The crosswalk man is a specifically Eastern German thing. It is so popular that they actually standardized most of the traffic lights in formerly West Berlin to be in that style too, one of the few examples of an East German symbol replacing Western ones after reunification but you wouldnt expect to see those signs in say Munich or Hanover

You can see some even here in Baden-Württemberg, though the majority are still in the old West German style. Both are allowed AFAIK. Some cities will also have their own figures representing specific characters from that city. Not everywhere though I think, just for some spots.

Having so many objects to reflect on places you've been and different points in your life you were in when you got them is a really fun way to learn about someone and their past. And I'm a sucker for stories like that. And thanks for continuing to make IMO the best culture related content on UA-cam.

Aaah, I got a quick tidbit about the Christ child cake! I know you said that you got it in Mexico, but we have a very similar tradition in New Orleans. Every year during Mardi Gras (which typically happens in March), we make these things called King Cakes. They’re these really tasty cakes that are decorated with white, purple, green, and gold icing/sprinkles. They taste kinda like cinnamon rolls, and they do, of course, have the Christ child hidden inside of them. It’s meant to represent the wisemen finding Jesus (hence the name KING cake). Whoever gets the slice with the baby inside of it is said to have good luck!

    • @potentialcaroozin2385
      @potentialcaroozin2385 Рік тому +14

Apparently king cake is very common in many places that follow catholicism! I was introduced to it by my Mexican neighbor, and she told me that for them, whoever got baby Jesus or and angel had to make the tamales next year lol. But watching French cartoons with my little sister (miraculous lady bug) they mentioned king cake as well, it’s rosquilla in Mexico. Obviously it varies a bit but most tend to include fruits and jelly like stuff in it, like a sweet pound cake. I’m not surprised it’s a thing in New Orleans considering France’s occupation.

In Spain it’s called “Roscón de Reyes” and it is eaten during “Reyes” witch is on the 6th of January and it’s basically like a second Christmas. In Spain it usually has one of the 3 kings (The wise men) and a non-edible bean. If you get the bean you have to pay for the hole thing and if you get the king you get good luck, and depending on the family tradition, you get some money.

    • @marblemunkey

I had a great aunt from New Orleans and was familiar with King Cake from her. Can confirm they're associated with Mardi Gras (and hence Easter).
My wife runs a campus ministry group, and for a number of years we'd have a joint Fat Tuesday pancake dinner with several other denominations. We also had a King Cake, and whoever found the baby Jesus, their denomination was responsible for procuring a King Cake next year.

Fun fact: the Japanese new driver symbol 🔰 is often appropriated by car enthusiasts in the US and Canada as a symbol of Japanese Domestic Market cars, as many iconic cars from Japan, particularly ones that were never sold in the North American market. However, many of them don't know what the symbol means (or even that JDM specifically refers to Japanese imported cars).
It's very funny to me how many people put these symbols on their cars not realizing they're inadvertently advertising that they don't know how to drive. It would be like someone in Japan buying an American car and putting an N tag in their window.
Also, the Ukrainian symbol on the crest is called a tryzub, or trident.

If it wasn’t taboo, I would probably even collect a lot of really controversial stuff just because I think it’s interesting how much meaning man has given his objects. The moment I saw “soup for my family” on that little cut out raccoon I knew EXACTLY what this was referencing. In 2020 there was a press conference held where Donald trump said that anarchists were throwing cans of soup at police officers and it was so stupid that it became a meme in antifa culture that we were some soup throwin rascals. so a lot of independent artists made merch off of it bc frankly, it’s hilarious and soup for my family is iconic, thank you for rescuing that long buried meme from my memory

The ending remarks really caught me off guard. As someone who doesn't spend much time in the comment sections usually, nevertheless, I would like to say in regard to your high esteem for your fans and community, that I believe it is a reflection of the openness and respect with which you approach different aspects of living in your videos. We may not come from the same background, or feel similarly about issues of culture or politics, yet, I sense that we would certainly enjoy spending some time in conversation together.
It's easy to draw the conclusion that respect and tolerance are two qualities which are becoming less abundant in the developed western world (or certainly the media of same), and so it's a genuine delight to find a conscientious, intelligent, curious person who is willing to expend so much effort to provide such varied and interesting content. Moving is a very emotional thing for me, and it starts to feel very real when I take down all the things off my walls, pack up all the little items, and de-clutter the shelves and surfaces. I can avoid the emotional turmoil of moving until that point. The blankness of a space that was once very lived-in is difficult for me to contend with. Whenever I move to a new place I scramble to place at least some of my memorabilia around because a new blank space is almost as bad as an old blank space. I can only imagine the weight of the move is resonating with you, as you said that it was rather cathartic going through it all. But it's all for the best! Those emotions are just something you have to push through. Anyway, I really enjoyed hearing the backstory of all these classic items we see in every video! It's such an eclectic collection. I'm particularly glad to hear the backstory to the Anarchist Tom Nook painting, haha. I was always partial to that one.

