You've developed such a great sense for balancing entertainment and information. Your earlier stuff was good too, don't get me wrong, I just felt inspired to share that thought.

Kingdom come is miles behind when it comes to actually implementing their combat. Sure their animations look cool and the ripostes are nifty historical manuscript techniques, but in practice fighting in the game is clunky at best. You get soft locked onto one target so you can't look around freely to get a good view of everyone you're fighting (often multiple opponents), each enemy you fight has a chance to just auto parry riposte you and you're locked into an animation for a few seconds, and it's not clear what to do to mitigate this. On realism in the sense of how combat actually works on an input level Mordhau is the best we've ever gotten in any game. The way you can draw someone out with a feint to get them to commit to an action and punish them with it, how you can size someone up and make split second decisions to fake them out, how all weapons are drawn out in REAL TIME on their locations to register a hit (holy shit the 240 system is insane), Mordhau is the best we've ever gotten and likely the best we'll have for years and years.
I couldn't agree more, Mordhau has a way to go but if the devs actually care about it and keep bringing life into it (ship boarding battles pls) then it will become even greater
yeah because matrix dodging is super realistic. the targeting mechanics of kingdom come are shit, that much is true, but i played the game a lot and fighting multiple opponents is just a matter of experience, if you just rush in and start spamming attack you are going to die, better to back off, try not to get surrounded and defend until you can find an oppening.
Mordhau combat is about spinning and moving like you are having a stroke, definitely not as realistic as kingdom come deliverance. The game is fun, but most of it’s fights don’t look like fights.
I'd say that Mordhau seems more "arcade:y" due to the fact that the game is mostly aboyt multiplayer combat matches. It doesn't seem to delve to deeply into experiencing medieval society or culture. However, the combat system seems more advanced than Kingdome Come Deliverance. You can't really do Mordhau strikes in KCD. Sword cuts still deal damage to opponents wearing full plate etc.
the people who are best in mordhau move like rubber people, the game is less about actual combat, more about finding the exploits, like making a strike that cannot be parried and then proceeding to rubber person your way around. don't get me wrong mordhau is a lot of fun at the medium level were people actually use combat, on higher level it's just rubber people using extreme fast wind up strikes and matrix dodging evry attack
@@tommerker8063To be fair, there is no such thing as an unblockable strike in this game, some drags cannot be chambered if you dont have enough experience but you can parry everything, in theory. It got really competitive as the windup of a strike is about half a second, so for hardcore gamers its pretty easily doable, for casuals this game has a skill ceiling that is way too high to be anywhere near fun.
@@FunnyFreak_ yeah but accels/drags make zero sense from a physics standpoint. The weapons also don't really have a "sweet spot". Pretty much hitting anywhere on a weapon deals the full damage as long as you hit after the short "glance" window on release. Idk why anyone would expect mordhau to be anywhere near reality based. But the swordplay really bugs me with Mordhau because it's honestly not much different than Chiv 1. Even when Mordhau launched, it launched off of the backs of Chivalry 1 players for the most part. At this point drags and accels were fairly common in the genre. Plus the fact that you cannot hold the block is just silly. The combat is boiled down to exploiting the fliching block mechanic and it's cooldown, as well as exploiting the animations to confuse your enemy. It's a great amount of fun though. I love many features Chiv 2 introduced (jab function mostly). But mordhau I have always come back to since 2019 and probably always will. Even though the game is at such a dead state that the only people that really play Mordhau are those who only play mordhau.
7:44 this is what i wish was introduced to this game - ability for heavy weapons to disarm enemies carrying light ones, eg. you block a halberd with a dagger, boom it flies out of your hand
My experience with disarming someone when they are parrying with foamed pipe "swords" says that the way to do it is rapid strikes at the blade from different directions with no intention to hit them directly. Just force them to fumble around parrying overly hard hits multiple times per second then give their sword a good whack to the guard area.
Stamina would be better represented by making both strikes and parries slower in my opinion. Dropping a sword or simply being unable to parry at all because you ran out of stamina isn't very realistic. It doesn't take much effort or energy to just move a sword for a parry. The challenge is to do it fast enough. And the more tired your muscles get, the slower you will become.
