Instead of setting an alarm on your phone, you could get a "real" alarm clock. I use a light alarm clock and it honestly changed so much about my mornings. I wake up more peacefully. It starts with a soft light (30 minutes before you set the alarm) that'll go brighter and brighter and then starts with a very nice bird-sound. It kind of pretends to be a sunrise and lets you wake up very naturally. I absolutely love it!
May I ask what brand and how much you paid? This is what I need! I am stuck in a basement apartment that is so dark, all the time. Winters are unbearable. I didn't even realize how bad things were until I moved to a 2nd floor, bright apartment and didn't realize until spring had arrived that I had experienced nearly ZERO winter depression, because I had light all the time! Unfortunately, my life situation has me back here and I cannot leave anytime in the forseable future. But the light alarm clocks I've seen have been just too expensive for me to afford.
my housemates and I call this nighttime routine "nesting", so in the evenings we'll say "I'm off to nest", which is effectively our version of "goodnight". I love thinking of the routine as nesting - a very cozy and supportive energy before bed!
I think it's ok to not have a routine sometimes, you need that time in the day to just relax and not actively think and plan. For me, it is almost as refreshing as sleep itself. What I'm trying to say is you don't need to feel guilty about watching UA-cam or reading a little too long 😊
loved the video BUT skin care is NOT a placebo effect haha. i'm a bit of a skincare enthusiast and just think of it in the same way that you'd put good food into your body. from the very small clips i can tell you've kind of got an idea as to what products do what but i'd do a bit more research into what the products you're using are doing. of course it probably is a placebo effect in terms of a night time routine and making you feel sleepy but in the same way having a shower, or reading before bed is. your skin is the biggest organ in your body, so take care of it with intention!
yes 100%!! I know some people have very good skin and can "get away with" not using any skin care products, Ruby has quite good skin herself. but I, for one, have very troublesome skin. if I skip just one night, I can see the effects in the morning. and it can take a couple of days, sometimes even a week (if I break out) to get my skin back where it was
Ruby--I found the few years after university exhausting. Starting a new job, particularly an active one with students, requires rest and grace. I am a literature teacher who graduated university almost 20 years ago. I am still really tired during certain seasons of my life; reassessing my routine is essential. I love routines, and your routine looks a lot like mine! Hope it all works out.
There’s something oddly comforting about hearing that experiences (like needing resets in different seasons) continues throughout life. I’m a couple years out of undergrad. Even though it’s frustrating to imagine that this rhythm of resetting and losing routine never ends, it’s also nice to know that “real” adults are still figuring things out. There’s no deadline to finding ways of organizing and appreciating life!
Dear Ruby, I wanted to take a moment to express how much I enjoy your UA-cam videos. As soon as I see a new upload from you, I feel a sense of excitement and joy knowing that I'll have something to look forward to during my study breaks. Your calm and serene demeanor is incredibly soothing and helps me to unwind and relax. I just wanted to let you know that your content is truly appreciated and that you are making a positive impact on the lives of your viewers. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to continuing to watch and support your channel.
The smell of skincare products and bed linens make such a difference. It's wild how well certain smells shift our brains into wake up or wind down mode. Because I only use rose face cream at night, my brain has learned to slow down the moment I open the jar. Scent association is so fascinating!
Ruby ❤ I've been feeling a bit out of track lately and I've been playing video games right before sleeping, which I usually don't do. But I think it's not a bad thing to recognize we are not doing the things we believe are the best for us and let ourselves do it for some time. Then, we find the right moment to get back on track. It's always okay! Have a good week everyone!
I love how real and candid this all felt, especially the clip at the end about turning off the light hahaha, it’s really helpful just to see some normality and feel like we’re all in the same boat sometimes! I’m actually trying to do the exact same thing right now and get my night routine back on track as I’d really love to start waking up earlier in the mornings. Best of luck with your routine Ruby!
