Peter Dombrovskis’ (7:30) images were also hugely impactful from a conservation standpoint. It is said that his most famous image, “Morning Mist”, lead to a shift in public awareness which helped to prevent the Franklin River from being dammed, thus ensuring the preservation of a pristine area of Tasmanian wilderness. Being a "young" photographer and mostly influenced by what I see online (from social media) one of the things I find so deeply fascinating is all that old gold from photographers who're not really online and have learned photography through another "school of thought". Beautiful suggestions to look into :)
Are you saying that I'm old?.......lol. For sure I think a lot can be learnt from these photographers, especially composition and light. I was going to include all of the usual favs from social media sites but I think most photographers especially the younger crowd already know all of these people so figured I would try to highlight the old crusty ones. lol cheers, Mads!
Great to see you mention Peter Dombrovskis, he is an absolute legend in my home State - Tasmania. Peter lived in Tasmania and has inspired so many photographers here and he was a very strong conservationist who fought very hard to save Tasmania's wilderness. His photo's from the South West National Park was very instrumental in it being declared a World Heritage Area. His photo which should be in that book "Rock Island Bend" was the iconic image used by conservationist to "Save the Franklin River". This place was to be flooded by a dam. I hope you manage to get to Australia at some stage, if you do make sure you get to Tasmania, the worlds best Temperate Rain Forest and Old Growth Forest.
I was introduced to Peter's work many years ago, and he is truly a legend. I've unfortunately, never been to Tasmania, but have seen much of Victoria and NT.
An update from last week. the first of three books have arrived. A signed copy of Holmes' Natural Light in mint condition, an superb copy of Cramer's Yosemite, and Natures Chaos. The first two are stunning. Arizona arrives in two days. Thanks again for recording the video and sharing your books. These are indeed truly inspirational. They will be both treasured books and inspirational images.

I work in an office for 50+ hours a week, and flit between occasional hobbies of motorbiking and photography in-between. You inspire me to do more of what I want, and to do it better. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing some of your favorite photo books. I am familiar with several of the books you showcased and own a few of them as well. The good news on many of these books is that they can be picked up for pennies on the dollar on the used book market despite costing a lot of money when first published. As an ex mountaineer one of my favorite landscape photographers is Galen Rowell and I own almost every book he ever published. While they are all both awesome and inspiring one of my favorites is Bay Area Wild. This book covering the Bay Area of California was inspired by Galen's wife Barbara who pointed out to Galen that while he had chronicled some of the most beautiful wild areas in the world he had left unchronicled the area he perhaps knew best having grown up in Berkeley. Guilty, as many photographers are, of having not seen the forest for the trees Galen set out to truly explore the Bay Area and the book of photos he produced is stunning. Having lived in the Bay Area for 3 years in the early 70s I both recognized many of his images and felt great regret that I had not myself more fully explored the area's photographic potential while living there. I also have several of William Neil's wonderful books and have spent many enjoyable hours studying his images. Like you, I prefer books over screen images but I should note that Neil's books are available from him as eBooks for a very reasonable price and they are beautifully produced.
I was taken by the number of photographers you follow that assisted Ansel Adams, especially in the darkroom. Many of your selections are also conducting workshops.A couple of your favorites are active in environmental causes. I follow your channel because it is so inspiring.
Great to hear you mention the much revered photographer, Peter Dombrovskis, Adam. He is famous for imaging much of Tasmania (my home) with striking images captured on a 5x4 camera (I used to have one of those - so hard to focus in dim light!). Great video. Hi Adam, missed out on the first edition of your book, but it was great to see you opted for the second edition as well (already placed my order :) ). One of my favourite photographers is Bruce Percy from Scotland and my favourite book has to be the Altiplano. I also really like the work of Theo Bosboom, he has a very nice book Shaped by the Sea. Slightly different to above I also think Genesis by Sebastiao Salgado is a wonderful book if you're into monochrome. Looking forward to the day your book and the print come on my doorstep. I think it's really important supporting artists we admire and look up to.

