    New facility looks great, did you notice that with the gates for all four pens located in the same place the first two groups had to turn back on their normal direction to fill the pen whereas the last two pens flowed through very easily, when you empty the pens the last two pens will flow very easily and the first two pens will have to reverse their direction as they exit the pen, when you are planning the working area mark the laneways and gates on the floor first and then as a group do a walk through to find the easiest stress free route

    • @thedirtygardener
      @thedirtygardener Місяць тому +4

      I noticed that. I think the water troughs are in a place where it forces the cows to change direction. Maybe moving them to the opposite wall would allow for better cow flow.

    Can you do an overview of the new systems? This is obviously vary different from milk cows, so i would love to hear more about the what, whys, and hows of the differences. In general, I would love to get a 5 minute crash course on the uk beef industry.

  • @JDseller1

    You will love the slat floor! The reduction of bedding makes it a lot more labor friendly. Plus a reduction of the manure volume. The only draw back is you need to put larger cattle on them. Small calves will have hoof issues by the time they are finished. We have three slat floor buildings. It greatly reduced the amount of bedding we needed and fewer loads of manure hauled out too. Cattle stay much cleaner too. Brushes or rub mats are a must have item.
    It will be interesting to see how you get your handling system setup.

    The first 2 pens you filled need a extra gate at the shed entrance to allow easy exit or a spare gate at the existing entrance to pull around to create a funnel effect.. I know this as I work in a 55 pen slatted shed and 2 of the pens have the entrance in the wrong corner and cattle run past it

    Experience of intensive beef with similar stocking rates is that you want lots of ventilation to avoid respiratory pproblems. Don't seal it up with galebreaker. Cattle only need to be out of the wind and rain. We took the ridges off to get airflow.

I must admit, it was very hard to NOT look at the feeder! 😂 I suspect the pens are bigger than they look, since you mentioned there were 42 head in one pen, with plenty of room, but I'm wondering how do you keep those floors clean? Cleaning out the leftover/reject feed from the troughs is somewhat labor intensive. So come up with a mechanical solution. Design a welded up shaped ramp thing to go on the loader so you can drive down the alley and the feed slides itself out of the trough. May not get it all but if you get 90% then good enough. Then it can all be scooped up with the bucket same as if you had pitch forked it out of the trough.

    nice looking new shed Tom, i think like you said about the feed trough, you will have to clean out any old feed, the pro's and con's of the different options, i would personally had the feed on the floor / ground.
    not that hard to push up feed vs time to clean out a trough. however if the feed is fresh, clean and eaten / cleaned up by the cattle, then trough cleaning won't be too big a task.

    • @JDseller1
      @JDseller1 Місяць тому

      If you do not over feed then you rarely have to clean out a feed bunk. Floor feeding beef cattle wastes a lot more feed. You get dirt/manure into the feed much more easily.

    Fantastic shed, the stuff of dreams for an Irish beef farmer!! 👌🏻
    The one change i would make if it was my shed would be to have a suspended feed passage down the center of that shed and have the cattle eat at both sides of the pen.
    While you are using a diet feeder, feeding space is still important, nearly all animals should be able to eat at the same time. I think research backs this up 🤔
    You'll figure these things out and iron out all the teething problems with time!
    The man who never made a mistake made nothing 💪🏻

    The auger mixers prefer to have the grains or mix or minerals etc loaded in first and silage on top run a couple shelbournes and now a triolet and they all mix better and less over mixing with grains minerals etc first wholecrop/maize next and always grass last ... And with the bits left on the augers .. put it into 1000 flat out full revs around 800- 1200 kg bet u ittle throw out better less lumps and less on the augers but it's never perfect until they're shined right up couple bakes of straw in there will solve that issue or silage bales

    The dung will stay on slats. You need more cattle to work it down through the slats.

I also consider to use slat mats in my shed to, but it will be interesting to see how it work in this shed first. Will be nice to see your updates on that. As always a joy to watch your videos😀

      @@georgedoorley5628 Not questioning your experience, George. Just asking Tom a question about crowding when feeding. We run 18 inches wide per head at bunk when feeding unless we have weaning calves will go to 24 inch per head. It just looked like all the cattle couldn't eat at same time. I noticed he had about a 90 Lbs. weight difference between head when weighing them. He is probably shooting for a 2.5 Lbs. a day gain. I would imagine he doesn't want any smaller cattle going backwards and the larger ones getting too fleshy.

      @@darrenbock4953 the feed is mixed in a tub feeder .......all ingredients are mixed through the entire ration .....so as long as the feed is kept in front of them 24/7 they will work fine .......different story if u were running short and not feeding to total apatite of the cattle .........then u would need enough head space for everybody ............
      I fee silage ad lib but also feed chopped beet on top of the silage daily I do need to have everybody being able to feed at the same time as there would be chaos if I had not ............
      hope to get a diet feeder some day soon ..........have been concentrating on getting enough sheds and slurry storage up till now
      that shed in the video would have cost a fortune ...........

      The other shed was for the Dairy cows to keep the Ubers clean and infection free they require the better quality beds not saying that the beef stocks comfort is any less import but they actually do better on slats than cubicles and the rubber matts will add a bit more comfort than just concrete
