for people who knows RF game it is obvious he was playing poorly this day but you forget the very good performances at RG as the 5 finals show. At Guy Forget opinion (and mine) the actual Federer could win Roland Garros even against Nadal ( easy to Roger do the same Thiem has done at Barcelona against Nadal)
Luis Reis the only way Fed can beat Nadal at RG is when Nadal is suffering health issues / injured. Now fed doesnt even compete in the RG grandslam - great sportsmanship isn't it
Federer just had his breakthrough moment in 2003 and was beginning to dominate, but yet Kuerton on this surface was able to make him look ordinary. To me fed maybe lacked tactical experience on clay, but his shots kind of sat up on clay rather than kuerton’s whose shots went through the court. Well played Kuerton.
Federer primarily a fast court player and great on fast surfaces possibly slightly better than Djokovic. Only 1 French open when Nadal was severely injured in that tournament. He only had to play a subpar soderling.

As a kid growing up in Italy through the late 80's, 90's and beyond, there has only ever been one male tennis player that I tried to copy on a tennis court - Guga and Guga only. Imperious! Class personified.
Only found out recently that Guga had a one handed backhand, a formidable one too. I'm a Rafa fan but I would have loved to see those two battle it out at Roland Garros. It would have been an epic match.
I remember before the match, that some critics said " that this match could be the same results like the match kuerten vs Ferrero 6-4,6-4,6-3 french open 2001. Ferrero was also the favorit 2001 like federer 2004 it was ... just as it happened .
if only roger survived this match. this was his best chance to win 4 slams in a year since there was no nadal or djokovic. gustavo was probably the best caly player in the draw, although unseeded. so heartbreaking. but good job gustavo
He tried the same crap in 2008 against Nadal..since he new after three 4 set losses from 2005-2007 against Rafa he couldnt beat him baseline rallying. Totally backfired and he got stomped.
Guga...a true gentleman of the game with simplicity. Always a people's choice and down to earth fellow. What a personality with incredible feel of the ball...!!!👏🎊🎉
Roland Garros can honor this great player, Gustavo Kuerten, who started to succeed at the Freech Open in 1997, putting his best matches on UA-cam. Thank you.
This was the period I started to watch tennis and I did not know Kuerten that well yet, did not know anything about tennis history. I've always been a Federer fan since he beat Schalke in a Davis Cup match (played so easily). I loved the way Kuerten played and although the commentator said he was a previous champ I did not realise how much of a champ he really was. Such great clay court strokes!
If Federer had won the French Open in 2004 he would have been the first player since Rod Laver in 1969 to win all 4 Slams one calendar year. He won the Australian, Wimbleon and US Opens in 2004. It was unfortunate he had to play a resurgent Kuerten, 3 times winner of the French Open and a clay court great, in only the 3rd round. Kuerten played brilliantly that day but eventually lost to Nalbandian in the quarter final.

I tried to tell people Fed played indoors on carpet and clay growing up...there was no grass and hards for him...so clay being his worst surface is bullcrap....
Fed is simply not a grinder...he has a. pretty game. but he can get dirty if needed...
but it's clay excuse is so unbecoming of the Supposed GOAT...that's why he is not the best and he himself knows it....it has to kill Federer inside..
for people who knows RF game it is obvious he was playing poorly this day but you forget the very good performances at RG as the 5 finals show. At Guy Forget opinion (and mine) the actual Federer could win Roland Garros even against Nadal ( easy to Roger do the same Thiem has done at Barcelona against Nadal)
SnakeFace where is fed at the FO now? Lol
Federer lacked nothing, he was outplayed by a superior clay player. Let us not bring excuses for Fed's loss, it is disrespectful on Kuerten.
Federer primarily a fast court player and great on fast surfaces possibly slightly better than Djokovic. Only 1 French open when Nadal was severely injured in that tournament. He only had to play a subpar soderling.
@@jameswalker6864 For these who clam that RF had the best one handed backhand this is the best match to watch to prove how wrong they were.. Guga just made him look like ordinary top 50 player with a big serve.
@@1nalh severely injured???
@quackery once he said, Nadal was severely injured, he lost all credibility
Rs! @@felixroj81
I would have liked to see a final between Rafa and Guga.
the two most beautiful players to watch of all times in this Roland Garros match
At 1:57 . What a screamer !
P.S.- Guga was the only guy whose grunting was soothing to me.
because he does it while hitting the ball and immediately tones it down after, not 1-2 seconds after he hits some delay scream comes up
R F Hahaha...me too! When I think of a player’s grunt Guga comes to mind.
back then when there were empty seats in a Federer match
he was already number 1 tho
Was empty the first few games on the first set , by the third you fool was jammed .
Loved Guga’s backhand more than Feds
to win RG 3 times and beat Federer in '04, great clay court player!
Gustavo is such a good guy. Beautiful style in Tennis.
Humble.
Saudades Guga,campeão em humildade,talento....