Congratulations on the Quiet Light book. One classic book I love is Galen Rowell’s “Mountain Light: In Search of the Dynamic Landscape.” That was one of the first books to draw me distinctly to landscape and travel photography.
Of all the great photography out there, really good black and white like John Sexton's work is what spins my prop. Maybe because back in college, in the dark room, my B&W sucked and I never was able to do a good print. Today, on the computer and with the inkjet I've done one or two that I like. A woodworker I follow does his own photography and because of his internship in publishing produces some very very nice B&W work. Alas; for him, it's just a tool to show his woodworking. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing your insight on photographers and their books. I live in Colorado and know John Fielder personally. I recently retired but was the general manager of a distribution center who stored and shipped his books and calendars. John just recently published a new book called Colorado Black on White. This is a complete change for John since the images are all black and white. Highly recommended and one you may want to consider picking up.
Nice to see Michael Orton on your list. I've been a member of the Abbotsford Photo Arts Club for nearly 30yrs and Michael was one of the keynote speakers (back in the early 90's when he wasn't as well known as today) for our annual seminar and the only one I can remember getting a standing ovation at the end of his presentation. Considering we had the likes of Galen Rowell and Freeman Patterson as keynotes over the years this was quite an achievement. His whole presentation was on the sandwiching of slides to produce the Orton effect, very inspiring in the days before Photoshop. I actually have a signed copy of Once Upon an Island. Chris Harris has some great inspirational books also of the Cariboo Chilcotin area of BC. Another great video as usual, thanks for the effort you put into these.
It was fun to see you flip through the books....while your work is so fabulously unique you can pick out the influences to your work. As an aside have you considered a quiet light sew on patch (small version of the sticker)???

Hi Adam, wonderful video. It really surprised me when you held up your new book (Quite Light). Did you know that (John Sexton's) first book was entitled "Quite Light". As a matter-of-fact he was the one who coined the phrase and actually has dedicated most of his photographic career to it's nature, photographing in earnest the time before sunrise and after sunset. I remember him always stating "it was almost dark" when he took certain shots. Also, I remember photographing a small waterfall that was part of a wonderful photo he did up in (Happy Isles) Yosemite Valley and him, thinking I was duplicating it, came over saying "Copy Right infringement", in a joking manner, then saying "no" let me see what you got; Polaroid. Upon seeing I had a different vision, just a small fall in the upper Merced River, his beautiful almost dreamy renditond included the whole river and forrest around it, went "Oh".
Fabulous episode. I sat here with pad n pencil scribbling notes . The loss of a complete set of glass filters (they fell from my bag into a fast flowing gorge yesterday) will curtail my book buying for a while but I will be sure to keep some of these names/titles in mind in the future. I actually picked up a copy of Jospeh Holmes' Natural Light (complete with slipcase, signed and a print inside) after you mentioning him in a previous episode, many thanks for that. I too love looking through books and as you know I have your's on my bookshelf, it's a cracker. It sits alongside 2 other newly published works (well in the last 18 months) from Photographers Alex Nail *Northwest* * Colin Bell *Healing* if you get chance I think you would like both.. AN covers teh NW part of Scotland and is full of real grand vistas whilst's Colin's is a selection of landscape & more intimate woodland photography. Atb Alan
A very inspirational video this week sir. I did indeed look up a few that I hadn't heard of before. I of course living in the states used to hear about Ansel Adams and grew up with most of his ideas on images. I too was very stark in the darkroom. Whites being white and blacks being black. Thank you for enriching my views on others, will enjoy reading these throughout the winter...
Love this video! I also have many of these books (Burkett, Porter, Borges, Neil, Dykinga, etc.) Burkett's prints can be seen in the "Photography West Gallery" in Carmel, California and they are wondrous to behold. I was told in 2016 that his supply of paper was pretty much gone, but that came from the gallery owner who may well have been feeding me a line to force me to spend my money........I did not.
I 2meet Peter Dombrovskis early in 83 as a 23yr old visual arts student down from th mainland to document&protest against the daming. His inspiration is understandable after visiting Tasmania for th 1st time. Cheerz from AU on Fire..
I have a suggestion for you, Craig Potton. He's a New Zealand photographer, publisher and conservationist and I think his images from around New Zealand would give you some idea of the wide variety of landscapes we have in our small country. Might even tempt you down this way :D
Hi Adam, really enjoy all your vlogs. If you like Peter Dombrovskis you should check out Olegas Truchanas who was Peter's mentor. He was born in Lithuania and moved to Tassie after the war. He was a great photographer and campaigner against all the damming in Tassie. The two of them are legends in Australia, it is worth looking for a doco called "Wildness" released a few years back. Unfortunately Olegas died kayaking on, I think, the Franklin river. These two guys were migrants and they could see the beauty of Tassie which a lot of the locals couldn't see. It was like the Austrian Gustav Weindorfer who saw the beauty of Cradle Mountain in Tassie and bought up land there which eventually became the world renowned Cradle Mt National Park!

