Thank you, I really enjoyed this episode! My grandma is a genealogist and two of the most exciting and interesting ancestors in my family lineage is John of Gaunt and Katherine Swynford. I’m so grateful to have such detailed, thorough records of my family tree.

However it's certainly not common knowledge. If I walked into the heart of my city (Richmond, VA) and asked the first 500 people I saw, "who was John of Gaunt's father," I'd venture to say exactly none of them would know who he was and I'd have zero correct responses.

even though the entire doc is interesting in terms of john s life, it is at 40:50 when one finally hears the most significant elation ship john has to richard II and the crown of england, and the dynamics that were created when richard exiled henry bolingbroke. i have never quite heard it explained thoroughly that henry may have felt forced to take the crown, in order to get back his own lands... this is a very important point, if this is true, as to why, in a sense, he usurped the throne, which is rightfully belonging to the Mortimers, Edmund son of Roger Mortimer who some called heir presumptive as they are descended from Lionel, second son of Edward III , and since the first son, the black prince s line died out with
Richard II, seem to be rightful heirs. It is the first opportunity that i have heard of both john and henry s loyalty to crown being divided and conflicted.

Wonderful information! I think Ms. Carr should listen to some of her podcasts so that she will speak more clearly, distinctly; she often does this, but more often she drops her tone and runs words together. I am sure, as an American, this causes more difficulty for me! :)) Thanks so very much.

@@ChristineCarmichaelphysteacher Surely that has to do with our ears and what they take in on a daily basis. Absolutely. I can't remember the American now, but I can assure you that Americans drive me nuts with how they speak. I was a singer (real music, not other stuff!) and diction is a huge thing to me. Something happened in this country about 20 years ago; speaking is garbles and wide and pressed and rushed. Maybe I don't want to go back and listen to this! I do remember the problem with Ms. Carr. I was trying to help.

I spend so much down time and especially time trying to bring the runaway car crash of thoughts down to a level that allow for sleep watching documentaries or listening to podcasts like this with most of the documentaries at least made in Britain and spoken with one of the multiple British accents and I don’t know if it’s one reason I didn’t have the slightest bit of trouble understanding her whatsoever. Her accent, (not far from the “posh” English accent the other accent holders speak poorly of in Britain but in good taste of course lol) her volume, consistency, and tone from the beginning to 24:42 has been quite lovely and make me wonder if your not having some technical issues on your preferred device or something else other than what I’m hearing come thru so clearly. I can only say her microphone was terrible or later on in the signal maybe the EQ wasn’t set or the mixing device for the podcast whatever it was they could use a de-esser (you likely know already as a former musician but most won’t) that tones down the S sounds in your vocals. You would likely not hear these Sss sound if you were just listening to her speaking in person. It’s not that she has a speech impediment or anything it’s just something that cheap or damaged microphones can effect, using something like apple old style plug in earbuds, or any headphone/ microphone combo to pick up your voice instead of a proper microphone made for producing podcasts or sound reproduction of all kinds, or the frequencies set poorly in the audio signal between her microphone and the device that reproduced that signal into audible form. I’ve never had such trouble time describing something I actually know a little bit about and have my own experience with as I too am a semi retired musician (with hearing consequences from it. I have to crank up the volume to 11 to hear anything it seems and none of the bands were especially loud or heavy but alternative rock or similar music) and was the lead singer who ran the PA for the early part of my career in music only relived of that horrible task later on when we played larger venues most of the time and those usually come with a sound tech if they have house PA. The sound coming out of someone’s mouth can differ a lot depending on how good or bad the person who’s in control of the many devices and the device themselves in live reproduction. It’s all complicated and changing as technology advances. If your a musician then as the money increases so does the complications and pitfalls that can derail your sound if a piece of equipment isn’t set properly or even if the signal is being interfered on by the building’s electrically wiring amongst other unseen things of that nature.
      Cheers

Sorry my previous comment got so long to any who took the time to read it. I must add Im going to go insane if some of my fellow Americans continue to leave out the T in the middle of certain words. This isn’t the established way that might be heard in Brooklyn or other urban sounding accents. This is new and all across America it seems. Certain is a good example. They say cer-een with an emphasis on the N sound. Or walking they don’t like the ing in it so Wah-en so less to No K and big on that N again unlike if they said again when they leave it as it should be. Even Water being more like Waher. Or back they say baa like a goat. Those are exaggerations but the idea. It’s not just kids that I’ll admit I once was one of that even like really like talked like we liked like a lot back in high school circa 2001 but still has that “valley girl” thing somehow. Now it’s the adults who are speaking in this way and the younger generations. They won’t be forgoueen in the history of the many different accents and minor accents of the English language in America. Hopefully it doesn’t cross the pond to annoy our dearest cousins.

very significant figure, this guy his direct descendants within several generations are huge figures in english history, henry vii, henry viii, elizabeth i, edward iv and richard iii of York were also descended from john of gaunt s granddaughter cicely neville who was their mother and was grandmother to edward v ... many significant members of both house of york and lancaster are descended from him, including elizabeth of york, wife of henry vii, and who had a stronger claim to throne than her husband and legitimized his career as king of england ...elizabeth of york was also granddaughter of cicely ... therefore henry viii, son of both henry vii, and elizabeth of york was actually descended directly from john of gaunt on both sides ..you might state what branch your spouse is. descended from as John of gaunt had a lot of children who also were very prolific
and that would. be quite interesting , are you married to Lancaster or Beaufort ( theTudor dynasty is connected to the Beaufort side ) or to York side of John s descendants ?

I'm less bothered about reading that because it's published by Amberley and Warner has released about ten books in the last two years, so not much research went into them.
The Amazon reviews are littered by people who just want to tell random strangers that they have an ancestral connection to Gaunt.
