, having a million different currencies is exactly how free-to-play games work to manipulate players via confusing them. Their reasoning is if they confuse higher level players enough, the players will spend money just to skip the confusing mess the developers made. It works in gacha games, destiny clones, etc.