Happy New Year Adam! I bought Alex Nail's book "Northwest" last year in which he has photographed the Torridon and Assynt in the far north of Scotland. It's an absolute gem, beautifully bound and embodies a huge body of work and effort on Alex's part as that area deserves much respect due to its isolation especially in winter. Hi Adam, I just wanted to make a comment about Peter Dombrovskis and the book you mentioned. I am a photographer based in Tasmania, Australia, and Peter Dombrovskis is a huge inspiration to us here in Australia, not just in regards to photography, but also photography as a tool for conservation. Peter's photographs helped save the incredible wild Franklin River from damming in the early 1980's. Regarding the book you displayed: as you pointed out it is a poorer print quality than you'd hope for a photographer is recognised in the International Hall of Fame. It is a very recent publication, mass produced and is very cheap - both in purchase cost and quality, which is a terrible shame. I can assure that the previous publications of his work are of very high quality. I urge you to seek out the book 'Simply' which is probably the next easiest one to get - although it won't be cheap. You will then get appreciation for his work in high quality. In general his books are highly sought after and prized possessions. The cheap new publication is a good reference of a large amount of his compositions, but not reflective of the quality of it. I think Peter would be mortified by the new book. For your info, Joe Cornish in the UK is a huge fan of Peter's work. Best regards, Nick Monk.
Yes I love books too can look at them for hours . Joe Cornish and David ward books are my favourites . Alex Nail released a cracking book on Scotlands mountains a while ago.
This video popped up on my "suggested videos" list a little while ago (even though I saw it last year when you released it, 🙄) so I watched it again. I did some looking online and found Michael Orton's book "Once Upon an Island" on Ebay and bought it. Less than $5 with free shipping! Score! Thanks for the recommendations. I love good photography books. So now, along with needing more wall space, I'm going to need a new bookshelf. 😄

I'd have to friend him and I don't normally ask to be friends with people I don't know; unless I have some sort of report with them. He has another book on Amazon. Guessing he wrote it for film use. But maybe there are some long forgotten techniques that can be adapted for digital. Who knows? Funny, I haven’t heard of any of those artist except for Michael Orton. So much content on the internet it’s easy to forget books. But you’re right, the ability to flip through pages can not be replaced. QT Luong has excellent National Park books. Greg Vaughn has a few excellent regional guide books. Last, Ron Warfield has an excellent Mount Rainier book (amongst a few others).
Interesting video. Like you, I am a great fan of John Sexton. I have two of his books; “Quiet Light” and “Listen to the Trees”. I consider the latter to be the best photography book I have ever purchased, and believe that in that book Sexton surpassed his teacher and mentor, Ansel Adams. I have also collected Michael Kenna (several books), Michael Levin, both Westons, Paul Strand, Joe Cornish, and now, Adam Gibbs. They are all regularly picked up for inspiration.

