Well said. The only thing i thonk i would add would be that, when you can, leave questions for the players to answer for themselves. Whether its about the world or their characters. Leave them with some shred of inspiration to ponder on, rather than an exposition dump that answers every possible question forever. They'll spend time thinking about the game long after it ends which is a win for both the players and the GM.

Absolutely. Like I said, you don't want characters to have their entire story complete, you want them to have those later in life accomplishments left unsaid

As a player, I usually just focus on the character's personality and general outlook. They always have some kind of backstory, but I never really expect the DM to focus on their story alone, and they don't need some kind of grand character arc. I'd honestly rather just play the character, as he would react during the adventure, one step at a time.

@@fleetcenturion ayers who try to insert a great, grand storyline are setting themselves up for failure and heartache. The grand stroy is the party's story, not therez

Well said. I've had PCs retire (due to players changing what they wanted to play), finish a major goal (defeat the dragon / evil duke etc.) and start new characters, as well as drop out for real life reasons. The endings vary, you just want them to be at a satisfying stopping point whether its happily ever after or a new chapter. Players who are still with you tend to come up with a satisfying ending (for them / their character) Real life tends to leave to the most "hanging" endings. That has led to some DM configured endings for characters primarily for the benefit of their (remaining) PC friends / allies.

@@brucehubbell9116 I typically try to avoid pencilimg in random "write offs" for PCs, but that's me.

@@drivinganddragons1818 I wouldn't for any character whose player was still present, that would be up to them. For people whose real life events take them permanently away from the game I might. Some may wander off into the sunset, others might become NPCs continuing what they were about. Some might "go home" out of the campaign area etc. It depends on what was going on with the character when the player exited the stage.

@brucehubbell9116 that's pretty much what I'm saying. They leave for some reason, I don't seek to "wrap up their story".
