    A clear and sensible review that's going to influence my decision to buy the Karma Grip, thank you. When I'm out having fun on my MTB I'm not worried about capturing the sound, it's the video I'm interested in. I have been considering the Removu S1 but the Karma gets my vote. Thanks again dude.

      Thanks a lot man. Glad this video was helpful to you. I think as long as your not worried about the audio quality then this is a great gimbal. It is the only one I have ever owned and I love it. It does exactly what I need it to do. Let me know if you get one and how you like it.

      Yeah it is unfortunate that it is impossible to use an external mic and the karma grip simultaneously. If it was possible I would buy the karma grip in a heartbeat.

    I use it with the Hero4Black and while I lose the LCD for framing the shoot, the audio with the Hero4 it's substantially better than with the Hero5. To frame shoots you can use the smart phone app or the Removu remote viewing LCD device.

      Yeah I have actually seen people attaching their phone to the Karma Grip and using it as a monitor. Pretty cool stuff.

    I really want to buy the grip, I am no a vlogger so the sound quality isn't going to be an issue for me. I've watched a few vids on vloggers wanting to use it for vlogging and the reality is that the grip is not vlogging tool. If you can make it work for your specific needs, GREAT! nice video BTW...

    • @ScottyGoesPro
      @ScottyGoesPro  7 років тому +1

      Will Mojica yeah I agree and I don't think it was ever intended to be a vlogging tool. If the audio is not an issue for you then I recommend it. It has been great for me but I have seen where other people have had other issues. But no piece of technology is perfect so it just depends on what you can give and take. I love this gimbal so far!

    Use the quick capture feature to conserve battery life, it work though the grip just like using the camera by itself. Just press record and it powers on and records, press record again and it stops recording and powers down rather than keeping the grip on and draining the battery and using a cord and extra battery pack

    My question is, in 2021 is the karma grip still relevant. I have the GoPro 7,8,9 & Max. Stabilisation is really good now on max & the 9 black, max lens mod does add some good functionality. I’ve only had my karma grip for a year & haven’t really decided if I’ll use it when I go snowboarding this winter. Just wondered what your thoughts were?

    thanks the vid, after watching this, I ended up buying a a go pro 6 and karma grip. Super impressed with the product. I wish there was a way I can mount my iPhone X and a Rode micro mic to the grip handle. Any suggestions?

    Turn camera to stereo only manual setting before putting it in the harness. Make sure your camera is firmly seated all the way in the harness so the gasket covers the charge port. In protune render the audio on medium setting. Reduce bass to -10db in post production. Audio issues resolved.

      @ScottyGoesPro  7 років тому

      MTNcorps thanks. I'll give that a try. I know it's an action cam so the audio in this grip isn't an issue for me. I'm not using it for audio but I do like to get the best I can get out of it. Thanks again.

      Алексей Дорошенко I don't know. I haven't tried it. I do know that when the Hero 5 goes into the grip the manual audio settings are grayed out. I can't select stereo mode or wind mode. It doesn't matter if I select it before or after putting it in the grip.

  • @rskvdm

    Thanks for the review! I wonder what if you stub somehow (with a tape, or with a piece of wooden match) the audio mic that is right near the little door.. it seems like if the problem exactly in that mic and you have two more mics opened (after drilling holes) - maybe sound will come better from two but not three mics? If you have time for that experiment I will appreciate - the sound issue is quite important for me. After watching your review I really started thinking of buying EVO GP-PRO or similar.. but you know, those buttons on Karma Grip are so handy!!))

    • @ScottyGoesPro
      @ScottyGoesPro  7 років тому

      Dmitry Rusakov when I first got my Karma Grip I had planned to drill the holes larger. Not sure if you saw my other video where I drilled holes in the skeleton housing of my Hero 5? It made a big difference in my opinion. The reason it made a difference is because two of the three holes in the skeleton housing did not line up with the mics from the Hero 5. However, with the Karma Grip all the holes line up perfectly with the Hero 5. So I just don't think that drilling them larger will make any difference. The real problem happens when you take the door off the Hero 5. It doesn't matter if your holding the Hero 5 in your hand, if it's in a case, or in the Karma Grip. Once that door opens or comes off the audio goes south. I just don't see there being a fix.

    • @rskvdm
      @rskvdm 7 років тому

      Yes I saw your another video where you made holes in GoPro holder (actually my holder already has those apertures fixed - so they are not completely covered with plastic). I wondered if the problem with bad sound when you have your camera and gimbal connected could be fixed just using only two microphones but not all three (by isolating one that is near usb door somehow).
      Me neigher think that drilling holes larger could help)

    • @ScottyGoesPro
      @ScottyGoesPro  7 років тому

      I guess I could try putting a piece of tape over the third mic to see if that helps. I know the audio is important to you and it usually is to me too. I'll try it out this weekend when I get some time and let you know. I know you were looking into the EVO as well. Have you looked into the Removu S1? That was going to be my next choice if I did not like the Karma Grip.

    • @ScottyGoesPro
      @ScottyGoesPro  7 років тому

      Ok, I actually just tried it with a piece of duct tape over that mic closest to the door (we can call that the third mic) and it did NOT make any difference unfortunately. I tried it with the Hero 5 by itself as well as in the Karma Grip. I can not tell any difference between the tape being on and the tape being off.