Large format seems to have always been of great importance in landscape photography over the years, maybe you should rediscover this decelerated type of photography for yourself. Prior to a recent illness he was shooting mostly large format landscapes of the Everglades. Almost exclusively black and white. His work is exquisite. Thanks again for your vlogs and Happy New Year!
Just got back from a trip to find Quiet Light waiting for me. Congratulations its a wonderful book that does justice to a uniquely gifted photographer (and a nice guy as well).
So good! Thank you for this. I am struck by how vastly different this straight forward, magnificent work is from the deluge of images we see on social media. I am also struck by how complex are the skills of editing (as In choosing photos for a book; I don’t mean digital or chemical darkroom although yes, developing is complex) and sequencing. Social media deluges us with how to take photo videos, etc. But how to select and sequence..not so much. I wish there was more of that.

Man, this is timely. I was just lamenting about the uninspiring weather conditions this time of year in Oregon and I agree with you that a good book is a great way to get some inspiration. I’m familiar with a few of the photographers mentioned, most notably, William Neill and I see he’s chimed in on this weeks video already. Another great video Adam, very enjoyable. Interesting that most of the photographers you mention I also follow and have many of the same books. It could be that I too spent many years shooting LF . I might suggest Ken Duncan (Australia) who shoots mostly 6x17 and Tom Mackie (American who lives in the UK). I once had the privilege of visiting Christopher Burkett in his studio, he's darkroom is simply amazing, and yes, he had a large stock of Cibachrome (Ilfochrome) when I visited. You can follow Jack Dynkinga on Facebook, he's pretty active there; I think he's retired from shooting LF and the last I heard he was using the D850.
Adam, I really enjoyed this! Great knowing some of the photographers that inspire you, and several have been my favorites as well. I have enjoyed the copy I have of Eliot Porter's ( In Wildness Is the Preservation of the World) that some wonderful photographer friends found and gave me. The fact that Graham Osborne's book titled "Rainforest: Ancient Realm of the Pacific Northwest" features writing by Wade Davis is just so perfect! Rchard Evans Schultes (Davis' advisor at Harvard) and Wade Davis' book "One River" have been sources of inspiration that helped fuel my pursuit of Botany in school. I may have to pick this one up!

Before Christmas I received the book "Quiet Light". This book inspires me! Books that have accompanied me for years are: Peter Gasser, "Atlas Land der Berber" or "Verschwindende Landschaften", DuMont Verlag by various photographers. I wish you good health and - of course - good light in 2020.
As another book addict I really enjoyed this post. Dombrovkis is one of my favorite landscape photographers ever and I am glad to say i was able to find a copy of his book. I finally made it to Tasmania in Nov 2019 and it is a hidden gem. Couple more of your countrymen I really like are Tim Fitzharris and Darwin Wiggett…and who could forget Freeman Patterson.

I loved hearing who inspires you, Adam. You have inspired me over the last couple of years. Outside the genre of Landscape photography I also really enjoy Alex Webb's "The Suffering of Light" .
After seeing this, I actually found a copy of Michaels book at a German reseller. Also I already have one of his books called "Photographing Creative Landscapes" which is as the title suggests more of an educational thing. ;-)
Wow, that's a lot of names Adam! I too like to hold a book and flick through it, way more than on screen. Only problems is space - I have just lost a lot of storage due to the loft being turned into a bedroom. More shelves please!
Would be nice to see a bit of Michael Kenna there, I love his book 'Huangshan'. John Blakemore and Fay Godwin also need a mention. Paul Kenny and 'Seaworks' and I love Colin Bell's book 'Healing'. I guess David Ward should have a mention too, for 'Landscape Within' and Landscape Beyond. Although not strictly Landscape, I personally get great satisfaction from Joseph Koudelka and have a copy of 'Gypsies'. I would love to get Joseph Soudek's work in print, particularly 'Sad Landscapes'. Hope this inspires a few folks.
I haven't read all the comments but can I just say that that is the worst possible book to own about Peter Dombrovskis and his work. It is good to get a rough (very rough!) idea of his work and as you say the print quality isn't great at all. In fact it is awful and doesn't not represent him well at all. Look out for "on the Mountain', 'Simply', 'In the Forest' as books to get a much better and more accurate portrayal of what he did. They are pricey though as all out of print now. Always great to see your videos and book reviews need more coverage on youtube I feel. Especially for photography. Loving your own book and hoping to get your accompanying print framed for the house soon.
What can I say? the book was a generous gift from a couple of fellow photographers and if I haven't received it I probably wouldn't have heard of Peter. Perhaps you would like to share some titles of Peters that do showcase his fine work in a better light?

