  • This week i head to my local river to practice my photography and get to grips with my new Geared Heads from Sunwayfoto. I have only started using Geared Heads this year but they have definitely changed the way i approach a scene. I find that using these tripod heads helps me to slow down and try to work on a composition rather than fighting with a ballhead.

    I'm watching this on a 95°F (35°C) day in NYC and all I can think of is: where is there a nice creek that I can just wade into, using photography as a pretext?

    Picked up the same geared head a few weeks ago and love it. I used to use a Cambo geared head back in the 80's when I was shooting large format. The new head makes me slow down my shooting and I find I enjoy it a lot more.

    Hi Paul - I've been using this Sunway geared head for about 6 months and absolutely love it! I totally agree with you about slowing down and the fine adjustments that can be easily made while using it. Keep up the great videos and enjoy the fresh, summertime water. Cheers.

    I shoot real estate for a living and I use a geared head. I started with a ball head and every complaint you make against a ball head are why I switched. If I was shooting news or sports, then I'd probably go back to a ball head. In real estate and landscapes there is no urgency. A room is not likely to move. Neither is a mountain. My photos are level and that is a blessing on its own.

    I’ve used geared heads for years, the ease of making fine adjustments makes a massive difference. Initially I used the manfrotto but it is heavy, used a benro one for past few years

    Standing in a cool stream taking pictures, great way to spend a hot summer day.
    Great shots. I have been watching your videos for awhile and I really like the images in the last few videos. Nice work. A bit more simplified compositions with a clear direction for the viewer. Something we all need to keep working on.
    Personally, I love using a geared tripod head. I started with the Sunwayfoto head. It's a great head and is nice way to try using a geared head to see if you like it. You are absolutely correct, it forces you to slow down and really work on getting the composition just the way you want it.

    Paul, I hadn't watched your videos prior to this evening. One popped up similar to others you've filmed recently with Adam Gibbs and I ended up watching a couple of those as well as this one. I have to say, you have one of the best teaching channels out there. I really appreciate how you take the time to provide tips, show us how you are composing and why. As for the geared head, I made the jump earlier this fall and as you said, it slowed me down and I'm really getting the compositions much more fine tuned. One comment I would make, I purchased the GH-PRO II+ 3-Way Geared Tripod Head Include Arca Swiss Plate DP-60G. It has the geared panning head on top and I'm finding that is actually used at least equally with the other two gears. I'd highly recommend it. Yes, I have subscribed as well. Thanks for sharing the information and experience.

    Paul Thomson !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    That FLM sure handled that flowing water without any trouble! How You liking that Fuge?
    SunWayFoto has made some strides of late, and are putting out great gear. I recently picked up one of their Gimbal heads, and it is solid piece of kit.
    I have been considering g a geared head, but generally have good luck with the ball heads I have. I find if one dials in the tension correctly, on a good ball head, they wont flop around like some would say they do. The Two main Pros to a geared head would be the ability to make really subtle changes to the camera position, and secondly, not having to hold onto the camera when making said adjustments.
    Stay safe in that rushing water, and Happy Shooting! Cheers 👍

    Got this geared had. But was faulty. So had to send it back. Ended up going with the benro geared head. Had more handy function with it. But will never go back to ball head. Geared heads are just do more precise.

    Lovely images Paul, got the same head this Christmas and its the best purchase I have made for my photography. Conversely I found it has saved me time, I seemed to spend ages trying to get the ball head perfectly level, fighting it drooping slightly when you lock it in and generally faffing around with it. With the geared head you get it somewhere close and you can adjust those precision movements in seconds, LOVE IT! As a side note, any chance of taking down the highlights on those legs in post LOL 🙂

      Wonder if someone came up with a ball head for quicker composition set up, but also outfitted it with precision tuning gears in light aluminium. Gotta be.

  • @paulkirk5760
    @paulkirk5760 2 роки тому +1

    Great images and couldn’t agree more in terms of geared head. Trying to make a fine adjustment on a ball head often results in having to start again so is distracting. I went to the sunway head via ifootage fluid head but found that too heavy and bulking especially as I used it with a levelling base. The sunway is quite intuitive so that also gives you more time to focus on the composition and settings. All in all a great video.

    Mate... there really is a debate re being fast and chasing the light e.g. hand held vs. slowing down like you are currently enjoying. One of your best images was that one with the rainbow.... I'm guessing you would have never captured that if you had to faff around with all that gear?
    Don't get me wrong I utilize both methods but at this point i definitely don't want to be slowing down. To me, the light is far too fleeting for such philosophies.

    • @PaulthomsonphotographyUk
      @PaulthomsonphotographyUk  2 роки тому

      Well there are two ways to shoot for me one is considered photography in which I slow down and work on a composition and the other is reactive photography in which I just grab a shot as fast as I can to make sure I get the shot. Both have their merits and are useful in different situations. 😊✌️

    • @elusivelens1744