I’ve also been revamping my night routine. It’s been rather stressful at time but I’m being intentional with cleaning my room up before bed, tea, reading and avoiding my phone at least thirty minutes before bed. It’s been helpful!
You're literally such an inspiration I used to watch from your beginnings and I love seeing how much you did evolve. Sending so much love from morocco.
No, because I actually love this, it is so real and down to earth. But also so inspirational, I've actually been in the same crappy routine, and this is exactly what I needed, to bring me back. Much appreciated
this video came at the perfect time for me! i've been struggling to fix my sleeping pattern, ending up staying up until 2am every night and then being exhausted the next day. so comforting to see someone else finding it an issue and coming up with ways to fix it! i'm definitely going to implement a couple things from your routine!
I just uploaded my own night routine video and notice that we have similar ideas of what our ideal night routines should look like. 😊But I agree that we can quickly neglect this routine due to exhaustion etc. even though it is so beneficial. So it's often good to be reminded to take care of ourselves after a long day of work 💕
I’ve also been trying to reset my night/morning routine. I’ve been working earlier shift for the past while and it always messes up my sleep schedule. I’m proud of you for finding something that’s working well. ❤
this resonates so much with me! I feel like I’ve been through my routine enough and it’s time for a change. One can get so bored that days seem to mush together! Thanks for inspiring me Ruby!
Well you and I are two sides of the same coin, my exams are due and I was literally in panic mode : I too am struggling with routines lately and then your video appears out of the blue and lends me a guiding hand. Thank you 😊
Oh my! I'm also currently struggling with bad night routine. Very bad that I usually sleep at 2-3am and wake up at 8-9 am super groggy and exhausted. It's the gadget, really. It's what makes me pull an all-nighter just for some useless entertainment that isn't beneficial to me. And now, seeing this video and realizing that even Ruby is struggling with it to motivated me to get out of this trance and put my life together. Thanks for being genuine, Ruby😊. God bless
It's nice to know someone else is feeling out of sorts with routines lately. I agree it's so important and I feel that way about an AM routine too. I definitely need to start small so it was nice to see you simplifying things as well. Sometimes we just need to take those steps back. Also, I recently downloaded your digital planner and I LOVE it so much.
hi ruby i love your videos and i only just discovered them a few weeks ago. the only thing is it’s not necessarily “bad” that you don’t do all these things before going to bed because lots of people just go to sleep after a long day. it’s quite unrealistic to say that every night you do this and you never slip up sometimes
Dear Ruby, I really understand the struggles you’re going through in the last couple of months. I know how sleep cycle is so important for us and if it is broken down then we start “blaming” ourselves for not keeping up with the expectations we have set for ourselves. When we are children our environment and life setting don’t change much so we don’t notice any particular changes in our sleep/wake up routines. However, as an adult suddenly our life shifts all the time if it is for moving into new house, new relationship, new work, university etc. everything is in constant change and for every change there is a different time period of adapting. You have graduated just now and it is a huge change you have gone through, and it will take for your mind to readjust itself, but eventually it will and you will notice how all your patterns will return to normal. Don’t try and force anything on yourself because it only puts your body and mind out of equilibrium. The time will heal everything. This is a small advice from a small person who is approx your age and is also going through a huge change in her life and everything has changed, but I am recovering now :)
I really needed this! I've been struggling to go to sleep any earlier than midnight every night and I have to get up at 6am for work! 6 hours of sleep is not enough for me and I spend my days in a haze but I still can't get into the habit of going to sleep earlier. I think I might try to go to sleep 10 minutes earlier every night and hopefully over time I'll get to sleep earlier and earlier. I'd even be happy with going to sleep by 11pm!
Fantastic video, Ruby! I love it. Great job! ... You know, my night routine has to change as well! I was a morning person and now I stay up till 4 am every day. It's 1 am here already! I created my own new night routine. It's simple, but I can't do it. At least not now. It's addictive to watch your videos at 1 am, you know!
