    Very ironic you guys are staying in this fancy ass hotel and booking first class in the train but worried about how expensive the food is going to be. You clearly have more than enough money if you can afford a hotel like that. You should have noticed how incredibly expensive Switzerland is as soon as you booked the hotel

      Why would you criticize someone for the hotel they stayed in? Weird. They weren't complaining about things being expensive, just stating a fact. Good move buying groceries in Germany ahead of time to save some bucks.

      To be fair, they are travelling on Eurorail (the Interrail version for non-Europeans), first class with this pass isn't all that expensive.

    "Swiss language is a bit difficult to read"...uhm, you do realize that 1) there is no such thing as "Swiss language" and 2) if you're in Zurich, things are just written in German?? Like the same German you saw in Germany? We just speak differently than in Germany?? Sorry but that just made me laugh...

      McDonald's is no eatery. It is a piece of modern anti-culture. If you don't want to spend lots of money there is a host of opportunities to get good food for very little dough. Just try the next butcher shop in Germany. Most of them have assorted little meals which are of infinitely better quality than the Mac junk.

      Joni Giuro is it about the same as US where they pay min $10/hour? That's min. Avg cost to rent is $1500 Monthly but the lowest in California would be $600 in bad areas. Curious to know

    • @emergencyDuck
      @emergencyDuck 8 років тому +11

      Thanks for the answer pisces person. We don't have a minimum wage by law, but I know a burger king employee (which I guess is one of the lowest) in the worst paying part of the country gets around $18/hour, that would be $2880/month. Rent is pretty much the same, average $1500/month but you can find something for $600 (it's more a question of how many people you live with because the "bad areas" in Switzerland aren't that bad, mostly just ugly). I hope this answers your question. EDIT: I forgot to mention that in Switzerland we usually get paid one extra month on december (it's like we have 13 months in a year), but that usually goes out for taxes which are about one month salary.

    • @jurivlk5433
      @jurivlk5433 8 років тому +8

      Don't forget the chf 600.- of taxes you have to pay and the chf 700.- of health insurance per person. Adding that a dental restoration can cost you chf 50'000.- or more, SWITZERLAND is far from being the paradise it pretends to be.

    Mixed feelings about this vid - LOL!! Aussies are so cute (I am married to one :D)
    Starting off with you shopping in ALDI in Germany, and commenting on how cheap it is - then you travel in 1st class with SBB (Swiss Rail) and stay in the Schweizerhof hotel (most expensive) in Zurich (the "z" is more of a "ts" sound btw - Just like in High German in Germany) where you point to a tiny hill and call it a "mountain" :D :D :D ... and "Swiss dollars"!?!? ROFL!! (Good thing your mate corrected you on that ...) - and finally you end up in McDonalds (*facepalm*) where you conclude that Switzerland is indeed more expensive than Germany - Well done! ;)
    Here is the thing - Yes, Switzerland prices for just about everything is more costly than in the Euro countries (and just about anywhere else in the world). Reasons for this vary from product to product, but with food it comes down to a couple things. Firstly it has a lot to do with quality. We Swiss are typically very fond of our locally grown produce, which is grown by our beloved farmers who by and large use the very least possible amount of chemicals to grow their crops and the least possible amount of antibiotics etc.. in rearing their cattle and poultry. Swiss produce quality standards are some of the highest in the world, and most Swiss seem happy to pay for it. GMO's are non-existent on farms as well. Secondly there is the general quality of life in Switzerland which has everything to do with salaries. Swiss prices for people coming from Germany who get a German salary is pretty horrible, but for someone with a Swiss salary it's quite manageable.
    So in the case of McDonalds - the reason the food costs what it does is mostly due to the higher quality of ingredients, all or most of which come from local producers, and the healthy salary rates - yes, even for those working at McDonalds.
    Glad you guys liked your visit to Switzerland, but really you haven't even seen a percent of what Switzerland has to offer - so hope you come back again and really get around a bit. ;)

    Switzerland is expensive, but so are most of the salaries here. Taxes in Switzerland are much better than anywhere else in Europe (with the exception of maybe Monaco and Luxembourg). Same goes for VAT in this country - it's Europe's lowest. For anyone outside the country with an income below 50k €, Swiss prices are astronomical. The average Swiss income is 58'000 Swiss Francs (52'000 €). Zürich is the most expensive city in the country, but even there, You can save a ton money if a local is the guide. People working in and around this city earn on average more than in other places.

