    I have several NESs. Replacing all the capacitors is just part of the refurb process.

    I was able to repair my NES by replacing capacitors also. I bought a NES capacitor kit, And i replaced all the electrolitic caps, In my case 7 of them. Not just the one shown in this video.

    I’m a little confuse, new to measuring caps but wouldn’t that cap be good? My esr table says anything under 0.14 or close to 0.14 should be good?? Mind explaining thanks

    What one Philips screwdriver can I get off amazon to unscrew old Nintendo console to get the 72 pin out ?

  • @LucasBudgell
    @LucasBudgell 3 роки тому +1

    I was able to get games to work after a minute of fighting with the connection, I wanted to make it more consistent so I boiled the 72 pin and cleaned the motherboard with 99% IPA. Fast forward to putting it back together and no there’s no video/ sound signal whatsoever, there would always be static atleast.
    What do you think this is?
    I’m just going to replace all caps

    Really enjoyed your vids and I was happy to become your 200th sub. My nintendo that I also got at a garage sale only works when the trey stays up but not when it goes down. from one of your other vids i saw you clean the bottom part of the board with an eraser, i didn't think to do that but did it the top part. I wonder if you encountered this problem and what a good fix is. Thanks

      I've seen something similar to this before. The previous owner bent the PINS up on the 72Pin adapter. At this point I'd look at replacing the 72 Pin.

    I replaced the 72 pin connector in my NES, and first try inserting Zelda it loaded up and I played for an hour. I took the game out, went to bed, came back the next day and tried to play again only to have a "white/grey" screen.. Confused I tried repositioning the game for 10 mins or so with ZERO response except grey. So I put the old 72 pin back in, and had to play the wiggle game with it for 10 mins and finally got the blinking light to stop, only to be greeted with a grey screen. I tried different games over and over in both connectors, and but the new connector never gives me a flashing light, only grey screen and solid red power light. I checked the voltage on the pin you suggested and have 13.6 with the power off, and 10.3-10.4 with the power on. I can't imagine my NES decided to die the day after a new pin connector was put in (especially after running for 2 hours fine) -- any thoughts?

    Excellent video, thanks for the lesson , I have my Nintendo with a "supposed" damage at the main procesor , the problem is that it is not reading the games, just 2 of them and when it does, the ambiance at the back doesnt move at the same time that the caracter. Do you think is that the problem?

    Nice repair series, man. I've been doing some NES repair on my old unit and gotten it working, but I'm still getting some wavy lines when I play. Research has told me one of the suggested solutions is replacing that capacitor. This is is a great how-to if it comes to that (and also a good tip for eyeballing if a cap is bad). I've never really done any soldering though is the thing. Do you know any good place for starter info on that?

    • @Tecnolock
      @Tecnolock  6 років тому

      Soldering is one of those things that you really learn from doing, my best advice is to pick up a couple cheap electronics project , a good soldering iron and to give it a go. Jameco has some nice/cheap Learn to Solder Practice Kits that would be perfect to learn on. Once the the projects are put together and working, try taking them back apart. Another thing to note, is its worth spending the money to get a good soldering iron, I use about a $30 Jensen iron that has worked great for years and is a great starting point. Next lever would be a soldering station but they are a bit pricey. Thank you for watching my vids and good luck with your repairs!

      So fastforward a few months and I got a multimeter to test the same way you did and the capacitor seems good. Have you ever encountered a NES that outputs a sin wave pattern on the screen? I've read online various solutions including replacing the main cap, new AV and new power. I've tried new cables but no dice, and based on my mm readings the cap is fine. Wondering if you had any ideas. Thanks!

  • @cirugiaretro
    @cirugiaretro 3 роки тому

    What can you tell about the cap you replaced. I mean, according to the multimeter it was ok, but then you replaced it and the console’s problem fixed.

    • @Tecnolock
      @Tecnolock  3 роки тому

      The meter was reading 2.5nf when the rating should have been 2200uf. At the time, the VOM was all I had, but you could have also used a ESR or leakage tested to see the various states the cap could have been in. These days, I typically just re-cap the board on any restoration I do, as it's not uncommon for these electrolytic to start going bad after 30+ years. Thanks for watching.

    Greetings friend, my NES presents the failure in which the screen is gray but not turned on video, she worked perfectly until that gray screen came out, What is the fault and what are the possible solutions?