I had bad night sleeps, I was adviced to turn my phone of an hour before I go to bed, buy an alarm clock and have a tech free hour before I go to bed, this has helped me. I go to bed at 9pm and wake up at 5am.
Really liked you watching working from home and setting your life in home... Bcz not everyone lives away from home or have 9 to 5 job... But we working from home people also need to set our lives ... So in this case your videos are perfect one . Really love to see these ...
Thank you so much Ruby. I´ve been following your routine because like you I used to have a bad night routine and always had trouble sleeping. This change of routine has helped me a lot getting a good night sleep. You´re so inspirational.
Ruby, this video couldn't have come at a better time. As a new years resolution, I wanted to organize my life better which worked in some areas so far, but in the process I somehow forgot to follow my night routine. At the moment, my night routine looks like this: -Realizing it's half past midnight and that I have been scrolling on tiktok for the last few hours -realizing I have to sleep now -panicking I even neglected my skin care routine which was part of my night routine, even though I was so happy about having good skin because of my night routine. I wanted to tackle my night routine for a few days now, because I have ADHD and I know that my symptoms are worse when I don't get enough sleep, and now I'm finally gonna do it. But seeing that even you, who I've always looked up to as a "role model" when it comes to organisation and having your life together, struggles at times with routines is so important. It shows that nobody's perfect and everyone, even the most organized person in the world, struggles at times. Thanks for sharing this!
Ive had chronic insomnia my entire life and ive recently been trying make a set routine. the earliest i can get to bed is around 12:30 which is better than the early hours of the morning but still not great🥴. This video is so encouraging tho. ❤
I've unintentionally done a lot of good fixing my night routine lately - my bearded dragon's lights were mucked up, so I needed to start getting up with the sun to wake her up and get her set up with a hot water bottle and some warm blankets. I started going to bed not long after settling her in for the night at sunset - and here I am now, well after sorting her lights, sticking to it and sleeping/feeling a ton better in general. Silver linings and all that. 🙃
Great video!!! Btw, I noticed that the faucets/taps in your home have a lot of green lime scale. What helps is pure citric acid (you could use a lemon but a specific cleaner is more effective imo, don't worry - it's environmentally friendly!) or steel wool (the latter can often scratch your surfaces, so be careful with that!). You can pour some of that citric acid into a clear bag and tie it securely with a rubber band to the tap head (make sure that the tap head is soaked with citric acid!). Leave it overnight and it's good as new! If there are still some remnants of lime scale, try to scour it with steel wool or a scouring pad. Voilà! (the tip is from Aurikatariina btw, she has her own yt channel) Greetings from Germany :)
Lavender pillow sprays have been proven to be little more than a placebo - they're already very weak and the spray mist simply dilutes them further. If you really want to experience the beneficial effects of lavender on sleep, get a good quality pure essential oil and warm it in your room (either in a small dish on the radiator or in an oil burner) throughout the whole evening before you get into bed. Lavender has a cumulative effect so will be more effective after a couple of weeks. 🙂 Also, in terms of sleep hygiene, baths are recommended in the evening as they are more relaxing than showers (which are better for waking you up in the morning!). I struggled with chronic insomnia for years, but lavender oil and baths in the evening worked wonders.
I really needed this. I always feel I have to get a certain amount of things done before I can go to bed. I end up going to bed most nights without even washing my face or brushing my teeth let alone taking my meds. I'm going to make a checklist to start using at a set time.
Ruby 🌷I am at an unstable moment in my life, so your routines have been a great help to me. I wanted to ask you if you could make a 24h video reading or writing, I think it would inspire us all. Or a livestream, that would be great! I miss them. Thank you!
I love this video Ruby! I think the vulnerablity from someone I have really admired for a long time is beauitful and so helpful. I am heading back to uni next week and you have inspired me to get back into good night habbits too. Sending love from New Zealand!
