With regards to jump starting machines. I’ve fitted 175amp anderson connectors to all my machines. Saves lifting bonnets or unbolting floor pans to jump start machines
Love the improvements you have made over the last few years on your own farm Tom, clearly something similar is needed this side of the road. The old sheds were bad enough, far too narrow a bedded area, but at least they were on straw. I fear the new building is going to need some serious re-thinks otherwise you are playing into the hands of the anti-livestock lobby.
For welding the hinges on I can offer a couple of tips. Firstly buy some 90 degree welding magnets which hold the hinge leaving both hands free. Secondly put the hinges in the vice & grind a bevel on the edges which you are going to weld. Helps the welding rod to penatrate deeper forming a stronger weld
A little disappointed that with the money being spent on this whole new operation, that the functional details of things like gates, handling systems and traffic flow weren't pre-planned. Changes during planning are cheap. Changes after construction are expensive.
Any and all Sunday videos welcome The diversity of them is great Merry Christmas Tom, Ginger, Luke, Anna, Katy and everyone on farm, and there families Back UK Farmer's 🇬🇧 Geoff
Wouldn't it be more convenient to get all the cows out into the holding area first, which can be done by the entire crew. Then get them through the crush, and have them exit towards the pen? That way Luke doesn't have to run around the entire pen to get the last cows through the door. Maybe put some fresh cake for them to eat after you took them all out of the pen, so they want to step through the crush to get to the fresh food?
Did someone actually design that shed? Considering ye started with a blank sheet, it's a pretty poor effort. I thought to myself when ye were filling it, that it would be a nightmare to empty the pens near the door. That ye couldn't foresee that is pretty worrying
Regardless of who you use for the race aim to have a curve leading into the crush and have it paneled. Means the cows can’t see what’s coming and they’re feed better into the crush. Keep up the good work and Merry Christmas to you and yours.
I disagree. I follow a hoof trimmer, their races are straight, one side solid but, the cows will follow other cows. They come around a curve and, bam, full on brakes cause they see none of their herd and they have no idea what that dark green thing is! Race should be straight, IMO! Now as far as everyone complaining about the cows being dirty, the shed dirty, if you really think city slickers don't know it's a dirty business, I wonder if you know!! Tom, talk to Graeme about the race and sheds. He's the one who suggests to check your channel out, you know he'll help how ever he can! Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄
Those cows look manky Tom. Why are they all covered in shit? Is this the slat system? No where to lie down other than on the crap that hasn't fallen between the slats?
Great stuff again Tom , to answer the question of why hide a battery, why also hide bonnet release on your van , or fuse box !! Or anything you are likely to want to find on a work vehicle, if they can’t bury it in the bowels of the engine cover it up in a few feet of useless plastic you have to take off first !!🤪
Evening Tom I have used a fixed beef cattle handing system and IAE do a good one that has great safety features and allows you as the farmer to check the cattle at a safe distance
Weight is helpful but not a true indicator of being finished with a mixed herd. That’s only learned by experience. The shorter frame cattle were overweight and you have bigger frame ones which could use more time. Had a neighbor who was a meat inspector for 40 years and he could pick out which ones would go choice, while others graded out as only good. Need to learn what your buyers are looking for to get the best prices.
Yeah... Tom does a lot things very well. But welding is not one of them. It takes a little more patience than he is willing to commit. Little things like completely grinding off the galvanized layer and alignment are optional.
As a subscriber to Crawfords Farm his Te Pari system looks very good with some clever ideas to make life easier. Arable farmer myself and done very little with cattle but looks good in my opinion.

As a farmer it hurts me to see the animals kept in such poor condition. Especially as this has been posted online for the public to see, slats definitely aren’t the future. Please don’t show the public that this is how farmers look after their animals
A very amazing video I had a misfortune, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I also created a channel and am trying to move in that direction, but so far not very successful((jyu
I would turn the crush the other way around. Gather the cows in the holding area, then thru the crush and then they can go back to the shed. Also you be standing at the other site of the crush, where the cows can't come and help😅
I love watching this channel and seeing the inprovements you are making to your farm but I'm really disappointed to see how dirty the cows are in that new shed😢
@@lizzyM2574 thanks for the support. I do agree. We need to look at ways to improve the cattle. Hopefully brushes will be a big help or we will have to look at something else.
Usually there dirty if you've the shed understocked on slats, not enough traffic on the slats to push down the Sh@t. I'd say maybe pins a bit square too much lying down space compared to feed space. Also I do believe rubber mats can sometimes make the cattle dirty.
For the batteries. Would it be worth attaching some anderson connectors to each one? Use the 50A ones just to connect a charger. Or if you want to jump start use bigger ones. I have done this on my vehicles and have an anderson connector on my charger. Saves me having to faff getting to the battery. Well under £2 a connector, very rugged and a great design.
The best race I have seen had a semi circular forcing pen at one end ,2 separate panels (ie .not against a wall) for both side access, every panel was able to open if an animal goes down and sheeted with stock board to stop legs from going through and a full crush at the end with weigh bridge adjustable and opening sides for vetting etc Look on line at some of the suppliers design , temore engineering do several
Some big gates in the big pens to get them in the race. Need a big yard in the handling area so you can fit the whole group easy. Remember they arnt quite dairy cows. A functional forcing yard you don’t have to get in that flows, and a handy drafting race into multiple yards. Remember it’s got to be safe, easy and not require 30 ppl to do 🤪 good luck.

When designing a handling system look up "Temple Grandin". Her designs are the best in the world!
There's also a really great film covering her early life during university and developing her designs.