Moving a sword for a parry is not a problem. Keeping your grip with a strong opponent lays into you is the main thing to deal with. I dont know if you ever did any HEMA or similar full contact sports but combat is FUCKING TIRING. There is quite a bit of mass moving at very high speeds with lots of muscle behind it. That's also part of the reason why parrying a Zweihänder with a cleaver or a rapier is absurd. You'd never be able to withstand the impact, especially with the hanging point that is used for most blocks ingame. So no, it's not all that unrealistic - I've dropped my axe a number of times when I was completely worn out, although that was usually due to pulling forces, not impact
Only downside in Mordhau is that the community nowadays can be very toxic. Like for example: if I dodge attacks, my own teammembers attack me, because they did not like the way I played the game. But it is a mechanic in the game, so I should be allowed to use it. Same for bows/crossbows. People can bitch about it in the chat all the time. I get it if I would cheat ofcourse. But I didn't
Another pommel-throw in a video game! That comes right from you, man, so congratulations. You have personally, in your own unpredictable way, affected world-wide pop culture. You don't get to choose what or when, but your input has indeed released a new life of an idea. Embrace the madness!
Something that *REALLY* annoys me (I think they nerfed it in a patch just recently) was that the executioner sword, you know, a single edged sword with no point, still did just as much stabbing damage as pointed weapons.
you mentioned in your old vid about dual wielding that most of the times when a person chooses to dual wield, they usually wield a one-handed sword type of weapon and a dagger or a shorter blade weapon or they just wield 2 short blade weapons. just now i remembered that in warframe (a video game), the dual wield weapons are actually like that. 1 medium sized blade and a shorter sized blade. and the other dual wield weapons that arent like that are daggers or short blade weapons. excluding the whole space-ninja-robot-thingies, how realistic do you think warframe is? (the usability of the melee weapons in particular). would love to see a vid on that game cuz i'm really curious. cool vid btw.
You can block with the bucher knife for gameplay purpose, but as matter of effect blocking with a small knife costs you more stamina and if you got 0 stamina, then your next block will disarm you
Skal, play Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Old school sword game, but mostly a kicking simulator. I think you would enjoy it. Hope to see you in Newfoundland randomly visiting someday. :P
The great thing with mordhau is that even though it's not a super accurate representation of real life martial arts it does very well to capture the spirit of martial arts. It is essentially it's own martial art in the way you learn it and develop your skills in it while also forming a fighting style that is entirely your own. Though it's not accurate to real life I feel like it's consistency, variety, fluidity, and just everything about it really captures the sort of feeling that a real martial art has. It sacrifices accuracy for the sake of being the best it can possibly be for something you have to control with a mouse and keyboard.
Oh, erm...Uh...What was the witty comment I put on the original video? I can't remember... Something something Chivalry, Naked Filthy Peasants, Lutes and Pickaxes and Communism... Ah, I remember! My dad was killed in Mexico in 1982 in a small town called Habana. If anyone knows any information leading to the capture of his killer, please get in touch with me.
Not sure if you still do Fantasy Weapons Scrutinized, but I would be _really_ interested in an analysis of the scissor swords from season 2 of _Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency._ I realize they're not meant to be taken seriously, and I figure in their current form, they'd have similar issues to Kingdom Hearts' Keyblades, but I wonder if something like this could be feasible at all.
The way I see it, Mordhau manages to be realistic enough to be interesting, but unrealistic enough to don't be boring. For example, it is really satisfying to just smash a full armored opponent's head, but that would be a really unlikely to happen scenario in real life. Even so, in the game, despite possible it is hard to do so because they are using heavy armor.
I would love the Mordhau team to sit down with the For Honor team. The movement in For Honor felt solid while the attack mechanics felt lacking. Mordhau movement is just bad and looks even worse. If we could have the planted/weighted feel of For Honor's combat with the attack/counter system of Mordhau we'd have a masterpiece.
Hey Skall, could you make a video talking about the differences between a Jingum and a Katana? Or at least mentioning about which one is better in any other video, I'm not a patreon, so I understand if you decide to not doing it, but I love your videos and I allways watch them. Anyway, thanks.
Jumping is also not a good idea in Mordhau, it costs stamina and doesn't really do much of anything for you so that is also technically historically accurate. Just because someone does it in a clip doesn't mean it's what you're supposed to do or that it's any good!
Jumping attacks are a good way to get your legs chopped off in Mordhau. A lot of the strangeness could be explained away with the fact that they're all mercenaries.
