And one of the first times he performed it in public, too. It was from (of all places) when he was the guest on Saturday Night Live....the same episode where he's playing someone with a squeaky voice at a talent agency, and Eddie Murphy is trying to teach him how to move and sing like Stevie Wonder. "He still sucks!" I remember watching this episode when it aired and he just unleashes this in the middle of the show, and it was stunning....like what the heck did I just hear? It was kind of a friendly reminder from him like, "In case you forgot...I'm the most musically talented person on Earth."
@@Fugettaboutit Thanks so much for sharing that! I couldn't help but think that many in the audience (based on that thunderous applause and screams) subconsciously knew they had just bore witness to something fantastic. Maybe even historical.
@@wcstrawberryfields8011 Imagine the SNL band just sitting there listening. They must have been blown away. Especially this version with just his piano accompaniment as opposed to the full recorded version. Just how distinct and beautifully complex the song structure is in as intimate a presentation as it gets. Absolute magic.
I saw this on SNL the night it was originally performed - live. It was an astonishing performance and I think that it remains the single best recording of this song. Imagine hearing this for the very first time on live television! I'll never forget it. Thank you Stevie and thank you to whomever found this and put it here!

Nobody writes songs like Stevie. The man is an absolute genius in how he can craft something beautiful, memorable and complex all in one.
The dislikes are done by people who have a serious lack of music education, or people who do it by purpose just to be mean !! Queen´s "Bohemian Rahpsody" was elected as the song of the century, but in my openion Stevie´s "Overjoyed" is the song of century, becauseit´s one man/one piano and a genious work of art...

Perhaps the best, most powerful song ever written. Stevie Wonder has written and performed so many hits, but there is something very real and pure about just his piano and his voice. I remember how I felt when I saw him perform this on Saturday Night Live many years ago. Wow!

I prefer this version to the studio version. I like how bare it is, without that overwrought Disney-esque string arrangement muddying it up in the background. There's a few minor hiccups in this version, but they actually make it more endearing.

I witnessed this performance on SNL in 1983. At that time I'd woodshedded for 4 pain filled years to develop solo arrangements for a prayed for career in Piano Bar. God blessed me with that career which still continues. Always remember to ASK GOD FOR HELP (James 4:2). THANKS genius Stevie Wonder for one of your most beautiful compositions. When I was 5 I used to listen to this song on repeat (I'm young, so I had the luxury of CDs when I was little) every night before I went to bed. I never went to look for it even though I loved it, but I stumbled across this while watching a video of Tom Jones and Jerry Lee Lewis. And I normally listen to punk, rock, and heavy metal. BobsArtGallery NBC is notoriously greedy. They essentially stole a lot of Conan O'Brien's material when they ruthlessly fired him after moving him, his family, his entire staff and their families to Los Angeles in a ploy to garner headlines and remove him from the network in favor of Jimmy Fallon. They could've just fired him and replaced him with Fallon, but Jeff Zucker is a ruthless, evil bastard who has had a rivalry with Conan since they were both in college at Harvard.

I feel it should be up to the Artist to determine control ol live TV performances, not the broadcaster. The work belongs to the performer, not some suit sitting in an office at NBC.

This song got me through my grandmother's death she died on May 10th 1986 I was 22 years old how could anyone possibly hate on this song I remember some months before watching this on Saturday Night Live and loving it then only to discover the other version that was more enhanced beautiful music has Stevie Wonder ever put out something bad? How privileged that crowd was to hear the very first performance of this gem, though it was written in 1979; the song wasn't released till his 1985 album.
I would tremble in fear if I had to follow up a performance after Stevie Wonder. Great voice, great heart and the ability to laugh at himself. I think he was hosting Snl and did a Polaroid sketch where he was taking photos, totally random photos, and delivered the tagline, "So easy anyone could use it!".