    • @rskvdm
      @rskvdm 7 років тому

      ScottyGoesPro, it's sad that the noise is still there, but anyway thanks a lot for experimenting! I'll definitely look at Remove S1! Thanks for an advice!

      Eddie Runcorn that's actually a good question. I don't have a remote but I can try it with the capture app on my phone. If that works then I'm sure the remote will too. I'll let you know once I try it.

      Im looking to get the remote also, I tried out the capture app after reading this and I'm glad I did. The app will not power on the karma grip. The grip needs to be turned on, this will also turn on the camera. Once everything is on, I turn on the wireless on the camera, I can then connect with the capture app and rec and stop rec. If you hit the power button on the capture app it turns off only the camera. The grip stays on.
      When you turn off the camera and try to turn it back on, the wifi connection is reset and you need to reconnect wifi on the phone. I tried this with the camera out of the grip and it powers on and off correctly and does not reset the wifi connection. This looks like a bug in the software and I will send a note to Gopro on this.
      If you get the remote it would be good to hear how that works.

    Scotty I'm new to the Karma grip and Gopro for that matter..
    how do you get the Karma into a "Selfie" mode or position and know you're still in frame without being able to see the LCD?

    • @ScottyGoesPro
      @ScottyGoesPro  6 років тому

      So there is no "selfie" mode with the Karma Grip. You just have to turn it around so that the camera is facing you and the buttons on the grip are facing away from you. As far as framing yourself if you have the GoPro in wide mode you can almost be guaranteed that you will be in the frame. Just point it at yourself and you should be fine.

    What you didn't show was the difference in sound quality with the door on and door off the hero 5.
    I am picking up this camera today to find out for myself.
    As you say the sound was never designed to be perfect... I think all we expect is the sound to be the same in the grip as out of it or the ability to plug a mic into the grip.
    I really want the whole Gopro Karma kit with camera and grip and I want this to work.
    I'd appreciate the details of that mic you were wearing, were u blue toothing with the camera? How did that work so well?
    Thanks

      Yes even a few sensors would make the drone better. I'm back from the store and have the grip and camera charging.
      The drone and controller can wait.
      The salesman tells me Gopro make a mic that connects with the hero 5 via bluetooth.
      Whether this is correct is one thing and whether it works in the grip is another thing as well.

    SOLUTION FOR POOR AUDIO ON KARMA GIMBAL
    I found a solution that actually works real time. The Hero 6 (and others) use the data from all 3 mics and processes it into an ok audio track (for an action cam). The horrific audio issue with the Karma Grip occurs when the port access door is removed in order to insert it into the Karma Grip. By doing so, the dynamics recorded by the mic adjacent to the port door is altered and the processor does not know what to do with it. The result is a muffled underwater sound that in my opinion is unacceptable. The solution is to simply eliminate the mic next to the port. Simply apply some small strips of electrical tape over the mic prior to inserting it into the Karma. By eliminating that mic, the processor is able to interpret the remaining 2 mics into markedly better (acceptable) audio. The kicker is this would be a simple fix by GoPro via a software update allowing to turn individual mics on and off. Maybe add a Karma Grip mode that disables this particular mic.
    Try it out an let me know what you think.

      Merih Akyol are you talking about the battery for the Hero itself? I always have a battery in my Hero when in the karma grip. I had a battery in it during this video. I think someone said that if you turn on the GoPro before putting it into the grip then it should work. I haven't had the chance to try it out yet.

      scotty morris you might know that Karma is always charging the GoPro, when you have the GoPro battery inside the GoPro when attached to KarmaGrip.
      The correct way therefore is to use GoPro without its battery, which gives you longer Karma battery life.
      But this way most of GoPro settings like audio options or auto-low light will be greyed-out not available.
      Only way to use all setting of GoPro is to use it with its battery on.
      Choice is yours. I started using it without GoPro batteries, when I use it attached on KarmaGrip.

      scotty morris besides never turn on GoPro and then attach it to grip, because this way it does not USB-connect with the grip. Always healthier to turn on GoPro from the grip for correct usb connection.

      That makes sense with saving karma battery life without a battery in the GoPro. I did not know that you could use the GoPro in the grip without a battery in it. I have always used the grip with a battery in the Hero. The manual audio option tab is always grayed out making it to where I can't select it. And that of course is with a battery in the Hero. Should I turn on the Hero first before turning on the grip? Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Either way I don't really care to capture audio while using the grip. It would be nice of course but it's not a deal breaker. I love this grip.

      Always turn on and of the hero from the grip, never on the hero to ensure correct usb-connection to grip.
      Try using Hero without battery, again as grip is directly feeding Hero.
      You will only notice that auto low-light (which I use) will not be functional.

      +Marlo De Ocampo very cool man. I have been very happy with both. Not sure if you have seen it or not but I just posted a video on how to mount the two together so you can get some cool over-the-head type shots. Check it out when you get a chance.

      +Marlo De Ocampo I felt the exact same way when buying mine. Seems like all I was seeing on UA-cam at the time was negative reviews. As long as the audio isn't a deal breaker you will be fine. Just make sure to update the software and calibrate it. Let me know how you like it when you get it.

    The harness is badly designed and covers up both microphones on the hero5 black - the best solution I've seen involved an electric drill and a 3.5mm drill bit :)

    I wouldn't buy it due to its poor battery life.
    If they had any sense they would have made the battery interchangeable.

      THURROCK VARMINTING even though you can plug it into a portable battery pack? Tons of battery juice there.
