  • Join me as I harvest our onion crop for the year, and see how well our different varieties have done! This season, we grew three types: Exhibition, which produced some impressively huge onions; Ailsa Craig, a reliable all-rounder; and Sturon, which performed beautifully as well.
In this video, I’ll take you through the process of pulling them from the ground, weighing the harvest, and sharing insights on how each variety thrived in our smallholding. It’s been a great season for onions-watch along to see the results!

Flippin' heck Tracy 😮 I'll be really interested to hear how the exhibition onions taste. I think you've achieved your plan to be self difficult in onions 😊.
Our roscoff onions grown from seed have done really well this year. Have fun x

Absolutely amazing crop and those exhibition ones were literally an eyewatering size 😂 It must feel good to get them all in and stored for winter. My OW onions came out of the ground similar time to my normal onions and were huge like yours. I’ve sown and bought some OW senshyu onions this year to compare as my sown ones were so good.

Incredible crop! Be super interested to see which store the best. (PS - I’ve changed our UA-cam handle again to reflect the name of our new house but this is Emma). We are in and full of plans (and still wading through boxes!) First outside job is to get some beds in for garlic and onions so this is a great vid to inspire us to get cracking ♥️

@@OurSmallholdingAdventure I’m toying with the idea of doing some vids - I’d really love to as I get so much from watching you and others that it would be nice to help even one other person in the same way. But at the same time we’ve no idea what we are doing and I’m sure I’d make a wally of myself 😂😂 - so far I’ve been posting a bit on Instagram - on our Otterwood Cottage account. Need to convince myself to be brave and do some videos 🥰

Its nice to see huge onions but what do you use the most? My family prefers medium-sized onions so that it would be hard to find a use for that "Exhibition" onion you showed. Obviously, the main point when you're growing onions for your own use is: how do they taste and how do they store? I know you have a freeze drier so storage may not be such a big issue.
I've grown "Sturon" from sets before and been disappointed. Too many bolted. It would be interesting to see how you get on growing them from seed though. "Ailsa Craig" is probably my favourite onion. I don't want to cause an argument but, for me, it's got everything! I've never grown "Exhibition" so, if they taste/store well, I might be tempted to give them a try. I'm growing "snowball", "Radar", "Senshyu" and a red onion (I can't remember the name of) from set. These are already planted - started in Containerwise 28 cell modules about a month ago then planted out between all the deluges of rain we've been having. I have "Red Baron", "Noth Holland Blood Red" , "Lilia" and "White Lisbon" seeds. Something tells me I may have gone a bit bonkers when ordering onions ;-) It's too easy to buy the seed/sets when you're browsing through the websites without any plan on where you're going to put them all!
You mentioned potatoes - well, my "Charlotte" did ok. The "International Kidney" and the "Sarpo Mira" were both disappointing. I blame the compost. It's becoming very difficult to get decent compost without spending a fortune. You are definitely on the right track in making your own. I have chickens/quail (the quail produce a huge amount of "fertiliser" for such a small bird) but I don't have the space for large ruminants.

Hi! Not sure why you would cause an argument - not from us :) In answer to your question, the next 12 months will tell. What I do hope to find helpful for the large ones is just peeling once, then chopping and storing in the fridge to use as and when all week. Taste and storage will come. If they are good then I like the idea of 3 times the onion in the same growing space. I don't have a freeze drier. All onions will be kept as they are and if they start to turn, frozen or dehydrated (maybe thats's what you're thinking on the freeze drier?) Sorry to hear your Sturon bolted. I tried snowball and didn't get away with them but alot of that could be weather. I need to get mine in soon, time is running away but the weather is dry today (after the floods of yesterday). Nothing wrong with going bonkers over onions haha. Best of luck and thanks for your comment. Take care!

Hi, I have just found your channel, it it very helpful. Have you made a video about the knives you use for butchery? Would you consider holding workshops or training? I'm about to start on my own homesteading adventure. These things would be useful. Thanks😊

Hi! So good to have another person here. No video as such but a few folks have asked so hopefully will get to filming something soon. When we looked in to workshops the insurance and paperwork was a bit bonkers plus the reality is you’d need half a pig or whatever per person so what would we do with that after etc. all doable but maybe once we don’t work full time too. We would love to do it though! Happy to help if you DM us on instagram if there’s any advice we could offer :)