    • @Tecnolock
      @Tecnolock  5 років тому

      The solid grey screen is exactly what you should get if the games won't boot/no game inserted. It has to be in the connection between the cart and chips. I would recommend trying to clean the 72-pin or replacing it. I've personally had luck soaking the 72-pin connector in white vinegar for 20 or 30 min then dunking it in a baking soda/water mixture to neutralize the acid. Then give it a good cleaning with a NES cleaner. Thanks for watching.

    Very interesting video, my problem is using AV cable the video jumps around, I know it's not the cable, because my other NES works fine.

    so with these systems at 35 years old, why wouldnt you replace ALL the caps instead of just the one? Even if they are working, its just a matter of moments before another one lets go.

    • @Tecnolock
      @Tecnolock  Рік тому

      Honestly, replacing all the electrolytic capacitors is not a bad idea, but age alone does not indicate eminent failure. Testing ESR and leakage will give you a more detailed condition. This is one of my early videos, before I had better diagnostics tools and I just used what I had on hand at the time. Thank you for watching.

    Hello there, awesome video!
    Could you help me out? My NES has a clear image the only problem is that it bounces. It's like if the image moved to the top of the tv and then came back on the bottom. Any idea what it could be?

      @@thecatdaddy1974 I just cleaned real good the inside of where you put the games and that seemed to work, but I don't know if it is a permanent thing. You should try it, I did it with a cotton swab.

    Under load, I get no voltage. About 14 with power off. I ruined the power by reflowing some stuff while I was changing caps.. any idea? Did I short something ya think?

    • @Tecnolock
      @Tecnolock  3 місяці тому

      Go through all the components you installed and make sure that they are installed correctly according to their polarity and then inspect the surrounding area carefully and make sure that no solder globs are touching anything. Let me know how it goes.

    • @greghillmusic
      @greghillmusic 3 місяці тому

      I ordered a cap tester, but like you, i had issues with that bottom hole for the big cap. I think theres bad connection there on the board now, should i jump that?@Tecnolock

    • @greghillmusic
      @greghillmusic 3 місяці тому

      The cap closest to that pin you test in this vid, I may have those two points touching. Gonna redo that now and check again.

    • @greghillmusic
      @greghillmusic 3 місяці тому

      After fixing those two points, I got power back. Still white screen for video output, though. I was careful to install correctly as far as polarity, grey stripe negative... I'll be able to test better tomorrow when my cap tester arrives. I ordered extra big caps too.

    On my NES I have video out BUT I have to wiggle the rca cable in a certain position to make it stay on. Is that the RCA jack or solder problem? Thanks

    • @Tecnolock
      @Tecnolock  3 роки тому

      From your description, it sounds like the RCA jacks have cold solder joints. About 6 min into this video, I pull off the metal shielding on the RF/RCA output of the board. I would try re-soldering the RCA pins there and see if it makes any improvements. Thank you for watching.

    Excellent job and clear explanations, and stumbled on this looking for a lead on my problem: my nes was giving me the blinking white screen and like other repairs, this was cured by a good cleaning.. except when I came to test it, I realized the tv didn't even receive any signal AT ALL.. which means the repair went from bad to worse!
    What do you think its possibly causing this?
    I see a red light, so there's power, but zero signal on the tv, not even any noise for a allot second when you turn an Nes on.
    How would you go about this?

    • @Tecnolock
      @Tecnolock  6 років тому

      I would try testing or replacing the main capacitor, replacing the 72 pin and inspecting or any damaged components. The nice thing about these old system is there simple construction. A lot of times I can find the issue by just swapping in and out parts and seeing what direction the results lead me. Sorry for the late reply. Have not been on in a while. Good luck restoring your system.

    Sweet video! I have an issue with mine where the video gets kind of choppy or bouncy and it make a weird clipping noise through the TV. Any ideas?

    • @Tecnolock
      @Tecnolock  2 роки тому

      My first go to is always connections and caps. Start with cleaning the 72-pin connector, I soak mine in white vinegar for an hour or so and dip them in a baking soda water mixture. Then recap the board. console5 makes a cheap kit (console5.com/store/nintendo-nes-frontloader-cap-kit-nes-001.html). If your still having an issue try narrowing it down a bit by comparing the RF vs RCA outputs. Good luck, thanks for watching!

      My advice is to start at connections and caps. Start with cleaning the 72-pin connector, I soak mine in white vinegar for an hour or so and dip them in a baking soda water mixture. Could be a bad connection with the security chip. Good luck, thanks for watching!
