  • Today I'm exploring the UNI-T UTi690A thermal camera that Banggood sent me in the last mailbag.
    It's the most affordable thermal camera that I have been able to find, and it seems like a good value for a hobbyist, if you need to do some basic thermal imaging.

    This isn't the only way to do it.
    It's probably not the best way to do it.
    But it's how I do it.

    I have the one that is truly the cheapest one you can buy on Bangood and I have to say that this one is worlds better. My $125 one has some uses, but the resolution and build quality of this one is night and day different. Both have their uses, but this one would be a lot more useful to the average homeowner/hobbyist.
    One thing I REALLY like about these cameras is that you don't have to allow components to get hot. You can limit the current to avoid damage and the camera can see that something is relatively hotter than the parts around it. So you can identify shorts at 50 or 100ma and not risk damaging the other parts on the board. Truly a useful bit of kit.

    Uni-T often has multiple models available that look exactly the same but have different specs. This makes it quite hard to find what you want since you have to compare them all and see which one is right for you at the cost of what you're willing to spend.

    I also brought uti120s about $135 from aliexpress recently. It's similar specification of uti690a. It's works good :)

    Always good for you to get free stuff and the reviews are good for us to deciding what might be tempting to buy.

    Good to see the prices coming down on these; still a little beyond my meagre budget, so for now I will have to stick to the "poke around with finger, see if it sizzles and burns" testing method 😋

    The white hot setting is incredible for me (colour blind also) in most circumstances it looks just like a bw camera. Perfect. I find rainbow HC very hard to view in terms of definition.

    What is the resolving power from this unit? Can it spot hot 0805 SMD components, or is the resulution not high enough for that?

    I wonder when they get really good processor for this tool, without image lagging. I mean realtime.
    All tools i have seen right now, their pictures are not smooth, they slowly change image.
    I know its a lot of data to process. Better cpu = no lag. But still they are very useful, There are ones that can be plugged into Android phone and it does same thing.
    But they also are expensive. But they work. They also can be rented. But 3-4 rents and you can actually buy it

    Doesn't WINE run x86, because I remember decades ago I was running calc.exe, notepad.exe, etc, in Linux. All "cheap stuff" software from China is only in x86, and it's a lot to miss out on if Linux can't do it, eg, program a bios chip externally.

      Well, that makes sense. In the overall scheme of things, Linux is pretty much zero percent of the market.
      I truly hate Windows, but I haven't got time for all the bullsh!t that goes along with Linux.

    1:50 - since you actually want to keep and use this tool, why peel off the perfectly functional screen protector?
    Yeah, I know it's your little joke. However it's kind of like cutting your nose off to spite your face.
    Will you play some other music when you peer through your scratched up screen in the future?

    • @calderjonhughes
      @calderjonhughes 2 роки тому

      That’s not a screen protector in normal terms. It’s applied for shipping. It’s not optically clear and will interfere with the display in use.

    • @johncoops6897
      @johncoops6897 2 роки тому

      @@calderjonhughes - It's not there just for shipping - there isn't any sand inside the packing bag and nobody will reach inside the carton to try and scratch it up while in transit LOL
      That screen film is perfectly clear enough for viewing a really LOW-RES screen, and much more opticaly clear that a scratched up one that you can never repair.
      It"s free, it's fitted, and it protects the screen from scratching during normal use. If there actually was an aftermarket protector available, then sure you could peel the original off and replace it. Otherwise, it's just moronic to remove it.
      Btw- you realise that matt films help visibility? A screen protector doesn't need to be "optically clear" anyway.

    • @calderjonhughes
      @calderjonhughes 2 роки тому

      @@johncoops6897 it has a pull tab to enable it to be removed. Like may LCD screens. The protection is important as it is applied pre-assembly and pre-packing. Times when the screen really IS at risk of damage. The rubber outer of the case is raised to protect the screen from scratches.

      @@calderjonhughes - OK, you win the internet. No point in arguing with you, it's obvious you already know everything.
      Me: I cut off any tabs (very rare) and leave the factory screen protector on the screen. All my screens are 100% scratch free - go figure. 🙄
