FROM THE ARCHIVES | Single Pilot IFR (1992)

- Pulled from the AOPA Air Safety Institute archives, this VHS (©1992) provides great tips for planning and conducting single pilot IFR that are still relevant today. For the full nostalgic experience read through our Safety Advisor that originally accompanied this VHS (last updated in 2006): www.aopa.org/-/media/Files/AO...
While instrument flying has modernized since (1992), the principles of successful single-pilot resource management, thorough preflight planning, and sound decision making have stayed the same. "Single-pilot IFR can be as safe as you choose to make it, and there are many things you can do to make it safer."

Love the intro music! Sounds like something else I very occasionally was able to snatch a view of my older brother's VHS 😳🤣
😂😂
Hahahahahaha
Need to be of a certain age to get it ;)
LOLLLL
I was thinking the original TERMINATOR film
Very relevant and important in reminding us that the basic skills are still needed no matter how far technology has taken us in the past 30 years.
I love the fact the pilot is using an old landline phone and is using a handheld radio to call the tower/clearance delivery. Today's technology makes piloting so much easier.
This video made me realize how fortunate we are to have technology like ForeFlight.
"Written by Richard Taylor." That certainly explains the high quality. Good job, folks.
"Good planning and preparation can make the difference between a pleasant flight experience and a nightmare of stress and confusion." Well put sir.
I have been thinking about going for my IFR certification and I hope to start it within the next year or so.
Thanks for sharing this video again!!!

Do it! It’s not easy but so worth it.
Agreed. Do it. I got my PPL, bought into an airplane and scheduled my IR training to start about 5-6 weeks after I was signed off to fly "my" plane. Awesome experience.
Man you gotta love that aesthetic. Great decision to upload, I'll finish the video in time. Thanks for this.
the vibe is 90's but the content is timeless!
I really love these old videos. Thanks for uploading :)
I received my IFR rating in 1992. I still have the VHS Tapes with this and many other aviation videos. Technology has come a long way. With Garmin Pilot, Foreflight, more accurate weather forecast, in cockpit radar (though delayed by minutes), and better autopilots there is more information and capabilities to enhance IFR and VFR flying experience. But don't let the new technologies lull you into not making sound go/no go decisions. Those decisions are still the same.
We couldn’t agree more!
Nice. Thanks for the content!
This brings back memories. Yes , I’m old. 😂
Single pilot IFR in IMC is actually fun with an AP, and it’s a lot of unnecessary stress without.
AP?
William Butler Autopilot :)
From my experience I've never been in a GA airplane with an autopilot. Seen a few in UA-cam videos for two or three orders of magnitude higher cost than I can afford.
Want regular pilots to use higher quality equipment to be safer, then reduce the cost of getting that equipment by reducing the need corporate liability coverage. IMHO
William Butler Well today's digital APs are actually quite affordable; the installation is the more expensive part as it still requires to get to work a system of computing hardware and software, cables, pulleys and servos. Once it's up and running and used correctly within the operational limitations (it definitely takes some practice) it's the best tool ever to have in a cockpit. No wonder it's the way pretty much all commercial planes are being flown.
Even a simple wing leveler can be of great help and contribute to safety in single pilot IFR if budget is a concern.
@jack torrence Because they're trying to maintain ground visibility. The autopilot wasn't programmed to an IFR flight plan and the aircraft wasn't at a proper altitude and has no knowledge of existing traffic.
It will give you level flight into terrain.
Excellent content. EXCELLENT! Anyone else notice how slim that FAR/AIM was that he held up?? 😅 it sure has gotten big - things have only gotten more complex since this filming, all the more reason to stay on top of your training knowledge.
All written in blood.
Still have that Jeppesen brown binder collecting dust; amazing the numbers of binders you can now fit in your tablet.
Great video very useful for my training
I actually was in one of these videos back in the day. For AOPA! Lol good times
AOPA Air Safety Foundation did a nice job on this instructional video
Nicely done
I've got a headset with a boom mic - I'm all set!
I love this 90s video. Totally makes me miss the 80s.
Greatly appreciate! Some advice can turn out to be useful for flight simmers too, since it is mainly single pilot IFR. I'm not comparing simmers to real life pilot, just saying it might be useful also for people who can't afford RL flights (yet). Cheers from italy
I remember when FBOs got ASI weather. That 20 minute pixilated radar was the best thing ever.
Are you able to post "Ups and Downs of Takeoffs and Landings" to this channel?
I’m diggin’ the North Jersey accents.
“Reh-dee foah tay-kowaf?”
“Yeh”
Weird seeing the ILS 23 into KMMU in 1992. I'm based there!
I always want to know the nearest VFR because I know I’m not flying a 737.
I feel like I'm playing old school Street Fighter in the intro or Golden Axe.
Really interesting video. I think to obtain a PPL, pilots should be proficient in IFR as it seems to me a lot of accidents occur as a result of VFR pilots suddenly finding themselves in poor conditions. I realize this would increase the number of hours required in order to obtain the right to fly but it would save a lot of lives.
Usually, unintentional flight into IMC is a judgement problem, not a training problem. Careless VFR pilots 'dipping their toes' into bad weather and then get trapped.
I would have ignored a controller lapse and intercepted the LOC. It was very enjoyable when I did it!!
At 27:00 - I don't see why the turn back onto the loc had to be so steep other than maybe for dramatic effect for the video. Just perform a standard rate 1 turn.
Merci.
17:23 That guy needs to invest in an iPAD.
If you can't tell.. I'm kidding.
There was a difference between using the word "Mayday" and using the word "Emergency" back in the 80's? I've always thought of them as 'death is on the line' words with no meaningful distinction between them; but I started flying a bit into the 90's.
Anyone who enjoyed this should check out ABC Wide World of Flying on Steve Khan's channel (he was a producer of some of them himself).
I guess everyone was left handed back in the day
Hey Talli, know where I could find a good pilot in the area! 😉
@@IllegalAlienRacing no idea
Thank god for glass cockpits
18:30 Vacuum pump failure is only an emergency when you're in weather?
Reason being you’ll lose your attitude and heading indicator and could experience vertigo. Whereas when you’re not in the clouds the attitude indicator is just a back up to looking outside and seeing the real horizon.
Blarney alert @ 4:40 ;)
The changes in technology in the cockpit make this seem even more dated.
I guess UAVs don't need to watch this video
Why does our Early Computer Bro dress up like a French guy before entering the cockpit?
Did people actually call up flight service like that? The dude is talking to the person on the other end like they are a bot

All the new technology is great, but every bit of it continues to take the pilot's eyes away from the primary instruments. BTW, if you need on board weather radar, you're probably flying too close to 'weather'. You're not flying an airliner. Maybe it's better to be on one....
That suit just does not fit well. It looks like the sleeves hang down to his knees.
Single Pilot IFR - most demanding flying. Thats why we make 2X airline pilot salaries....... NOT.
If only JFK Jr watched this video
True but he was flying VFR
This video is out dated with many bad statements. Delete it...