Very good subject for a video and inspiring to watch. In thinking over my own collection, it occurs to me that my most loved books might give me a better understanding of the types of images I would like to take for myself. The books that I love have people in them with their environments, but the photos I take usually don't. Perhaps I need to look in some new directions. Thanks for your guidance.

If I had to choose only one photographer and one book it would be The Creation from austrian Ernst Haas. This guy isn't living anymore since over 30 years but his photography remains so much over the top and actual. For me he is the most painter of all photographers...

Thanks for sharing some of your favorite photo books. I am familiar with several of the books you showcased and own a few of them as well. The good news on many of these books is that they can be picked up for pennies on the dollar on the used book market despite costing a lot of money when first published. As an ex mountaineer one of my favorite landscape photographers is Galen Rowell and I own almost every book he ever published. While they are all both awesome and inspiring one of my favorites is Bay Area Wild. This book covering the Bay Area of California was inspired by Galen's wife Barbara who pointed out to Galen that while he had chronicled some of the most beautiful wild areas in the world he had left unchronicled the area he perhaps knew best having grown up in Berkeley. Guilty, as many photographers are, of having not seen the forest for the trees Galen set out to truly explore the Bay Area and the book of photos he produced is stunning. Having lived in the Bay Area for 3 years in the early 70s I both recognized many of his images and felt great regret that I had not myself more fully explored the area's photographic potential while living there. I also have several of William Neil's wonderful books and have spent many enjoyable hours studying his images. Like you, I prefer books over screen images but I should note that Neil's books are available from him as eBooks for a very reasonable price and they are beautifully produced.
I was taken by the number of photographers you follow that assisted Ansel Adams, especially in the darkroom. Many of your selections are also conducting workshops.A couple of your favorites are active in environmental causes. I follow your channel because it is so inspiring.

Great to hear you mention the much revered photographer, Peter Dombrovskis, Adam. He is famous for imaging much of Tasmania (my home) with striking images captured on a 5x4 camera (I used to have one of those - so hard to focus in dim light!). Great video. Hi Adam, missed out on the first edition of your book, but it was great to see you opted for the second edition as well (already placed my order :) ). One of my favourite photographers is Bruce Percy from Scotland and my favourite book has to be the Altiplano. I also really like the work of Theo Bosboom, he has a very nice book Shaped by the Sea. Slightly different to above I also think Genesis by Sebastiao Salgado is a wonderful book if you're into monochrome.

Congratulations on the Quiet Light book. One classic book I love is Galen Rowell’s “Mountain Light: In Search of the Dynamic Landscape.” That was one of the first books to draw me distinctly to landscape and travel photography.

