Makes perfect sense. In the beginning was the word and that word was Logos (logic, existence, reason, rationale, was is, etc). The opposite of this is chaos (formless, irrational, disordered, illogical, etc). Where chaos isn't anything and, therefore, can never be anything, Logos is everything that ever was, is and is yet to be. Logos begins the time, form, and coherence, upon which everything else builds and grows. It is the Word, Logos, that initiated the transformation of no-thing into every-thing and why it is always the beginning.

Well, it’s actually, In the beginning was logos and logos was with God and Logos was God.
As, the Greek word Logos is translated to “word”
      Christ is, obviously, The Logos.

Recently spent some time looking into the Sikh faith, and they have a concept of Shabad. Typically seen translated as The Word, seems to indicate the creative power behind the universe. God is formless, has no body with which to act, but He has a voice. He says, "let there be light," and so it's so.
Another major concept is Naam, The Name. The main practice of Sikhism is to chant the Naam. The idea seems to be that by using a name for God, you direct the mind to God. As you maintain this focus in meditation, you start to hear the Shabad, described as an unstruck sound current(in my experience something like high pitch tones of a hearing test). By focusing and meditating on this, the soul returns to The Source and merges with God. Samsara is escaped, eternal life in the Oneness of God.
I'm curious how this might be related to Logos, and if there are similar mentions of these types of sounds in Christian mysticism?

I believe the term in India that would be close to the concept of Logos and Tao is, Dharma. One cannot go to some Indian philosopher or Guru but as in all academic inquiry, you have to go back to original sources. As I wrote to Jones in a past email: most are familiar with the Hindu concept of Reincarnation. Without a concept of Logos how then does reincarnation determine in what form a personality will be reborn? Is there non consistency? Yes there is, and the determining agency is Dharma. It is a concept as broad in Hinduism as Logos is in Western thought.

    • @ChurchoftheEternalLogos
      @ChurchoftheEternalLogos  4 роки тому +5

Your take is failure to actually account for what Logos is, coming from Heraclitus through the Greek philosophical tradition. It is not the same thing as Dharma. Perennialalist presuppositions are always trying to find similarities between traditions and then make an equivalence despite the worldview/paradigm it is coming from is fundamentally different. Following one's dharma as addressed in the Bhagavad Gita (Krishna to Arjuna) is absolutely nothing like the concept of Logos. Any cosmology of reincarnation is fundamentally relativistic which is evidenced by the breakdown of epistemology in Eastern traditions generally. However, I would agree Taoism is an ancient precursor to Logos (books: Christ the Eternal Tao & Jesus Sutras), in its understanding of a universal organizing principle. Daoists also believe in a Heaven, not eternal reincarnation until one reaches Moksha. That stuff is fundamentally illogical along with all forms of Paganism and Buddhism.

First, let me thank you for your time in thoughtfully responding. Engaging ideas such as this with someone as apparently informed as yourself is like stumbling upon an oasis in an intellectual desert. I hope you view my response with the same consideration and grace. As Paul says, we all view through a glass darkened.
Let me say I am not a perennialist, find the likes of Campbell interesting but wanting and although I do tend to view issues in a Jungian perspective of universal archetypes I have altered the concept somewhat. I do not however view the various expressions of these archetypes to be equally valid as do perennialists. I am a Christian and as such am convinced the Christ, the man Jesus is the ultimate expression of the mind and will of God. But with that said, God has given all cultures revelation in order to organize just society and it is to these revelations, divergent as they may be, I focus on. I am NOT saying that the Tao is equivalent to the Logos and I part with Catholic doctrine that Plato's description is what is being represented by John when he writes that the the Word was made flesh. The Hebrew concept of "Torah" predates the Hellenistic idea but in its broadest interpretation is the same. (Dont' conflate the concept of "Torah," with the written text of the first five books of scripture.") There are degrees of correspondence to the ontological as reveled only in Christ Jesus. When seeking similarities in belief one is seeking the universal revelation of God as expressed by His grace to all cultures; but doing so should not be confused with seeking equivalence which the perennialists seek after. But their project to seek a fundamental universal is a valid one. Their fault is not in intention but rather their humanistic a-prior bias.
In this view - and as I reminded Jones and he agreed with - there are concepts that approximate Logos in other cultures. I disagree with Jones and most RCC theologians that the concept of Logos was derived from Hellenic philosophy as I would reject Aristitilan notions of the Supreme Being as so removed as to not be able to interact with humans.
The concept of Dharma is not specifically addressed in the conversation between Krishna and Arjuna. The topic there is the ultimate meaninglessness of action given a cyclic Hindu (Aryian) world view. This, as a Christian is at the heart of my apologetic against Hinduism. But the Mahabharata is not about Arjuna but the elder Yudisthera and it is this most Western commentators miss; and I would suggest most Hindu expositors also miss in making the Gita the focus. What the greater narrative is about is that there is a course of universal equilibrium based upon God's laws that should at least be sought. The Hindu (and generally followed Eastern rational deconstruction of illusion as in Buddhism) I also reject and for the same reasons I reject Hellenistic rationalism and the absurd extension of modernistic Western philosophy. (I just recently re-read Platos, Republic, and was struck by the juvenile sophism of it.)
Jones concedes (after I suggested the idea to him) that the Tao is a simile of the concept of Logos. This does not suggest that he nor I accept it as an equivalent. Obviously the concept of the Tao comes with the notion of monism. We're not talking about that level of critique but rather pointing to the essence regardless of the cultural connotations attendant. The Hindu notion of Dharma falls into that same category. It is a recognition that there exists a universal law that governs and ultimately rectifies change. As I stated, reincarnation is the Hindu expression of justice and therefore must have at its base some universal and immutable foundation for judgement.
And you are completely wrong that any concept of reincarnation is relativistic. In fact the opposite is the case. The situation in Hinduism ones finds oneself in the next integration is determined by a universal and consistent law. Buddhists do not believe in personal reincarnation so the point is mute. "Breakdown of epistemology in Eastern thought..." There is a tendency in Hindu though which westerners misinterpret as a denial of the Principle of Noncontradiction, but that's a much broader discussion and space does not permit.
But as to your assertion that there is a breakdown in epistemology, nothing could be further from the truth. All human thought at a point breaks down into metaphysics which in Western religious terms we like to think is self-evident objective epistemology, but I don't have the energy nor time to disabuse of you of that notion now. In fact the problem I found as a follower of Eastern thought was it's utter reliance upon human empirical deconstructive logic as an epistemology. (We need to make a critical distinction between Bronze Age Vedic Hinduism and post Axial Period Upanishads Hinduism as we must recognize a profound shift in human consciousness after the Late Bronze Age Collapse even in the thought of Isaiah who was a contemporary with Zoroaster, Buddha, Socrates, Confucius, et al if I missed anyone. Something of a profound nature happened starting around 800BC which is with us today and getting a grasp on that "something" is something I am most interested in.)

