    Did any of these values/costs surprise you? If so, which ones? *Sorry for the typo on the Piccolo card PSA price. I didn't see it until post production*

    Vintage football was what got me back into the hobby several years ago. The idea that they are less common and less expensive than baseball has never made sense. The first graded cards I ever owned are a ‘72 Willie Lanier rookie in a 6, and ‘77 Harry Carson rookie in a 5.

    Vintage football cards! Bingo! I focus on these because the majority of modern collectors seem to ignore the value in these. I just picked up a 1970 PSA 7 Bart Starr for $62 all in. I remember Theismann from Notre Dame fame & his 3 years playing for my CFL Toronto Argonauts

    I collected the late 60’s and early 70’s as a youth. Getting back into the hobby in the past year, I graded a lot of those cards. It was surprising to see the disparity in prices from baseball to football. And you could do the same analysis on basketball. Fortunately I kept those cards in great condition including Bradshaw, Staubach, Butkus, Greene and others. I kept several but sold others to fund more vintage baseball. Quarterbacks always seem to capture a premium.

    • @MidLifeCards
      @MidLifeCards  Рік тому

      Totally agree on all of that. Basketball is also undervalued in my opinion...not really sure why. Quarterbacks do seem to be the most valuable...with Running Backs being #2. At least 2 defensive players were able to make the top 10 in values on this list. Those guys were warriors.

    I am a big fan of vintage football cards and agree that it is undervalued. I own about 4-5 of these from when I was a kid. Think they will grade in the 4-5 range and I bought them for a dime back in the day. The card you shared that is #1 on my list is the Staubach RC, think I will be targeting that one at the national this year. One card that Inalso think is cool is the Deacon Jones RC which is just outside of your year range. Good stuff!

    • @MidLifeCards
      @MidLifeCards  Рік тому

      That Staubach is a really tough card to get in high grades. Some of the pink from the card would bleed into the borders, and centering is brutal. Makes high grades hard to find.

      Almost all vintage youtube channels only talk about baseball cards. VERY few go into vintage football or basketball. Modern cards are all about football cards. Seems odd to me.

    The Dorsett price surprised me. Figured his rookie would go for more. The Walter Payton has gone up quite a bit. I was looking at an 8 back in 2000 and it was a few hundred dollars. Namath is overvalued for sure. Great video as usual Graig!

    • @MidLifeCards
      @MidLifeCards  Рік тому

      Appreciate it. Agreed on Dorsett. I think the Namath is overvalued because of the short print runs of the 65 topps football. It's almost a grail card for a lot of people...but I'm ok ignoring that one, and focusing on some of the other steals out there.

    • @ACD1994
      @ACD1994 Рік тому

      To me, Terry Bradshaw having 4 rings is, a great example of winning championships being, a TEAM sport. QB's always get the credit or blame, but over look a lot of different pieces, around Those Steelers 70's teams were loaded with hall of famers. WR hall of famer. Running back hall of famer. Plenty of all time greats on those defenses, too. Statistically, Bradshaw's numbers are not very impressive. He's no where close to Peyton Manning, Brady, Montana, Rodgers, etc. I would take Dan Marino too even though he never won a ring, the Dolphins talent around Marino wasn't really quite great enough to win Super Bowls. TB did play well in the postseason, though. I'll give him some credit there. He was his generations' Troy Aikman/a better version of Eli Manning.

    • @leapheap6837

      @@ACD1994 I would agree. Bradshaw wasn’t a great regular season quarterback. But he played great when it counted in the clutch. The Steelers are one of those franchises that’s global and has a lot of mystique to them. I think that card would be a good investment.

    Most Football fans just don’t care about the history of the game. They are a different breed than Baseball fans.
    I guarantee if you asked any football fan under the age of 35, they would not know how great Staubach was, or Earl Campbell was, or Fouts, etc.
    There is something about 1980 that many younger sports fans look at as when modern sports evolved. A lot of hockey fans think the game changed with Gretzky. A lot of basketball fans think the game changed with Bird/Magic. A lot of football fans think the game changed with Marino, Montana and Elway. They honestly feel it was an inferior game before 1980 in those sports because the players weren’t as big and fast.
    That’s why I feel the pre 1980 cards from Football won’t jump as much as they deserve. I just think the younger generation don’t look at Bradshaw and Staubach the way they do at Brady, Manning, Montana.

      I agree with this. Vintage baseball, is far and ahead of every other sport, though in fairness baseball does have an older on average fan base, which is why they're making some changes, like, putting bigger bases, and the pitch clock with, the goal of a quicker pace, to attract, a younger audience.