Of all the great photography out there, really good black and white like John Sexton's work is what spins my prop. Maybe because back in college, in the dark room, my B&W sucked and I never was able to do a good print. Today, on the computer and with the inkjet I've done one or two that I like. A woodworker I follow does his own photography and because of his internship in publishing produces some very very nice B&W work. Alas; for him, it's just a tool to show his woodworking. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing your insight on photographers and their books. I live in Colorado and know John Fielder personally. I recently retired but was the general manager of a distribution center who stored and shipped his books and calendars. John just recently published a new book called Colorado Black on White. This is a complete change for John since the images are all black and white. Highly recommended and one you may want to consider picking up.
Nice to see Michael Orton on your list. I've been a member of the Abbotsford Photo Arts Club for nearly 30yrs and Michael was one of the keynote speakers (back in the early 90's when he wasn't as well known as today) for our annual seminar and the only one I can remember getting a standing ovation at the end of his presentation. Considering we had the likes of Galen Rowell and Freeman Patterson as keynotes over the years this was quite an achievement. His whole presentation was on the sandwiching of slides to produce the Orton effect, very inspiring in the days before Photoshop. I actually have a signed copy of Once Upon an Island. Chris Harris has some great inspirational books also of the Cariboo Chilcotin area of BC. Another great video as usual, thanks for the effort you put into these.

Hi Adam, wonderful video. It really surprised me when you held up your new book (Quite Light). Did you know that (John Sexton's) first book was entitled "Quite Light". As a matter-of-fact he was the one who coined the phrase and actually has dedicated most of his photographic career to it's nature, photographing in earnest the time before sunrise and after sunset. I remember him always stating "it was almost dark" when he took certain shots. Also, I remember photographing a small waterfall that was part of a wonderful photo he did up in (Happy Isles) Yosemite Valley and him, thinking I was duplicating it, came over saying "Copy Right infringement", in a joking manner, then saying "no" let me see what you got; Polaroid. Upon seeing I had a different vision, just a small fall in the upper Merced River, his beautiful almost dreamy renditond included the whole river and forrest around it, went "Oh".
Fabulous episode. I sat here with pad n pencil scribbling notes . The loss of a complete set of glass filters (they fell from my bag into a fast flowing gorge yesterday) will curtail my book buying for a while but I will be sure to keep some of these names/titles in mind in the future. I actually picked up a copy of Jospeh Holmes' Natural Light (complete with slipcase, signed and a print inside) after you mentioning him in a previous episode, many thanks for that. I too love looking through books and as you know I have your's on my bookshelf, it's a cracker. It sits alongside 2 other newly published works (well in the last 18 months) from Photographers Alex Nail *Northwest* * Colin Bell *Healing* if you get chance I think you would like both.. AN covers teh NW part of Scotland and is full of real grand vistas whilst's Colin's is a selection of landscape & more intimate woodland photography. Atb Alan

A very inspirational video this week sir. I did indeed look up a few that I hadn't heard of before. I of course living in the states used to hear about Ansel Adams and grew up with most of his ideas on images. I too was very stark in the darkroom. Whites being white and blacks being black. Thank you for enriching my views on others, will enjoy reading these throughout the winter...
Love this video! I also have many of these books (Burkett, Porter, Borges, Neil, Dykinga, etc.) Burkett's prints can be seen in the "Photography West Gallery" in Carmel, California and they are wondrous to behold. I was told in 2016 that his supply of paper was pretty much gone, but that came from the gallery owner who may well have been feeding me a line to force me to spend my money........I did not.
I 2meet Peter Dombrovskis early in 83 as a 23yr old visual arts student down from th mainland to document&protest against the daming. His inspiration is understandable after visiting Tasmania for th 1st time. Cheerz from AU on Fire..

I have a suggestion for you, Craig Potton. He's a New Zealand photographer, publisher and conservationist and I think his images from around New Zealand would give you some idea of the wide variety of landscapes we have in our small country. Might even tempt you down this way :D

Hi Adam, really enjoy all your vlogs. If you like Peter Dombrovskis you should check out Olegas Truchanas who was Peter's mentor. He was born in Lithuania and moved to Tassie after the war. He was a great photographer and campaigner against all the damming in Tassie. The two of them are legends in Australia, it is worth looking for a doco called "Wildness" released a few years back. Unfortunately Olegas died kayaking on, I think, the Franklin river. These two guys were migrants and they could see the beauty of Tassie which a lot of the locals couldn't see. It was like the Austrian Gustav Weindorfer who saw the beauty of Cradle Mountain in Tassie and bought up land there which eventually became the world renowned Cradle Mt National Park!

