- This video is on casting a bearing housing that Keith Rucker of vintagemachinery.org provided a pattern for. Also for giggles a deer has been thrown in the mold.
Enjoy

Keith is lucky to have a good friend like you. We all are lucky to be able to watch your great videos. Keep on pouring.
I am grateful to have all of you as my friend👍
Always a pleasure and an education to watch your videos. Thanks very much.
Thanks Bruce👍
Clarke, they way your sense of humor comes across in your editing is great.
Great videos, I enjoy them very much, many thanks 😊
Thanks Paul👍
Glad you've recovered from the storm and back to casting. We had -14 degrees the coldest morning here in NW OK. We're not prepared for that either. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks for keeping us up to date on the shops progress. Enjoyed it
Thanks Rusty👍
Hello Clarke, another interesting video, just goes to show how much skill you have, 👍👍👍, allways liked to watch you working, thinking about you a month ago, a small Foundry not far from me had to close 😢 sad. Anyway watch out for your videos. Geoff Lewis, Wales, UK, 🏴🏴🏴
Thanks Geoff and yes it's very sad when foundries close there doors. What happened at White Chapel makes me sick. I was actually planning a tour there and then found out they no longer run the original foundry
I enjoyed the lesson and the hodgepodge. Every minute was interesting and entertaining.
Good to see you post another video Clarke. I don't care the Ice we had it here as well but didn't loose power or anything. We had ice for a couple of days then it snowed 5 or 6 inches. LOL Looked like Dollar was full of him self. LOL Looks like you are staying busy for sure. Give the pups a treat and belly rub for me. Please take care of your self and have a good week. God Bless!!
Thanks nashguy and glad you didn't lose power. I'll be sure and give Dollar a run for you👍
Yeah! You need one of those deer ornaments on that 1K truck. Hehe!
Yes I think the old truck needs some bling😁
I'm Glad to hear you went to lunch with your Dad. Some of my most cherished moments were having lunch with my Dad. Now my son calls me several times a week and takes me to lunch. Awesome!!!!!
Danny you are correct. I lost my mother in 95 so I don't take time with my dad for granted👍
@@windyhillfoundry5940 Awesome, Sir!!!!
That cast iron deer is pretty cute!
When I saw you parked at Buckee's, I thought you had come to Texas!!! Then realized, that's the new one they opened over in Alabama/Florida.
Sure enjoy the casting work you do there. I've been around several foundries in past lives where we had iron castings poured. My favorite foundry was Alamo Iron Works that used to be over in San Antonio, Texas. Long gone! I can come up with a dozen things to get you to cast, I won't bother right now. I know your are busy. Thanks for sharing your videos. KenS
Excellent video Clark....Covered a little bit of what's going on your way...Hope you and yours are doing OK now...Blessing u'all's way of course....Thanks very much....See you next time my friend....!
Thanks Steve that is very kind of you👍
Good job Sir. The deer sure was not easy
Thanks Henrik👍
Nice presentation on how to cast such a complex figure. Thank You for that.
20 degrees F ... well we have that kind of weather 4 months (minimum) every year. I know, this doesn't make You feel any warmer but the strange thing is that at some point You get used to it. I have this problem of adjusting myself to winter and then back to summer annually. It takes about three weeks for me to do that.
What can make that 20 degrees F feel really bad is the wind and the moisture (ice storm). The wind amplifies the effect by a factor and so does the moisture. Despite my live long experience of cold weather, Your's is probably one that would make me feel really cold. I don't envy You.
Here are some hints for You:
- wear layers. Something fluffy against the skin and something windproof on the top. Having a wool pullover does not help alone as the air passes right through it.
- there is no shame being dressed like a michelin man. If it makes You feel better then go for it.
- sleep well. Being tired in a miserable weather is a recipe for misery
- eat well.
- think positively. Having that snow makes the scenery really bright - doesn't it!
Best regards from Finland!
Thanks so much for the tips. Hopefully we have the worst behind us this year but I will definitely keep this in mind for next year👍
keep on keeping on Clarke! One man can only do so much. Hang in there and I hope your recovery is fantastic! Keep up the good work!
