Glad I found this . I’ve been listening to more grindcore/power violence recently, as although for over 3 decades, I preferred punk , I don’t consider pop punk to be punk and am past point of finding any humor in watching bands who released amazing music in the 80s or 90s that play set lists older then most of audience , cos they know quite well no one came to hear anything they’ve put out in last 5-10 years . I cannot honestly claim to know lyrics to , let’s say. 75% of grind or power violence, but…….. the lyrics I’ve seen printed or do understand are on many occasions more political then a lot of current punk. This isn’t the maximum rock n roll letters column , so although there won’t be 20 verbose diatribes loaded with vitriolic polemic of the most acerbic variety about a few topics I touched upon, if anyone is bored enough to read my entire post( I have insomnia and it’s amazing , but posting opinions online works better then ambien and has no “ interesting “ side effects . But that’s my excuse for writing this . What’s your excuse for reading this ? ) then I will not discount your response even if it’s 20 pages telling me I’m a self aggrandizing asshole who should STFU about 80s/90s punk versus what punk is currently .

"punk" culture has been a larp for decades now. it's performative poverty in most places, college age kids with middle class or even wealthy parents deciding to go live like bums for a while and pretend to care about people who are actually poor, because poverty is fun when you can turn it on and off at will. for this reason, i do have a somewhat begrudging respect for pop punk, because it drops all pretense of being authentically crusty or impoverished or truly outraged and embraces the real cultural undercurrent of modern "punk" - bitchy rich kid larper angst.
all that said, i love the sound of this style of punk. but the "culture" is dead and skeletal, if it even existed in the first place, given the familial and political connections of a lot of early "punks". industry plants aren't a new thing, after all.

Actually I agree with you don’t get me wrong I’m a fan of the offspring have been for years but I’ve always been into punk in its most extreme forms starting with hardcore punk then onto grindcore thrashcore powerviolence and crust punk those are the genres Iove. whats cool is even when older bands put out new albums it still sounds brutal maybe more so then some of there older stuff but you can’t deny there’s something about the older sounding albums that’s just so brutal raw and insane that the new albums don’t quite capture but come very close. Don’t let people tell you what to listen to if you like your powerviolence awsome
