Absolutely they need to advertise this better. I ordered one the other day, not even realizing it was a “charged lemonade”. I thought it was a flavored lemonade. I am 13 weeks pregnant, the recommended daily max of caffeine during pregnancy is 200mg. Thankfully when the cashier asked if I wanted half or full it threw me off, and I saw it was charged and looked it up in time, but I could have easily missed it and consumed an unsafe amount of caffeine.

The sugar content alone is dangerous..parents really have no idea what they are feeding their kids which is a bigger issue in general. It should be common sense that caffeine isn't good for kids in any quantity and small children don't need any added sugar in their diet either honestly.

It's funny how it's advertised on door dash but not in the restaurant. I ordered a meal with the charged lemonade and on the door dash app it said "this drink has as much caffeine as our dark roast coffee" but when I went into Panera to pick it up there was no advertisements saying the lemonade was that heavily caffeinated. In fact 2 had signs saying sugar free but not a single sign about it being about as caffeinated as a tall Red Bull. I could easily see how people with disabilities and heart conditions could end up drinking this by mistake. Panera definitely needs to lose the wrongful death lawsuits because those deaths were definitely their fault because of lack of advertising.

Then half of another. We went and did our debate and I was feeling on top of the world but almost panicky. On the bus ride back, I felt like I was dying. As a caffeine addict, I'd say one cup throughout the day would be ok for most others in the same situation. However, I would not suggest drinking almost 4.

The fact that both MatPat & Panera mention Dark Roast coffee multiple times when it's the roast with the LEAST caffeine really says it all on how little caffeine in understood in the collective conscience.
Also, Panera allows sells that lemonade to-go in half gallon bottles. I almost bought one this week, but passed since it was ~$11.
Update: Since this comment is gaining a lot a traction I think it's worth highlighting Kyle_P's comment on how this is actually a double misconception. The TL;DR is coffee beans puff up and become quite airy the more they're roasted. An easier visual might be popcorn, but since there's no shell it's gradual. A scoop of dark roast is considerably less dense than a lighter one and in turn less bean material overall, thus the coffee content as a whole, not just the caffeine, is less.

I know that some lemonade brands are thinking about bringing UK caffeinated versions.
Why do sugary and fruits beverages need caffeine anyway. Why do you need to change your heart and brain activity with a drug every time you have a nice beverage.
I understand that you get generations are moving away from alcohol but that doesn't mean we have to swap a neuro depressant for a neurostimulant and act like that's totally reasonable.
I think we need to have more things like regular lemonade and orangeade and decaf soft drinks. If I want caffeine I'll go have some tea.
Many people don't think water, if they're having caffeinated soft drinks most if the day. Maybe a caffeinated pre work out before gym. That will all add up.
Caffeine also has a relatively long half life so it stays in your system for a long time.
And then imagine in a weekend and you go out and have alcoholic beverages - then you just end up with high levels of a neurostimulant and a neurodeoresswnt competing. This will wreak havoc on cardiac health.

@@felipecastanha9161 this is an interesting complexity you probably could experience for yourself with enough caffeine or stimulants, though I wouldn’t recommend trying.
I also have ADHD and I also get hyperactive focus from stimulants. I’m on literally the prescription stimulant to focus day to day. Caffeine is too potent, especially with my meds, and gives me headaches, but it also relaxes me if I have enough at once. In my early teens, it took about one personal size plastic bottle of Mountain Dew to induce drowsiness. My understanding is that you have the pathways that require attention attended to by the stimulant, so you can get things done. But, after those are saturated, the pathways to get things done are the next to be saturated. Eventually I stop being able to do anything, and then my inability to sleep normally catches up with me and I crash. Having everything be nice and quiet in my brain is nice… until I wake up half an hour later with a splitting headache, but that’s a me problem.
That’s the best way I can describe how caffeine does that. It’s really all about quieting things down enough that you get bored or sleeplessness catches up with you.

The "large" size is 30 ounces and has 390 mg of caffeine, a can of energy drink is 16 ounces and has around 160 - two cans would be 32 ounces at 320 mg of caffeine. Unlike energy drinks, you can get free refills on the lemonades and most people don't realize just how much caffeine 390 mg is, so one can easily end up consuming several cups of this stuff and die from caffeine overdose.
And unlike coffee/espresso which is typically served hot and sipped over a longer period of time, the lemonades are served cold and can easily be downed very quickly. Cold coffee offerings at most places are very pricey, which is a deterrent on its own from downing several in one sitting, whereas the lemonades are the same price as the fountain soda and have FREE refills during the same visit.
A person sitting at Panera for an 8 hour work shift might have 2-4 cups of coffee during that time with a few cups of water in between, or might opt to save some money and just get the refillable soda. Going for the lemonade instead of the soda in what some might perceive as a slightly "healthier" option (if it were normal lemonade) could turn out to be a deadly decision made more likely to occur because there aren't any warnings about the risk.

I am really sensitive to caffeine and so I check and double check any beverage I drink. I know that restaurant workers get a little miffed when I ask if they really did give me decaf, but I don't like feeling like I am having a heart attack or stroke. If I even think they gave me the wrong order I have to toss it. It is also extremely difficult to find decaffeinated beverages at most restaurants, which means half the time I can't even drink any thing they serve except water.

I thought of the Starbucks Refreshers before MatPat mentioned them, they originally weren’t marketed towards kids, but more so the people that don’t like coffee but can feel good about a “healthy” alternative to coffee. They were at first disclaimed as being made from green coffee bean juice, and I had assumed everyone knew that. But the concentrate was watered down and had significant less caffeine than the Panera super juice.
They became popular with kids because of tik tok and “secret menus”

glad to see this being talked about more. i work at panera as a barista/cashier. i had one cup of these during one of my shifts and later that night i experienced something that felt similar to a seizure. my entire body was shaking uncontrollably, and i felt trapped in my body. it lasted for about four hours, going on and off, and especially was in my legs to the point i couldn't walk or move besides laying on my bed. i thought it was something as a result of bad anxiety, but the next shift when i drank a small cup of it again, i experienced the same thing. this went on for days. i didn't get medical treatment (i didn't know whether to go to the hospital or not), but i noticed that the lemonades really did something to me. these not having warnings on them about the caffeine amount surely contributed. after drinking these i noticed i've had more recent health issues despite being healthy previously.
