    About Geoff:
    Geoff is a world-renowned permaculture consultant, designer and teacher. He has established permaculture demonstration sites that function as education centres in all the world’s major climates - information on the success of these systems is networked through the Permaculture Research Institute and the www.permaculturenews.org website.
    About Permaculture:
    Permaculture (en.wikipedia.o...) integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies - imitating the no waste, closed loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts and at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics and community development.

    Just fall on top of the lantana! That was awesome! Did you know in areas that are too cold, people plant lantana cultivars in their flower beds? It’s interesting the concept of what we call weeds is really subjective. Maybe an exception is if it’s dangerous like giant hogweed.

    There was a beautiful Grove of large spruce trees close by my home. I used to go there to walk among the old growth trees.
    The spruce budworm killed a large section of it so I went to collect the dead trees for firewood.
    While doing so, I found that the forest used to be a huge vegetable garden!

    Couldn’t agree with Geoff more. Buy deforested land and work to reforest it, instead of buying naturally healthy forest and cutting it down to put up food forests. I also love his point about not selling your land to people who will deforest the property.

    The quality of an ecosystem is probably best determined by the number of connections within it, the same measure you would use to assess it's resilience.

    Reminds me of the bloke who bought Bill's old property over near Mt Warning and then proceeded to bulldoze some of the magnificent forests that Bill grew. He ended up rolling his bulldozer and died as a result.

      Hola Sergio,
      La idea principal es si el bosque es de alta calidad, déjalo. Usted hace un juicio sobre cuándo dejar la tierra sola o modificarla. Ser defensor de la naturaleza. Algunos pedazos de tierra no deben ser perturbados. Hay valor en las plantas de sucesión no nativas, que preparan la tierra para el bosque.

      Yes. Because by that time its an ecosystem which will sort itself out over time. We need to think over natures timescales, not ours

    In South India , Prosposis julifora is an invasive species and in some places there's no other plants or trees growing except only it for acres and acres . The soil it grows has no life in it and doesn't create life but it's successive single species forest in many places . What can it be done ? Julifora trees doesn't die unless it's been cut and burnt to the ground . It's leaves and stems are not suitable for producing biomass or compost due to a numerous reasons . I know permaculture can convert it but how to use the existing trees to our advantage in the initial stages ?

    • @jesserahimzadeh4298
      @jesserahimzadeh4298 5 років тому

      It sounds like it is growing in areas where there was significant disturbance since prosopis is a nitrogen fixing pioneer type plant. I've never worked with it being from a much cooler climate, but if it is cut and immediately replaced with a higher value plantings, the nitrogen and light release would boost the new plantings into the canopy and eventually the prosopis would disappear or just become an under story depending on its light needs. The same thing can be said for Autumn Olive and Japanese Knotweed in the Eastern U.S.

      @@jesserahimzadeh4298 Prosposis is a nitrogen fixer but at the same time it dries out the water table and as it grows well in saline soil , in my place salt water intrusion has increased due to his trees and we are not permitted to cut Prosposis without a permission from the municipality and law .
      With no water and with salt crust forming the soil only a few land is fit for agriculture in my village

    • @jesserahimzadeh4298

      Those are certainly unique challenges. Depending on the punishment and level of actual enforcement, I would cut them anyway. If you personally have control/ownership of the land, you should try some strategies to reverse the salination of the land and to try establishing better forest within your means.

      @@jesserahimzadeh4298 I don't know anything about Julifora, but I'm assuming that chopping in the wrong manner might proliferate the seeds? I wouldn't attempt to eradicate Japanese knotweed without permission as I'd probably make a mess of it!

    • @jesserahimzadeh4298
      @jesserahimzadeh4298 5 років тому

      Rico S they are going to drop seed no matter what. The pattern I’m talking about is to cut the nitrogen fixing pioneer and immediately plant things that will take over the canopy in time. The pioneer species will almost certainly re-sprout and then you just cut it again. All that is happening is more nitrogen being released and more organic matter on the ground which in this case, could bind to the salt in the soil and allow a greater variety of plants to grow. There’s really no ‘invasive’ plants, it’s just a matter of how you perceive them.

    does that manual say anything about growing tropical fruits in a temperate climate? i need to no the best way to not have to water so much on a rental property while not causing root rot in winter, as a vegan i find it strange that people are focusing on animal cuntry and no1s really focusing on the plants, i only care about growing fruit

      Important to make sure you are in the right hardiness zone for a plant first, then to avoid root rot you want really well draining soil