I just got back from a trip to Japan a couple weeks ago. On our last day we went to Kamakura and saw a bunch of Jizo statues. The tour guide said jizo leads the souls of children who passed away across a river in the underworld to heaven. Also apparently Jizo protects them from oni. It’s kind of a beautiful sentiment. Jizo protects those who can’t protect themselves.

The quirky danish souvenir thingy is actually called a hoptimist because it hops up and down and is very optimistic... Basically... There isn't really a lot to it but having an hoptimist on your table etc while working on something hard and exhausting can be somewhat motivating as you give it a notch and watch it hop up and down all cheery
(But it is very quirky like most things here)
    edit:
I would like to expand a bit
They don't all come in the shape of the danish flag they come in all kinds of sizes, outfits, colours and themes. My dear mother has been working the same place for a long time and she received one in the theme of her workplace (along with some other stuff). I used to work at a place during a holiday season that sells all of those quirky danish things such as the Kay Bojesen monkey and the amount of version I have seen is insane.
and I almost forgot the one J.J has is themed with a clapping hat which is for some reason (I don't know the full origin story) very popular in sports here... Another quirky thing I guess.

Some cultures have words for the objects in your collection "Krimskrams," though I think the english "knick knack" encapsulates this well.
I love the idea of storing and displaying cultural (internet or otherwise) things in such a way. Your UA-cam set is by far my favorite (especially considering your space constraints!) and engrossing to look at; approaching an image out of a I-Spy book. I am taking inspiration from you and @TechnologyConnections when designing my own set. I hope my, mostly internet culture-based, projects can be appreciated in a similar fashion.

I know how hard it is to "clean out" and down-size whether to make room for more or not. Clearly, culture it important to you, and that comes through in all your videos. A British colonial official, Sir Arthur Grimble, whom took up duty in the S.W. Pacific in 1914 said portraits of Victoria were still in the offices. He transferred to the Caribbean in 1933. He wrote a postwar autobiography expressing his affection for Micronesian people with whom he served. U.S. commercials had "Cavity Creeps" in the '70s-'80s. I largely had a somewhat traumatic move, but am mostly resettled. I went on a bottle digging expedition yesterday, finding little, but having fun & exercise. Thanks for explaining that leering face with the centre parted hair. I always wondered about him. He looks like 19th Century contrived cutesiness.

hey J.J the ballot was sent by me (as well with the Hamsa at 1:12:10 that I gave you while you visited in Israel), happy to see you kept them.
the story of the ballot is that i wanted to get you a voting ballot containing both Hebrew and Arabic on it, they are usually seen in Arab/mixed cities so i went on election day to a mixed city to get you one.
it took me a while to find a ballot that contained both so I didn't cared much of which party it is.
the party on is from Israel Beitnu (Israel our home), it considered part of the far right party for the post-soviet immigrants who arrived to Israel after the collapse of the Soviet union.
though they were considered far right they did set in the last coalition of the center-left (that collapsed recently) among with the Islamic party (Raam).
biased on that I'd call them more of a populist party.
would be happy to send you more things for the new, better and grater shelf.

The soup cans are used as projectiles. If one carried in a backpack full of stones to the protest, one could be cited for bringing weapons of some sort. A backpack full of tin cans, on the other hand, can be plausibly explained away as one's groceries 😁

41:53 I'm chilean, and I have to say that I'm impressed as well that you managed to notice the "chancho juanito" as a culturally significant object. It's one of those things that someone from the culture doesn't realize are iconic unless someone else points it out. The story of its origin is unfortunately lost to time, and we only know that they started being manufactured in the 1960's. Nowadays, chileans also associate these piggybanks with the chilean funk rock band "Chancho en Piedra", since their first album featured one on its cover, and they've used it as a mascot ever since. A lot of fans bring these piggybanks to their concerts too.