Thanks Eric👍
The chilly spell brought you a nice break. Here it got down to -29, below 0 for most of a week. Not a record but too cold for an old man. 16" of the white stuff, dog loves it.
Larry that is way too cold for me🥶
Enjoyed it Clark......thanks for the video!!!!
Sure thing Mike 👍
Good to be busy. Nice. 23F here this morning, 8in of snow on the ground.
Thanks Randy and I hope those temps don't bother you as much as me. I was born in Michigan so you'd think I would be fully adapt to that mess
Here in N. Indiana weather like you got hit with is an annual occurence so we stay prepared. Still have some frozen pipes and either learn to drive on icy roads, use a lot of road salt or pay high car body repair costs. Houses are built with better windows and lots of insulation. I'm happy that you are recovering.
Came for a deer, wasn't disappointed.
Amazing work Clark, lots of intricate details on the antlers and I when I saw the antlers I thought it would be near impossible to get a parting line.
Also Kieth did a great job on the pattern, he knows how to make one.
Thanks Johan👍
Enjoyed the video. The next time you have something like the deer that you don't want to drill a hole in use what we in the Navy called "Monkey shit" (actually called Duct seal). The compound is pretty sticky so you would take a small piece of it (about gob that would easily be gripped by your thumb and fore finger) press it onto the casting and wiggle it out of the sand. Works great. Looking forward to you casting a couple of mold weights.
Thanks for the tips as always Sandrammer. If I ever get these jobs caught up I will be sure and do that. Right now I am receiving more jobs than I am getting out
@@windyhillfoundry5940 , man I wish I lived close to you. I’d love to stop by and give you a hand. Oh well, I’ll have to settle for videos and texts.
Living in norther Iowa we are well aware of the cold, ice, and snow and are pretty much prepared for it. We can't imagine how rough it was down your way since this sort of weather is not supposed to go that far south. I have a friend in San Antonio and they had it rough as well. Hope the weather straightens out for the entire country. We had seven inches of snow yesterday and are sick of it.
Thanks Dan, I know all about Iowa. My wife and her family are from north east Iowa and y'all definitely get your share of snow. It's beautiful country up there and we will be canoeing there this summer.
Keep up the good work
Thanks Dan👍
I really enjoy your videos. I don't know if I'll ever cast anything, but it sure is fun to watch. It was really nice to hear you meeting your Dad for lunch. If you ask me, you have your priorities in line.
Thanks Chuck, that's very kind👍
I found it funny when you said it's not a temperature or climate controlled env... that's the big furnace should be able to heat that barn...
keep on doing what you're doing... those tails were wagging pretty good, happy pups.. good home.
that deer came out good. I thought it was going to pull a chunk of packing out.
Thanks, yes the furnace does produce about a 10 degree temp rise. Unfortunately it requires electricity also😞
Compared to others, we fared well. Snow, freeze, more rain and there was no going anywhere. Low of 1F, but we had electricity for an hour or so, off for 30 minutes, off just once for 4 hours, so it was never real cold inside. We had about 6 inches of snow, after we had 8 previous that had thankfully melted away. Generally here (North of Houston) we get a little dusting maybe every other year. Heck, I don't even own a snow shovel or scraper.
Sounds like you were lucky compared to farther south👍
I’ve been watching but just can’t remember what all the terms mean.
I’m getting there gradually.
Hey, I’m going to cope the spru down to the next riser. Drives the girls wild at parties. ;).
Still loving your work!
Those terms mean nothing to my wife 😁
I love your videos.. copper would be awesome to see!
My hair greyed shortly after the kid learned to walk. He walked off the top step of the basement stairs. I was a step and a half too slow. He tumbled head over heel down to the landing, bounced off the wall, then sat up - and started laughing. It was the scariest moment of my whole life. Wish you well.