Happy New Year Adam! I bought Alex Nail's book "Northwest" last year in which he has photographed the Torridon and Assynt in the far north of Scotland. It's an absolute gem, beautifully bound and embodies a huge body of work and effort on Alex's part as that area deserves much respect due to its isolation especially in winter.

I just wanted to make a comment about Peter Dombrovskis and the book you mentioned. I am a photographer based in Tasmania, Australia, and Peter Dombrovskis is a huge inspiration to us here in Australia, not just in regards to photography, but also photography as a tool for conservation. Peter's photographs helped save the incredible wild Franklin River from damming in the early 1980's.
Regarding the book you displayed: as you pointed out it is a poorer print quality than you'd hope for a photographer is recognised in the International Hall of Fame. It is a very recent publication, mass produced and is very cheap - both in purchase cost and quality, which is a terrible shame. I can assure that the previous publications of his work are of very high quality. I urge you to seek out the book 'Simply' which is probably the next easiest one to get - although it won't be cheap. You will then get appreciation for his work in high quality. In general his books are highly sought after and prized possessions. The cheap new publication is a good reference of a large amount of his compositions, but not reflective of the quality of it. I think Peter would be mortified by the new book.
For your info, Joe Cornish in the UK is a huge fan of Peter's work.

Yes I love books too can look at them for hours . Joe Cornish and David ward books are my favourites . Alex Nail released a cracking book on Scotlands mountains a while ago.

This video popped up on my "suggested videos" list a little while ago (even though I saw it last year when you released it, 🙄) so I watched it again. I did some looking online and found Michael Orton's book "Once Upon an Island" on Ebay and bought it. Less than $5 with free shipping! Score! Thanks for the recommendations. I love good photography books. So now, along with needing more wall space, I'm going to need a new bookshelf. 😄

Funny, I haven’t heard of any of those artist except for Michael Orton. So much content on the internet it’s easy to forget books. But you’re right, the ability to flip through pages can not be replaced. QT Luong has excellent National Park books. Greg Vaughn has a few excellent regional guide books. Last, Ron Warfield has an excellent Mount Rainier book (amongst a few others).
Interesting video. Like you, I am a great fan of John Sexton. I have two of his books; “Quiet Light” and “Listen to the Trees”. I consider the latter to be the best photography book I have ever purchased, and believe that in that book Sexton surpassed his teacher and mentor, Ansel Adams. I have also collected Michael Kenna (several books), Michael Levin, both Westons, Paul Strand, Joe Cornish, and now, Adam Gibbs. They are all regularly picked up for inspiration.
Very exciting video Adam, there are really great book presentations, of which I will also choose something, thanks for that! Large format seems to have always been of great importance in landscape photography over the years, maybe you should rediscover this decelerated type of photography for yourself. Bit by bit back to the roots and leaving the digital snap behind ...

Prior to a recent illness he was shooting mostly large format landscapes of the Everglades. Almost exclusively black and white. His work is exquisite. Thanks again for your vlogs and Happy New Year!

So good! Thank you for this. I am struck by how vastly different this straight forward, magnificent work is from the deluge of images we see on social media. I am also struck by how complex are the skills of editing (as In choosing photos for a book; I don’t mean digital or chemical darkroom although yes, developing is complex) and sequencing. Social media deluges us with how to take photo videos, etc. But how to select and sequence..not so much. I wish there was more of that.