    I worked in a Swiss grocery store 30 years ago (1988). At that time $1 US would get you 3CHF. So the dollar was really strong. Now the exchange rate is 1:1, ug! Anyway in the break room they had a Coke machine, it cost 1.50CHF for a 1/3l Coke. Now in the US, at the time, you could get 12oz (a bit more than 1/3l) for 25cents. Convert that around and it is 50cents, twice as expensive for a little less product. But here's the thing, the US dime (10cents) is the exact same size and weight as the 1/2CHF. So drop three dimes into the machine and you get a Coke for 30cents instead of 50. Of course I didn't dare do that at work, because they'd figure out pretty quick who was cheating the machine. But it came in handy for pay toilets while out and about. Oh and McDonald's in Zurich is really expensive, you pay for the brand. Go to McCheaper's instead, better food, half the price. Or there used to be a chain called Cindy's. Very tasty burgers, they put coleslaw on it instead of lettuce. I ate Cindy's and Moven Pic 5 days a week for 3 months straight, and lost weight! Probably had more to do with working in the grocery store wrangling trollies and lifting heavy boxes than the burgers though.

      no I'm not from Switzerland. Bern is Switzerland's de facto capital, but that's because there happens to be a lot of federal buildings there. Because it ACTS like the capital, it's considered the capital. However, it's not a capital like there is in other countries, where the capital is set in the constitution. Switzerland law does not mention a capital, and there are federal buildings in other cities. So you can call it a capital because it functions as one, but legally it's not.

    I'm sorry but I come from Switzerland and for us that price for food is pretty normal. Zurich is just a expensive city in Switzerland. There are other citys and cantons that are less expensive. We work for money, so we can afford it and I think it isn't a good thing to buy food in Germany to come to Switzerland. Euros are different to franks that's why it's more or less expensive. In Switzerland we have four languages: swissgerman, french, italian and romansh.
    Sorry if I have offendet you but it's what I think is right.

    Okay, I feel I need to explain something, cause people in the comments are so negative. I don't event know why, because the girl isn't talking bad about our country. But the problem of videos like this, in which somebody i gives reviews about another county than his own is, that you review not only our country, but also our mentality, culture, our way of living and identity. It's the same everywhere you go: people like talking bad about other countries, but they don't like to hear something negative about their own one, because it's our identity we're talking about...
    People in the world need to know that we, Swiss people, everyday we're travelling in other countries, we hear from foreigners that we are rich, money is raining from heaven, that everything is so expensive etc. But what people don't know is, that the biggest part of us is the middle class, which is not rich at all and for the money we have, we work hard every day and we pay a big price: our freedom. Also, yes, the prices are very high, but for that, we get good salaries and the quality of the product is not only good, but perfect.
    So, to all the people bitching around here: there you go. In every country it's different and people need to learn to adapt and to accept the differences in culture and mentality. It's not about being better than another country, there is no better or worse. It's just different, every contry is different and amazing in its own way.

    Ok what's the deal with everything being supposedly so expensive in Switzerland... I know I'm biased and all being from Switzerland, but it's really not that hard to get by on relatively low funds here. You could for example start by not staying in a fancy hotel on Bahnhofstrasse. Getting food from the grocery store and cooking for yourself will save you a ton of money if you have a kitchen of your own. Also, McDonalds is relatively expensive in Switzerland when compared to other restaurants. If you don't have a kitchen or really feel like eating out, there are still a ton of restaurants that operate at very affordable prices, you just have to be prepared to go a bit outside the very center of the city where all the expensive tourist traps are (which isn't that much effort since zurich, despite it being a very cosmopolitan city imo isn't actually very large, so you can get to cheaper areas through a 10-15 min tram ride).