Clarke, good entertainment as usual. Don't fret the grey hair. It's when you don't have any that's a problem. Head gets cold in winter, wet when it rains and burned in the summer. Biggest problem I have now is getting a hair cut. Pretty soon it'll be sheering season. Keep up the good work and stay healthy. Regards from Canada's banana belt
When I was about 3 I pedalled my toy metal tractor off the top step of our 2 story house but I didn't sit up laughing, that may be what is wrong with me now🤔
Oh I'm losing it also, I'm about ready to just shave my head and be another Ray Caniglia😁
That deer was amazing to me. I'm used to seeing fairly simple geometric shapes like you do for Keith, and what I have seen Mr. Pete do. That complicated pattern really surprised me.
Thanks, and I bet Mr. Pete is ok with the hood ornament.
I'm in Edmonton Alberta and it'll always get cold (-41 degrees both F & C) in the winter some time and for awhile. Cheers
Thought you were gonna have a trespassing deer in the shop. That deer turned out great, thinking this, better to have a deer on your hood than one in the grill, lol.
Fortunately we didn't lose power but still got cold enough to freeze my heeler to a tree in the morning, lol.
Wood burning fireplace and an LP torpedo heater. Might be a good project, cast iron, wood burning stove.
Thanks and be careful.
Thanks Donnie, if I ever can get caught up on everyone else I'll do that👍
Great job! Be careful running that heater indoors...CO-2.
Always👍
Very neat, thanks.
Thanks Tom👍
I truly laughed out loud when you said: "I wonder?" @21:25
Got to make my Ford appealing😁
Don't worry about the hair, it is called pandemic hair. I had to give myself a haircut and it looks far worse than yours. Hope you guys recovered from that bad storm, here in NM we did not have the power shut off so were much better off. Really liked this video, years ago I tried something like that deer, yours is so much better than my attempt. Keep the videos coming they are enjoyed much.
Thank you
Wow, you didn't pick an easy shape for the demo! Man that takes a lot of knowledge and skill - and both parts came out looking really good!
Thanks Fred👍
Thanks for sharing! Yeah, camping indoors gets old fast. We got a combination of ice and snow too with 2 weeks without power. We're still ckeaning up the tree falls.
Craig you got it far worse than we did. Sorry you had to go through all of that. Hopefully life gets back to normal for y'all soon👍
LOVE the hood ornament idea
Yes Doug I think the Ford needs some bling😁
Can't wait to see the chess set being poured.........
I'll be sure to do a video 👍
That was pretty cool Clark. I see Windy Hill Movie Company in your future. 🎬
🤣 Bill I'll make us famous
GREAT intro shot of the forge!
Thanks Doug👍
You are mistaken. Your shop is like mine solar heated and cooled. We are both going with the green movement. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
My thermostat stays broken though
6” down there is like 14” up here ! Your just not setup to deal with it both machinery and man power ! I worked in Houston and it was shut down because of 2” of snow and ice ! A cop asked to see my DL and noticed I’m from Minnesota and sent me on my way ! You do nice work sir !
My wife is from Iowa and goggles everytime we shut things down over a 1/2" of dust😁
@@windyhillfoundry5940 I like the deer hood ornament idea ! 💡 !
Thanks mate, great video and the deer turned out great!
Thanks Paul👍
Good video
Thanks Glenn👍
I would look into laminating a piece of 1/4" plywood on the griddle to give it some extra thickness. Good luck with your projects. You have your work cut out for you. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks and yes, I am going to add some thickness to it for sure. I may have to add multiple risers also
Hey Clarke, heads up. You might not have seen the weather news yet but there is supposed to be real bad weather hitting your neck of the woods tomarrow (this is 3/16/2021 1108 pm my time) batten down the hatches bud!
Thanks Sandrammer, I hope this turns out to dissolve by the time it gets here
Love to watch your work. Many years ago, I periodically helped a friend cast aluminum meter bases and he had metal boxes for his molds. He also had a cheap air press to compress the sand. Is there a reason this wouldn't make your life easier? From my recollection, it just seems like it would be much faster and more productive to invest in such. Your comment? And thanks for your videos.
