There was also Tente, a plastic toy line from Spain around the 70s iirc. It has the same dimension as Lego bricks except the studs are wider, therefore incompatible with Lego. Each studs of Tente blocks has a tiny hole so you can fit a peg in it.
nice video. this is actually different to a documentary i watched a while ago, which portrayed Lego as the first of its kind, and Mega Bloks and others were taking advantage of their patent expiring.
Very good video. Building sets of course go all the way back to basic wooden blocks for children pre 1900. Some block companies began to print elaborate designs on their bricks to build Tudor houses and even cathedrals. There was even one company that made clay bricks with a mortar for a more realistic experience. The mortar could be dissolved in water to be reused. The non-brick building sets are fascinating as well, especially the ones using dangerous looking metal prongs.
Japan has 'diablock' which was launched in 1962. Today it features rounded corners for more safety. I used to have them when I was little, but Lego completely took over when I moved to London.
@silvervine16 Never knew Nintendo made similar toys. A quick search came up with N&B Block or Nintendo Block which was discontinued in 1972 - before I was born. However, Diablock is still in production after 60 years.
There is one Lego set you forgot to mention, Mixels. That's got to be the best part, not only that. It hasn't been respected well, and it just needs some love.
There’s one more small Lego competitor that was short lived. TYCO. I still have some of them to this day and the ones i have are a 2/3 size compared to a normal Lego brick.
TYCO did released bricks size that are compatible with Lego. But their plates are thicker than Lego's (2 TYCO plates is the same height of a regular brick as opposed to 3 Lego plates)
I remember when LEGO had to deal with competition from Super Blocks, which was a LEGO clone manufactured by Tyco Toys from 1984 until sometime in the 1990s. Tyco Toys would be purchased by Mattel in 1997.
What’s funny is that when Lego’s basic design patents expired, no one figured out how to make bricks as durable as LEGOs. I built a couple of the new LEGO collector cars and when I gave the Mega Construx Hot Wheels Bone Shaker a try, I couldn’t help but wonder why the bricks weren’t staying put as easily.
So you're telling me there was a brick company in the US called ELGO and LEGO wasn't stealing that name and it was pure chance?.. I'm pressing X to doubt.
Well, Lepin was a very clear copycat, but even the more legit brands from China still copy a lot of the part designs. If you have western competitors like Mega or Polish Cobi, those have their own brand on every piece and try to use different designs when ever possible. Last year, Sobi made a model of some Opel racecar. They refused to use the correct yellow shade, just because that would make their parts (!) look like Lego knockoffs and instead kept with their own colors and a much darker yellow.
@@kailahmann1823 Lego does not care if other companies copy their parts but if they straight up copy the sets then it is a problem cuz other companies make there own set designs that lego didn't do but lepin just copys legos sets which is not cool.

I dont know if you spotted this: the wolverine mech set has completly different parts for the crotch than the art in the box. The Thor mech and Thanos mech have that annoying 3 ball joint cylinder in the crotch that for me it was a poor choice, and I thought the Wolverine mech was fixed in that part because the art in the box shows other pieces for the same area, but the actual set is not only made with other pieces but also asymmetrical in that spot which in my opinion it's even worst!! Sorry for my English, greetings from Ecuador
Aah MegaBlocks. The n° 1 choice for the uncles/aunts that knows the nephew is a Lego fan but don't want to spend Lego money.
I'm in my 30's and this happened to me as a kid as well. "I bet my nephew would love these discount lego immitation bricks!"
The Dragons and Pirates from 2002-2006 were awesome though
At least they are harder to be lost

While it could have been from a partnership, K'nex also has bricks which fit perfectly with Lego.
Why does the Lego community hate knock off if Lego was not the first