You can set alarms, the amount of sleep you want to get as well as the focus (sleep, blocks notifications and optionally darkens the screen) in the clock application by setting up the sleep times on every weekday. I set up the sleep times on my phone and use my smartwatch to get woken up as it gently vibrates on my wrist; it also collects data during sleep, which is helpful if I had bad nights. I think you should also not shut down your iMac as shutting it down and turning it on daily causes it to perform tests in order to make sure the hardware is functioning properly, which unnecessarily taxes the system each time. There's a recent video about it by Proper Honest Tech on UA-cam. 🙂
The New Economics Foundation gives these 5 things to promote well being. Let's see how you stack up, Ruby. 1) connecting to the people around us (check, your thoughtful gift-giving, meeting friends in London, being with your family -- and your dog!); 2) being active in our bodies (check, your walks, trips to London, to the US, and surfing with your Dad!); 3) taking notice of the living world (check, your walks in the woods, your garden, appreciating nature abroad, etc.); 4) learning new skills (check, your book publishing, your writing, learning internet software, improving your videography, your college education and degree!); 5) giving to others (check, your amazing youtube channel which is the ultimate gift!). Guess what Ruby? You get a big 5 out of 5. We need more like you!
Sorry if this sounds strange; but the shower in your house is amazing! It’s so cool that you have that huge walk in shower. Not sure if those are common in the UK, but almost every bathroom I’ve ever had here in America has always had a very small shower where one shoulder is touching the wall and the other is touching the shower curtain at all times basically. So every time you show that shower in your routine videos I admire it so much. Sorry if that’s weird. 😅
Thank you for sharing this journey with us Ruby! And I am so thankful because this came just in time. I have also been struggling to stick to both my morning and night routines after trialing them out and experienced a short period of success. This video is such a great motivation!
I just recently developed a new night routine for myself with the help of my therapist and we worked backward to figure it out-starting with what time I need to be up and subtracting 8 hours from that for sleep time, an hour from that for no screens, six hours from that for no more caffeine, etc. It really works for me! I recommend this method to develop a base routine :)
I hope you find something that "sticks" for you. Bad habits are so hard to break! I never used to have my phone near me at night. But with the family health situation of the past several years, I had no choice. I had to be instantly reachable 24/7. Now I've gotten in the worse habit of watching/listening to UA-cam before sleep. And even getting on when I first wake up. Again, I NEVER used to do this. But now that's become a habit, I am finding it so difficult to break.
I’m always interested in peoples night routines because mainly because I am trying to get a better night routine which will help with my mental health that I suffer badly with and every night routine I have looked at have all basically been the same as what you have just shown but I’ve often wondered whether you and others stick to the same routine each night or if it’s just to do a UA-cam video. Most of the videos I have watch people don’t show them sitting down and watching a bit of TV etc. Sadly I don’t work due to my mental health so my night routine would be slightly different and at the moment my routine is sit down and watch a little bit of TV, get the dinner on, have my dinner whilst watching TV, let the dog out, if I feel like it do the dishes, watch some more TV, get quickly ready for bed around 10:30 pm, take my medication which is a lot, make myself a drink and have that in bed. Well that’s watching some UA-cam with the screen turn to orange and not the bright blue screen, because like you said, the blue screen is not good for sleeping. Then I just hope that I can get to sleep because I sometimes have trouble sleeping.
This video has come at the perfect time for me, i found your starting point very relatable and your process very motivating. I've just had no routine at all over the past semester in any area of my life and this just motivates me to work on my routines now that exams are almost over. And just an aside, I loved your editing on this video!!! The b roll incorporation and little title cards look so good!
Babel changed my life. I had never felt so seen. I devoured that book. Especially as a female of colour working in a very white-male occupation that is meant to "serve queen and country", and who went to a gothic, secluded university on a peninsula, I felt like R.F. Kuang looked into my soul and wrote my experiences on a page. There were some parts/conversations in the book that were so accurate and that mirrored my real life experiences so well that I felt like she had spied on my life and the wrote a book about it. At least the beginning part. Anyways, I hope you enjoy the book Ruby. I have never been so excited for someone to read a book. Can't wait to hear your opinion on it in a future video!