Hi Tony and thanks for your input. I have a hydralic die lift that I retrofitted years ago for really big molds. I rarely use it now. Most of the molds I do these days are best hand rammed. I also have pneumatic hammers but these are overkill for most of my work
Nice cope down of a complicated pattern. Hey Clarke have you ever done an instructional of how you temper your green sand?
Thanks Roger. I haven't covered much on the sand itself but I'll make a note of that👍
That deer turned out great! Boy, looks like you really got hit by that storm. We got down in the 20s here in SE Arizona, but no ice or snow.
Thanks Matt, we were lucky compared to everyone west of us. We just happened to fall right on the edge
6" of snow, -1°F and no electricty for four days in Dallas made it challenging to take care of our infant. Fortunately, we were able to relocate for a few days and had no burst pipes.
Jason I'm glad y'all were able to get to a safer environment. We were lucky, on the very eastern edge of the storm
Thank you sir! The whole affair was pretty wild, especially the losing power part of it.
Where are you located? That happen down there? Looks like us ,here in Dover, De. this winter. The doggies look great, especially seeing dollar. I think you much rather do molding than casting, always interesting to see what you're up to lately. Take care.
Thanks John, personally I would love to just do the molding but I'm the only one to get these poured😁. I am in central Mississippi, 2.5 hrs north of the gulf
Be well. Dollar's a lucky pup.
Thanks Josh👍
You all can have that Mississippi summer heat, I'll take the cold. Legally there's a limit to how much clothes one can take off. As o get older a whole house generator is looking better and better.
Anthony I have a generator that I insisted works fine to my wife. Then I found out it didnt, carburetor was leaking more fuel than the engine could consume😞
@@windyhillfoundry5940 that's right up there with cracked heat exchanger in furnace on coldest day of winter , 3 months after annual service. 19 years 348 days into 20 year pro rated warranty. Merry bleeping six grand. Maybe Ohio River valley, not too hot, not too cold 🤔,
Where is Mr. Peet didn't post anything last weekend? Good video.
Thanks Mike, I talked to him about 4 days ago and he was under the weather.
Glad to hear you're back to work. Those one-off jobs all look really interesting. Was that an angle grinder cutoff wheel on your bench grinder? And did you count your fingers after? 😁👍
Got all my fingers still here Jeff🖐
Yes the head stock may be over my capacity with the one man ladle though. I'll soon find out🤔
MrPete!!!
When your melting the iron do you have to use a flux to help it flow like I do with aluminum so the dross doesn't hold it to much?
No I don't flux iron.
Your sand looks like it could use alil reconditioning.
The sand isn't the only thing needing reconditioning. Everything needs attention around here😞
Is that a "2000" model ford? Looks identical to mine(quarter million miles on mine though.)
I thing mine has close to 250k as well. All I have to do is fill it with oil and check the gas
nothing runs like a deere
I like the hood ornament.
I’m very happy to see you doing more videos if that is the case, it’s possible I just haven’t been paying attention. However I enjoy your work immensely.
Best wishes from my family to your family.
kimberzelik@youtube
Thanks, it usually take at least two weeks before I can get a descent video
have you tried investment casting with Polystyrene plugs?
No Patrick, I do have ceramic slurry though
Have you ever done any cast iron garden gnomes?
Sorry, no I haven't Bud
@@windyhillfoundry5940
I have just 1. People are always wanting to buy or steal it. Could be a money maker for you.
@@jtjjbannie thanks for the tip👍
Clarke, you might want to invest in some heat tapes for your pipes. It's cheap insurance, and would pay for itself.
As for your cold shop, you could make a waste oil furnace as they are inexpensive to build and operate.
While I do understand what a tight budget feels like, this might be something useful.
ua-cam.com/video/kWul5SL2FOg/v-deo.html
Thanks Bryant. Yes the heat tape is a good idea and I say In going to do that every year. We have decided to re plumb everything next month so I may go ahead and do that this time👍.
I'll take a look at the video, thanks
Be careful with that deer hood ornament it could attract the real ones!
It is too climate controlled! The climate decides on IF you will work. Grin
Hot and cold running water in the shop, too. Hot in summer and cold in the winter.
Yes I have climate control with a broken thermostat 😁
