When I was six years old, I was still playing on my NES when for Christmas my mom and dad got me a Sega Genesis for Christmas. And with the Sega Genesis came a game that I remember all too well... it was a blue hedgehog with sneakers that was fast, quick and not like Mario that's for sure. Yep, it was Sonic the Hedgehog and it came with the Model-1 Sega Genesis. I had that Model 1 for years until it broke down and my brother got a Model 2 years later. Its too bad that Sonic is in serious life support but I will never forget this... the game that got me into Sonic in the first place... Sonic the Hedgehog.In Sonic the Hedgehog, there are six zones each with three acts. In two of the three acts, Sonic collects rings, bashes badniks and hopefully reaches the goal so he can hopefully go to the bonus stage and get a chaos emerald.
In the third act however, Sonic must go up against the likes of Dr. Ivo Robotnik but let's call him Dr. Eggman. Dr. Eggman is an evil scientist with an IQ of 300 and he wishes to turn the peaceful animals into slaves for his robotic empire... but one hedgehog isn't gonna let that happen and that's Sonic.I've talked about enough... just watch this. It isn't a speed run or anything since I can clear this game in basically an hour or two but... this is me wanting to relive my youth. Here's the first zone... Green Hill.

I'll never forget the first time seeing this game on a display at the Northtown Mall (Minnesota)
It looked like paradise compared to the gray, bone chilling winter we were enduring.
Most Sonic and Sega music is great, but there was something spine tingling about hearing these Sonic 1 tunes on fancy headphones.
These belong right up there with anything prestigious composers came up with. Seriously, Amadeus, Bach, Beethoven, etc. Would probably have enjoyed this.

The first Sonic the Hedgehog game expressed it best. Sonic the Hedgehog is not about just going fast. It's about going slow, fast, slow, fast. It's actually a videogame exploration of the contrast between the slow, ordered, way of ancient Japanese rural life and the fast, unpredictable, nature of modern Japanese city/industrialised life. See the second zone, for example, Marble Zone. It's fairly entirely deliberately slow paced the entire level in its ancient setting. Sonic's sassy attitude and environments are also to appeal to the west. Green Hill Zone has strikingly distinctive music - it's kind of beautifully quirkily pensive and melancholic for an opening level music. As the song progresses, it feels like an entire journey within a song, as if Sega were putting their best foot forward in implying there's depth beyond the surface here. Sonic doesn't have a job or romantic interest here - he's more or less a metaphor for pinball game Sega arcade fun meets cool and crisp looking platform game meets rollercoaster enthusiast. The unpredictable blended with the deliberately predictable (no typical videogame-like puzzle mechanics for Sonic). Overall, it kind of fulfilled being Sega's Mario from the very get go. It didn't aim for Mario's puzzle elements but it summed up Sega's cutting edge in graphical detail, processor speed, modernity, and dynamic visuals (I was in love with the 3D effect of the palm trees and the undulating movement of the rope bridge with the impressive robotic pirhana fish) that have a real life feel to them, as opposed to Nintendo's more standard lowfi cartoon aesthetic of the NES age. Even Super Mario World was relatively low key visually- the SNES's ambient music and large sprites still didn't jump off the page as much as Sonic and it really took until 1994's Donkey Kong Country by Rare for the SNES to have a cool kind of Sonic-like game.