Hi ruby its very true night routine really influences our morning. Will you post a detailed video about your current weekened routinr and the excercises and meditation you do in detail .
You've really inspired me to create a dedicated evening routine to follow. At the moment, it's all over the place, but I like the fact you created a checklist for it as it really makes you stick to it. I will give it a go! Maybe I'll document it on my channel :D
Hi Ruby! I loved your video! I am an avid Notion user, and was wondering if you could do a review of the Notion update with their new A.I. feature! Thanks
Wow, what a nice big shower you have. I would be tempted to go to sleep in there. My routine is actually similar to this but I also try to have a snack and pet my cat while she purrs. Very relaxing.
About blue light from screens, there is an option to have night shift from any time you want on mac and iphone and choose the warmest end of the spectrum. Of course we should limit screens and especially social media consumption as much as possible before sleep, but at least we don't irritate our eyes as much during the evening and the darker times of autumn/winter with this option.
This made me think about my own night routine because even though its not too bad I do have nights still when I am bringing my phone into my room and looking at it right before bed which is something I'm trying to stop. I really enjoyed this and it made me think about how to simplify my night routine a bit too :)
Sometimes routines are no match for the complexity of life 🥲 Maybe the right approach is to have two or three different routines depending on how your day went, how you feel, your schedule etc
Life changes, subtly and imperceptibly perhaps, but definitely and measurably. Routines that worked once may not remain entirely suitable (or at all suitable), especially if we find ourselves in a new phase of life, new place, new employment. It's worth finding what works and trying it for a time. You're right to set cut off points for such things as screen time; it is also worth exploring things to try and foster sleep - herbal teas and tinctures, scents, and white noise are among things that can be effective.
this might be random but in the clip at 10.31, half of your hair is tucked behind you so it looks like it is shoulder length. That length really suits you! It caught my attention and I was like WOW :) Other than that random opinion, brilliant video!!!

I had bad night sleeps, I was adviced to turn my phone of an hour before I go to bed, buy an alarm clock and have a tech free hour before I go to bed, this has helped me. I go to bed at 9pm and wake up at 5am.
I’ve been watching your videos for years and I dont know why but you look much more mature in terms of personality and behavior. Love it somehow. ❤
At the moment, my night routine looks like this:
-Realizing it's half past midnight and that I have been scrolling on tiktok for the last few hours
-realizing I have to sleep now
-panicking
I even neglected my skin care routine which was part of my night routine, even though I was so happy about having good skin because of my night routine.
My morning routine goes much smoothly then my night routine. Thanks for the inspiration Ruby!
Ive had chronic insomnia my entire life and ive recently been trying make a set routine. the earliest i can get to bed is around 12:30 which is better than the early hours of the morning but still not great🥴. This video is so encouraging tho. ❤
How did you manage that?! The earliest I get is 2am
Same with me Ruby! Grateful you are talking about this and I am trying to keep having a chill morning and night routine that benefits me.
Voilà!
(the tip is from Aurikatariina btw, she has her own yt channel)
Greetings from Germany :)
Watching your videos is literally healing me.
that bathroom/shower looks INCREDIBLE?
I love the snappy editing on this video!
10:15 this made me instantly go to my clock app and eliminate all the useless alarms so I only have the few needed repeating
I also have been having a hard time keeping with my night routine.
The alarm clock til is great. Thank you!
I like watching your videos it makes me happy ❤
this was what I need, thank youu and love youu
I really needed this. I always feel I have to get a certain amount of things done before I can go to bed. I end up going to bed most nights without even washing my face or brushing my teeth let alone taking my meds. I'm going to make a checklist to start using at a set time.
Good idea including going to sleep time into daily schedule.