Man, this is timely. I was just lamenting about the uninspiring weather conditions this time of year in Oregon and I agree with you that a good book is a great way to get some inspiration. I’m familiar with a few of the photographers mentioned, most notably, William Neill and I see he’s chimed in on this weeks video already. Another great video Adam, very enjoyable. Interesting that most of the photographers you mention I also follow and have many of the same books. It could be that I too spent many years shooting LF . I might suggest Ken Duncan (Australia) who shoots mostly 6x17 and Tom Mackie (American who lives in the UK). I once had the privilege of visiting Christopher Burkett in his studio, he's darkroom is simply amazing, and yes, he had a large stock of Cibachrome (Ilfochrome) when I visited. You can follow Jack Dynkinga on Facebook, he's pretty active there; I think he's retired from shooting LF and the last I heard he was using the D850.
Adam, I really enjoyed this! Great knowing some of the photographers that inspire you, and several have been my favorites as well. I have enjoyed the copy I have of Eliot Porter's ( In Wildness Is the Preservation of the World) that some wonderful photographer friends found and gave me. The fact that Graham Osborne's book titled "Rainforest: Ancient Realm of the Pacific Northwest" features writing by Wade Davis is just so perfect! Rchard Evans Schultes (Davis' advisor at Harvard) and Wade Davis' book "One River" have been sources of inspiration that helped fuel my pursuit of Botany in school. I may have to pick this one up!

Before Christmas I received the book "Quiet Light". This book inspires me! Books that have accompanied me for years are: Peter Gasser, "Atlas Land der Berber" or "Verschwindende Landschaften", DuMont Verlag by various photographers. I wish you good health and - of course - good light in 2020.
As another book addict I really enjoyed this post. Dombrovkis is one of my favorite landscape photographers ever and I am glad to say i was able to find a copy of his book. I finally made it to Tasmania in Nov 2019 and it is a hidden gem. Couple more of your countrymen I really like are Tim Fitzharris and Darwin Wiggett…and who could forget Freeman Patterson.

After seeing this, I actually found a copy of Michaels book at a German reseller. Also I already have one of his books called "Photographing Creative Landscapes" which is as the title suggests more of an educational thing. ;-)
Wow, that's a lot of names Adam! I too like to hold a book and flick through it, way more than on screen. Only problems is space - I have just lost a lot of storage due to the loft being turned into a bedroom. More shelves please!
Would be nice to see a bit of Michael Kenna there, I love his book 'Huangshan'. John Blakemore and Fay Godwin also need a mention. Paul Kenny and 'Seaworks' and I love Colin Bell's book 'Healing'. I guess David Ward should have a mention too, for 'Landscape Within' and Landscape Beyond. Although not strictly Landscape, I personally get great satisfaction from Joseph Koudelka and have a copy of 'Gypsies'. I would love to get Joseph Soudek's work in print, particularly 'Sad Landscapes'. Hope this inspires a few folks.

I haven't read all the comments but can I just say that that is the worst possible book to own about Peter Dombrovskis and his work. It is good to get a rough (very rough!) idea of his work and as you say the print quality isn't great at all. In fact it is awful and doesn't not represent him well at all. Look out for "on the Mountain', 'Simply', 'In the Forest' as books to get a much better and more accurate portrayal of what he did. They are pricey though as all out of print now. Always great to see your videos and book reviews need more coverage on youtube I feel. Especially for photography. Loving your own book and hoping to get your accompanying print framed for the house soon.
What can I say? the book was a generous gift from a couple of fellow photographers and if I haven't received it I probably wouldn't have heard of Peter. Perhaps you would like to share some titles of Peters that do showcase his fine work in a better light?

Very good subject for a video and inspiring to watch. In thinking over my own collection, it occurs to me that my most loved books might give me a better understanding of the types of images I would like to take for myself. The books that I love have people in them with their environments, but the photos I take usually don't. Perhaps I need to look in some new directions. Thanks for your guidance.

If I had to choose only one photographer and one book it would be The Creation from austrian Ernst Haas. This guy isn't living anymore since over 30 years but his photography remains so much over the top and actual. For me he is the most painter of all photographers...