Thanks for uploading these beautiful points. Two legends. Guga, RF and Boris are my all time favorites. Gracias por subir estos hermosos puntos. Mis 3 favoritos juntos con Boris Becker
Ronaldinho, Guga e Schumacher eram imbatíveis no início dos anos 2000.
Guga Kuerten! Where I learned to do an extreme western grip forehand and semi-western grip backhand.
As a kid growing up in Italy through the late 80's, 90's and beyond, there has only ever been one male tennis player that I tried to copy on a tennis court - Guga and Guga only. Imperious! Class personified.
The best backhand ever, I remember he wiped the floor with Federer in this match.
1:57..OMG!!
Only found out recently that Guga had a one handed backhand, a formidable one too. I'm a Rafa fan but I would have loved to see those two battle it out at Roland Garros. It would have been an epic match.
no not epic... it would be a beatdown
I remember before the match, that some critics said " that this match could be the same results like the match kuerten vs Ferrero 6-4,6-4,6-3 french open 2001. Ferrero was also the favorit 2001 like federer 2004 it was ... just as it happened .
Eterno guga!!! Un grande
if only roger survived this match. this was his best chance to win 4 slams in a year since there was no nadal or djokovic. gustavo was probably the best caly player in the draw, although unseeded. so heartbreaking. but good job gustavo
O último lampejo de um craque. De uma lenda para outra. Eterno Guga.
Min 1:58: Kuerten hits an insane backhand winner, 4 steps behind the baseline! Very rare stuff…
2:03 If you try to serve & volley on clay, _you're gonna have a bad time_
He tried the same crap in 2008 against Nadal..since he new after three 4 set losses from 2005-2007 against Rafa he couldnt beat him baseline rallying. Totally backfired and he got stomped.
2004 was the year Henman made the SFs at Roland Garros. I’m guessing that tactic was used.
@@krisherdown Henman did not play serve and volley at RG.
@@jameswalker6864 he did. He was playing very aggressively and was blowing Cora out and then something shifted.
Guga...a true gentleman of the game with simplicity. Always a people's choice and down to earth fellow. What a personality with incredible feel of the ball...!!!👏🎊🎉
He had so much going for him,, and I enjoyed watching him, except for the really loud grunting. Many will disagree. Just my 2 cents.
Roland Garros can honor this great player, Gustavo Kuerten, who started to succeed at the Freech Open in 1997, putting his best matches on UA-cam. Thank you.
It is a travesty for tennis that we never got to witness Nadal-Kuerten matches that would have been bangers from 2005-2007.
It's hard, to speculate about a challenge between Rafa and Guga. The fact, would been a great match of "Gladiators".
Que orgulho!!!
Guga jogou muitoooo
Pena q o quadril acabou com a carreira dele...
Cool to see people from all over the world respecting Guga 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
If Federer had won the French Open in 2004 he would have been the first player since Rod Laver in 1969 to win all 4 Slams one calendar year. He won the Australian, Wimbleon and US Opens in 2004. It was unfortunate he had to play a resurgent Kuerten, 3 times winner of the French Open and a clay court great, in only the 3rd round. Kuerten played brilliantly that day but eventually lost to Nalbandian in the quarter final.
Pelé, Senna and Guga are boons from Brasil to the world
🇧🇷
Guga é uma lenda do nosso esporte🇧🇷🎾
Tricampeão de Roland Garros🏆🏆🏆
Please upload the full game, not only 3 minute highlights...this match is a RG legendary match
Gustavo!! My all time gravel favorite! Such a nice guy
I'm just starting to play tennis, but I find this debate and exchange of offences between fans of different players ridiculous.
How time flies....it was like yesterday!😑Beautiful years!
Man what beautiful game guga had, beating the young maestro so handily when he's entering his prime shows just how skilled of a player he was
The swan song of Guga against a player who later would become the GOAT. Guga's talent and charisma are missed by all. ❤
Ê Gugão... Saudades 💚💛
Por favor que jugadorazo GUGA!!!
Valeu Guga!!!
On this time, Guga didn't know that he just rolled over the Goat
I'll never forget Guga! He was nothing to fuck with on the dirt that's for sure.
How the hell can you hit a backhand like that? going backwards from baseline and still a fck winner. 1:56 Best one hand backhand in history. Period.
its true,,,when I first saw it I was like WOW>>.no way! ...ppl don't realize how tough is to hit it from there,,amazing shot
Wawrinka did it way better in RG 2015 against Novak.
Guga best of all times in Clay court.
Miss you, Guga!
Orgulho de ser brasileiro , Guga mito !!!!!
it really is a blessing there were players like him and from '05 on Nadal
Imagine just federer ... tennis wouldv been so boring the past 15 years
Guga is the Best One Handed Backhand on Clay 👍
Stan Wawrinka
Ultimo grande jogo do guga. Faz falta um outro tenista desse naipe no país
The day the best one handed backhand in the game met an ever better one. Guga's!
Quel joueur fantastique !
The only Grand Slam match Federer lost that year. speaks volumes of what Kuerten did