This influencer has a great sense of humor and always knows how to make me laugh, which is why I keep coming back for more.
honestly, you seem so much happier ruby
your bathroom looks amazing !!!! the shower especially ! and snow fairy is amazing am I right its phenomenal !!!!
The ending feels just like the postcredit marvel scenes 🤣 love it! Just me writing this at 03:16 is like that meme.
You can also use black and white mode in iphone and ipad .. it helps✌️😃
We need more like you!
>be me
>watching videos about night routines at 6am after all nighter of reading
>work in one hour
Sorry if this sounds strange; but the shower in your house is amazing! It’s so cool that you have that huge walk in shower. Not sure if those are common in the UK, but almost every bathroom I’ve ever had here in America has always had a very small shower where one shoulder is touching the wall and the other is touching the shower curtain at all times basically. So every time you show that shower in your routine videos I admire it so much. Sorry if that’s weird. 😅
It's not common here! ,I think Ruby has a lovely home.
Hope youre feeling better mentally Ruby! the version of the bad routine is my routine aha so I must change something
I’m living the very same and have to recreate my night routine to have better night sleep. Thank you for the videooo 💙✨
This was literally so helpful. Thank you.
I do cover my computer too! It just signals my brain that work and studying is over and I can now focus on other things.
Oh my gosh I relate to this so much!! Thank you for being honest & realistic and posting this, it's a huge help❤
This 5 year journal I want.
Maybe I'll document it on my channel :D
i love your night time routine ruby. it is important to brush your teeth
Hi Ruby! I loved your video! I am an avid Notion user, and was wondering if you could do a review of the Notion update with their new A.I. feature! Thanks
love how your reading babel the same time as me !!!
Wow, what a nice big shower you have. I would be tempted to go to sleep in there. My routine is actually similar to this but I also try to have a snack and pet my cat while she purrs. Very relaxing.
I m just addicted to your vlogs🥺 ... love from India ❤️🤗
I think the skin care thing is mostly placebo too, although that said, my face stings after washing if I don't use a moisturiser.
I write relaxing piano music (if that might help people unwind in the evening!)
I struggle at times to get to sleep so I get what you mean
About blue light from screens, there is an option to have night shift from any time you want on mac and iphone and choose the warmest end of the spectrum. Of course we should limit screens and especially social media consumption as much as possible before sleep, but at least we don't irritate our eyes as much during the evening and the darker times of autumn/winter with this option.
I love your idea to make playlist for evening routine! I need to do the same. Thank you for advice ❤
This made me think about my own night routine because even though its not too bad I do have nights still when I am bringing my phone into my room and looking at it right before bed which is something I'm trying to stop. I really enjoyed this and it made me think about how to simplify my night routine a bit too :)
Some good practical ideas, thanks
REN beauty is the best, I use that serum too !
Loved this video so much!
I envy your house and garden !
Sometimes routines are no match for the complexity of life 🥲 Maybe the right approach is to have two or three different routines depending on how your day went, how you feel, your schedule etc
That’s a really good idea actually x
I like this idea 💡
I really loved the video it gave me motivation to do productive night routine
Love the new plan!
Coffee could be culprit. 👀
Potentially it could be borrowing energy for the rest of the day.
Love love love this format ! Great video
I really enjoyed this video! Thank you for inspiring but in a realistic way ❤
Life changes, subtly and imperceptibly perhaps, but definitely and measurably. Routines that worked once may not remain
entirely suitable (or at all suitable), especially if we find ourselves in a new phase of life, new place, new employment. It's worth finding what works and trying it for a time. You're right to set cut off points for such things as screen time; it is also worth exploring things to try and foster sleep - herbal teas and tinctures, scents, and white noise are among things that can be effective.
Thank you for the reminder to change my own routine 😄
this might be random but in the clip at 10.31, half of your hair is tucked behind you so it looks like it is shoulder length. That length really suits you! It caught my attention and I was like WOW :) Other than that random opinion, brilliant video!!!
Never have I found a video more relatable
