Regarding ChatGPT, the thing that concerns me most isn’t really a Skynet-type scenario where we become slaves to some machine overlord. Instead, it’s just an amplification of the old human struggle over who has access to information and the power that comes with that. I think it’s obvious at this point that our over-reliance on proprietary media (which I would categorize ChatGPT as) is going to lead to greater inequality. The tremendous amount of information that is being fed into “Open” AI’s models will inevitably become selectively accessible depending how valuable or detrimental it’s deemed to be by those who have the means to commodify it. It doesn’t help that, like with other modes of media, a lay person often isn’t even able to assess whether the information being output is accurate or not.
Thank you so much for everything you do, this podcast truly does touch hearts and minds. I was lucky enough to be in London for Xmas and I saw the Medieval Women exhibit all because of this podcast! It was absolutely wonderful, truly moving. I do hope this podcast doesn't start using AI images. They really cheapen everything they touch and they're never historically accurate so they are not useful as teaching aides. It would make me very sad to have them inturrupting the fascinating conversations that take place here. A still title card is more than enough. We're here for the conversatioms!
Btw, Happy New Year and hopefully you’ll both have a great 2025!
Thank you.