One multiplayer game I have yet to encounter a proper troll in is One Hour One Life. It seems having no continuity between lives except being born to a random mother in the same world means those who want to make the world worse end up with nobody to harass and destroying their own world as badly as everyone else's.
It's Illuminate by Vindsvept. I did some Googling and I found a video from November 22, 2019 entitled "This Is Not What It Looks Like..." with the name in the description, then I found it on UA-cam and verified.
Is that piece you're wearing intended to be somewhat historically accurate? If so, maybe that's the kind of armor that "studded leather armor" in movies is supposed to resemble
is it accurate? Not in the slightest. Is it the most ridiculous monty python and the search for the holy grail over the top meme hilarity? It sure is. When a dagger can no longer block a 2handed maul then I will seriously consider testing a game for accuracy. For now here are two videos on EXTENSIVE testing to see how accurate mordhau is! ua-cam.com/video/8UoYGNgfWsM/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/XnKh3G3v6Bg/v-deo.html
Speaking of video games, do you think people that frequently play video games would be better at sword fighting than someone from the medieval ages given that the gamer has the exact same amount of training as the person from that time period? Basically what I'm asking, is reaction time a strong correlation to better swordsmanship?
I suppose that until there's true VR with two hand controllers, there will never be a truly accurate medieval combat system. Then they would have to use realistic techniques and who knows, might learn to use a weapon in the real world. There would have to be controller gloves with some form of feedback as if you were really using a weapon (and shield or dual weapon), but not too much. I don't think anyone wants feedback to bruise or break their arms. There could also be a vest and helmet that would let you know if you've taken a hit to your vitals. Perhaps even have an HUD in the helmet to see things as game elements. I'm sure it will come out on PS12 or X-Box Six. :)
Anachronism doesn't mean it's unrealistic, unless it's trying to emulate history. There's nothing *unrealistic* about things that didn't coexist temporally in our own history coexisting at the same time on another world - it's well within the realm of possibility, it simply never happened in history. Kite shield with rapier, for example - it's totally possible, in a fantasy setting.

We didn't even ask this time. You must like the game ;) hint hint
I am dying to know whats the name of the song in the begining! He puts it in all of his videos and never writes its name anywhere
It's Illuminate by Vindsvept. I did some Googling and I found a video from November 22, 2019 entitled "This Is Not What It Looks Like..." with the name in the description, then I found it on UA-cam and verified.
Mordhau, the game who made me realize that I'm not good at gaming like I used to be..
Same lol.
You should definitely do a video talking about the realism of Mordhau
Just commenting to help the reupload go viral too
8:58 right now I am not covering a lot of my body. Skall wears no pants proven?
Is that piece you're wearing intended to be somewhat historically accurate? If so, maybe that's the kind of armor that "studded leather armor" in movies is supposed to resemble
Skallagrim when are you gonna play that game mordhau?
I think your talking more about the technical limitations of the devs like the horse movement and player movement but I understand thing like jumping.
Nice little stab at the corrected translation of your meme phrase.
Have you played Mordhau yet? Will you make a video about it?
Der gute alte Mordschlag. Mein mittelalterliche Vorfahr ist stolz auf mich, dass ich mir Videos über Schwertkampf ansehe😂.
Cleaver vs fully armored knight: 2 hit you are dead. Very realistic lol
Reaction to Chivalry 2 trailer when?
7:06 notice how he literally hit him in the head
is it accurate? Not in the slightest. Is it the most ridiculous monty python and the search for the holy grail over the top meme hilarity? It sure is. When a dagger can no longer block a 2handed maul then I will seriously consider testing a game for accuracy. For now here are two videos on EXTENSIVE testing to see how accurate mordhau is!

10:10 so DO you play it to this day?
You’ve yet to do bloodborne yet, that one definitely feels deserving of a video
Ever heard of this game called Mordhau looks cool, you should do a video on it Skall
neorenamon Sounds like that VR game Skal played some months ago.
neorenamon I really want to feel my ribs crack on a war hammer hit
super interesting thanks !
Cool, missed this the first time around. Shame it probably won't hit the same metrics though :(
Anachronism doesn't mean it's unrealistic, unless it's trying to emulate history. There's nothing *unrealistic* about things that didn't coexist temporally in our own history coexisting at the same time on another world - it's well within the realm of possibility, it simply never happened in history. Kite shield with rapier, for example - it's totally possible, in a fantasy setting.
This is great, but when are you going to play Mordhau?
