      @@eoinbarrett3579 Did I not already explain why your suggestion was not smart? It resolves nothing to leave a problem instead of to help resolve it. In this case, such a resolution would be via education. If a wise man leaves because of the embarrassing lack of educated people, that only increases the ratio of ignorant : educated, within the country that I assume they love.
      Of course, the other part of this is that given that this is the internet, what would leaving the country do there? Maybe they already had and you're not only giving them bad advise in terms of resolution but also completely stupid and pointless advice.
      As for whatever Dawkins did or didn't say, I think it's up to any family as to what decisions they are going to make. If you want to impose your own beliefs over somebody as if they were some kind of moral authority, then maybe you should take your own advice and move to Afghanistan, where abortion is illegal?

    When Dawkins was asked whether he feared death his attitude paralleled mine perfectly, it reminded me of the line in the excellent but quite disturbing movie " The Stoning of Soraya M. ". When Soraya was waiting for the barbaric execution to take place one of the women with her asked her if she was afraid of dying. She replied, I paraphrase but I believe I remember it correctly " it's not death I fear, it's the dying ". I found that to be a rather profound statement. I recommend the film if one happens across it, it's a true story that's definitely gut wrenching but well worth watching.

    Please remember this interview is from the Irish broadcaster RTE, who still broadcasts the Roman Catholic one minute Angelus prayer at 6.00pm every night on their main channel RTE1 and at midday and 6.00pm every day on their flagship radio station RTE Radio 1. RTE is also the broadcaster who continues to suck up to religions with weekly church services broadcast live each Sunday, something which the BBC and ITV have dropped over here in the UK since the early 1990s. They also kiss ass with the Catholic church every Easter by broadcasting their Good Friday and Holy Saturday ceremonies live from churches across Ireland. So you can see why RTE might be a bit bias with regard to this interview.

      John King not true there’s a Angeles on Friday for everyone

    • @hibernopithecus7500
      @hibernopithecus7500 2 роки тому

      Well as the state broadcaster, they are funded by license fees. That means they should cater to all demos. The Angelus takes 1 minute a day and the church service about 40, a church service which is broadcast specifically for the old & infirmed who can’t make it to their parish church for their weekly service and not, as you put it, “to suck up”.
      Would I watch any of it? Wild horses couldn’t drag me in front of a TV or radio when they’re on. But I don’t resent the fact they’re there. There’s still a sizeable, albeit very much aging percentage of that population that are practising Catholic and I don’t see it as a problem that they’ve paid the license fees for a large portion of their lives and get a whole 50 minutes a week dedicated to their religion from the state broadcaster.

He is a Dostoyevsky expert and was dissatisfied with all the translations of the work so he just went and learnt Russian. I think Ireland was in the middle of a major shift when this interview took place. There has been significant change in people's mindset and how they think of the Catholic church if not God. I for one don't feel as isolated as I would've back then. Atheist isn't the dirty word it once was. Though you will always find the odd person who takes it personally. I'd love to see him back on the show again for an audience Q&A like he did when Pat Kenny was doing the show. It'd be interest to see if the crowd treated him differently.

And being that you are the second person to comment on it I will correct myself by explaining that I didn't mean to say Ireland is part of the UK, although I understand how it came across that way, what I meant to say was "Ireland, (and the UK)". I'll blame my copy editor for not catching that before posting the comment.

  • @PirateFish1
    @PirateFish1  12 років тому +1

    @urcritic Actually very little was cut from this video, only a few seconds of non-verbal exchange moment. The audience was that stone quiet through the whole interview.
    That could be for two possible reasons. First, Ireland (the UK) is a largely Catholic nation, and Catholics tend to be somewhat more open to intelligent, religious debate than the Christian fundamentalists you find in the US, and the second reason being that sometimes silence itself can speak volumes.

  • @PirateFish1
    @PirateFish1  12 років тому

    Of course I can't argue with the essence of what you're saying. I spent 20+yrs in a family that included 3 Nun-in-laws and a Priest-in-law. My comment was based more on my experience that when debating theology with a Catholic they at least tend to offer a more intellectual argument than just 'the bible say so'. And they also don't generally tend to preach at, condemn and judge others in the fanatical way that Christians do.

  • @YourCritic
    @YourCritic 12 років тому

    That was great. I know it was cut a lot, but we didn't see or hear much of a negative audience reaction, like gasps, booing or heckling when Richard called them deluded. I suspect if it had been in the US they would have been rather hostile. Even the catholic priest took Dawkins' response quite well.

  • @brendyantho

    being Irish i'd like to offer my opinion - many people see being catholic as a default position - many don't go to church except weddings/funerals. Its something we're born into - its not really questioned. There's alot of apathy towards religion - if religion doesn't matter to someone i think the view is that it would be better to be seen as catholic rather than of no religion.
    I think that is changing though - and i think the younger generations -

    Im not religious myself and i think that death is only the beginning, but that in itself is only a belief system or reality tunnel, but i don't completely agree with Richard, for me the most plausible of religions would have to be Buddhism it makes so much sense,when it comes down to it, its Love and happiness where after, and if we just sit down for an hour or two a day and contemplate and think about our lives we already have what we need not always what we want and for me its friends and family, contentment, health, and listening to good music, and as the great Billy Connelly puts it ,all some people need is a good shag. haha so cheer up.

      Martial Harpist Matthew Well, actually yes he is. Whether God exists or not, millions of people throughout history and more intelligent than you (which ain’t hard, is it?) have had some kind of faith, yet Richard Dawkins is pushing 80. He’s already had a stroke and sounds a bit like Darth Vader now (how do I know? We live in the same town, which I’m guessing is thousands of miles from your little mud hut) As he keeps telling the world, nobody is immortal and within the next 20 years he will be waking up for the last time. Is he going to be as highly respected as Einstein, Jenner, Edison or Darwin in 10, 20, or even a hundred years? I sincerely doubt it.
      So, little gangster wannabe. Why don’t you go back to feasting on your M&M’s, go through puberty and then maybe come back and try to make an intelligent contribution. Ok Buckwheat?

    God Ryan is a tool, he seems shocked to hear what Dawkins has to say. Like how would you expect anything else from him? I think Dawkins point is totally proven with a host like Ryan Tubridy.

    Well, I always knew Ryan was a bellend before watching this interview but now i really cant take his shit at all. He represents a huge part of Irish T.V and cant come up with a single thought provoking question, I'm sure it's because he doesn't want to make it look like he's taking Richards side because the vast majority of the audience believe in Christianity. Talk about playing to the audience.

    its a 15minute slot with prob an 80% catholic audience (in studio) and generally older viewers - many of whom know very little of richard dawkins. I think Ryan is trying to get through the basics - but to the detriment of Dawkins - its wasted air time.
    I think the priest who spoke was great in that he wasn't just shouting and roaring and was prepared to actually engage in a conversation. I wish Ireland got to hear Dawkins speak for an hour and really explain his angle - might open some minds!

  • @tedgrant2

    God, of course, is very clever. He fully understands the difficulties of being a human.
    He knows how easy it is to make a mistake, especially given the vast number of choices.
    He certainly knows that picking the right religion is very difficult.
    So he's not at all bothered if you chose Christianity by mistake.

    That priest was extremely intelligent, for a priest, especially an Irish priest.And although he does believe in God you have to give it to him for seeing the truth in Natural Selection and what not. In a perfect world that would be expected but sadly this world is a major fuck up if I could say so.