    After organizing and stashing away my thousands of baseball/football 75', 76' & 77' cards way back in 1991 (over 30 years ago) and NOW just reemerging from hibernation in my garage last month (some very big life changes had me a bit distracted-btw, what's this internet thingy and grading-who grades cards?) I'm still at a loss for words why NFL cards are STILL not that popular. Please name all the baseball stars who have cameos in movies, commercials (TASTES great! LESS filling!) or even had long running hit TV show series-NFL vet's as pop culture figures have that beat by a large margin. As a fellow CP Mustang (LA 90') who grew up in Alameda, CA our neighbor's and high school coaches were active/former Oakland Raiders from The 70's. I still delight in looking through my NFL cards having flashbacks to my childhood, some cards even autographed. I was a lucky kid indeed. Thanks for all the great info in helping me get to speed on the hobby-the do's and don'ts. Last week, I just sent in my first attempt at grading (20). I'm still a bit unsure about how to proceed with the lot-my 11 year old thinks I'm nutz.

    The Walter Payton, the price of that card has gone up, but there's still may be some more room to grow, in the coming years. He's in the discussion with, Jim Brown, and Barry Sanders for, greatest running back. Gale Sayers is a sad story. His career was ended way too, soon.

    Another interesting video. I have been collecting al 4 major sports for many years now and football is no exception, especially since I played it in my younger years.
    The Dorsett and Walter Payton cards were the only ones I thought were undervalued. Payton is arguably the greatest all round rb imo, running, catching, blocking and even tossing the occasional td pass.
    Namath by far is the most overpriced. I believe if my memory serves me correctly, that he threw more ints than he did tds. Broadway Joe apparently carries the same “mystique” that Mickey Mantle has.

    • @MidLifeCards
      @MidLifeCards  Рік тому

      Namath is way overpriced for sure. I think a lot of it may have to do with the short production supply of the 65 Topps set, but even then...it seems CRAZY high to me.

    • @chrisolivo6591
      @chrisolivo6591 Рік тому

      You are correct that Namath’s stats make him one of the most overrated QB’s in the Hall of Fame. But Namath’s impact with his win in Superbowl 3 propelled the modern NFL to where it is today.
      You have to remember the AFL was looked at as an inferior league when they started the SuperBowl in the mid 60’s. The first SuperBowl wasn’t even sold out. Namath not only beat the NFL Colts, but he even guaranteed the win before the game. That win legitimized the SuperBowl and the NFL-AFL merger and was a big step to Football eventually overtaking Baseball as America’s National Pastime.

    • @jamespinette9403
      @jamespinette9403 Рік тому +1

      @@chrisolivo6591 Yes, that is correct, however even though that was an historical moment in nfl history, imo it shouldn’t have elevated his rc value to galactic proportions like it has. A good comparison against that logic would be Aaron overtaking Ruth for the HR title, a very historical moment in baseball history. Aaron’s RC value is strong, but there are other players who have higher valued RCs. As I noted , similar to Mantle, he has that “mystique” factor, young engaging, flashy but likable personality.
      Football just recently overtook baseball’s popularity, (last 10 years or so).

    • @jamespinette9403
      @jamespinette9403 Рік тому

      @@MidLifeCards Yes, I agree. I believe I read an article some years ago that in those years they produced something like 5 times the amount of baseball cards than the did of the other 3 major sports as baseball was indeed the major pastime. As a kid, I don’t even recall seeing any football cards around in the 60s.

    • @chrisolivo6591
      @chrisolivo6591 Рік тому

      @@jamespinette9403 No doubt that Namath’s prices are out of proportion with better QB’s. This happens all the time in our hobby and popularity and personality are more important then stats sometimes.
      Look at Tim Duncan rookies vs Kobe rookies. Kobe rookies are 3-4 times more expensive than Duncan. Yet Duncan won the same titles and is probably the greatest PF ever in the NBA. Heck, Duncan is almost forgotten despite retiring less than a decade ago.
      Namath is one of the few NFL players from that era that still resonates in pop culture. Do you think a 25 year old NFL fan would know who Bart Starr is? I guarantee they would know who Namath is. Unfortunately that’s how our hobby works.

  • @ACD1994
    @ACD1994 Рік тому

    I feel like if you were do a video of vintage basketball rookie cards from this similar time period, there wouldn't be a much difference, in prices. Kareem, Dr. J and Wilt can go for big money, but there are, so many hall of famers from that ere, which are mostly forgotten about. For some reason, Bird/Magic seems to be the beginning of what now today are players talked about, and while those were both great iconic players, I still think basketball was greatly under rated and appreciated in the 60's and, guess you can say the same about football. I've been watching football for over 25 years, in my opinion this sport does a poor job in honoring the legends of the game...some of these players on your list are barely talked about or known, ...baseball, there seems to be, greater and stronger appreciation or recognition for their historical eras...which, could be part of the reason vintage rookie cards of baseball players from that time period on average, are more expensive.

    • @MidLifeCards