      @@ChurchoftheEternalLogos
As a sidebar to Perennialism, I would offer the observation that the American philosopher William James if a significant contributor to that line of thought in his attempt to optimistically counter Nietzsche's quite profound and even prophetic vision expressed in, The Madman. James theorizes, (he was first a psychologist) there would arrises a pragmatic organic utilitarian religion based not upon whether God exists but rather upon the psychological transcendent necessity due to our awareness of personal mortality. History proved him wrong, but its an idea worth pursuing. There are of course occult expressions of perennialism such as notably the writing of H.P. Blavatsky and others along these lines, but even in the occult there has always been the controversy between pagans and Gnostics.

As a final thought: I believe you continue the error of RCC dogma - as does Jones - in thinking that the concept of Logos is the "discovery" via unaided reason without revelation of Heraclitus, who was a pagan. The elevation of Plato and Aristotle to the position sainthood as exemplified by their statures being included with Christian saints at the square of St Peters, in my opinion, is unfortunate. "Church of the Eternal Logos." I like that. Flesh it out.

    • @ChurchoftheEternalLogos
      @ChurchoftheEternalLogos  4 роки тому +2

You're clearly making false assumptions about my position. I am Eastern Orthodox, not Catholic. Any familiarity with my channel would make that clear. I fundamentally disagree with you on about everything you've written and see multiple self contradictions. Perennialism is relativism; and in response to that use an American pragmatist. Pragmatism is relative though James and Dewey are different. James definition of religion is phenomenological. Again akin to subjectivism and relativism. Have you read The Gita? The whole conversation is about following ones dharma. Meaninglessness has only to do with death of friends and family that worries Arjuna and is reassured about the meaninglessness of forms by Krishna due to reincarnation. You should reread that text. You missed the whole dialogue. I disagree with you on basically everything else you had to say too but don't have the time or interest too write it all out. Suffice it to say we agree to disagree. Hope all is well. God bless 🙏

There is absolutely no chance for anybody to have a "normal" give and take "discussion" with EMJ. At about 23:00 he suggests about as much saying something like "is there anything left to discuss after I have just stated everything there is to say about everything?". The browbeaten host of the video almost until the end is left grunting occasional agreement. That's what browbeaters do.
Don't get me wrong. I have been a major EMJ fan for years. I have read all of his Big Books, some of the smaller ones and subscribe to his web site and magazine. He is a genius. But a problem with genius is that it rarely knows its own limits. And it always gets tripped up over its most obvious omissions.
This video notably posted many images from Orthodox Christian tradition. EMJ has no idea about anything relating to Christian Orthodoxy. Maybe he does, but he won't let on to it. Why? Because of his blind (yes, blind!) loyalty to "Rome".
EMJ is a shooting star. He has made unbelievable contributions to intellectual, historical and religious "progress" during the past ten/twenty years. He's courageous. His gifts have made him indomitable in the debating arena. Would that pride triggered eagerness not undo him.

Agreed. It's like arguing with the guy who invented the wheel, which is a monumental achievement to be sure, but when you suggest anything else... sled runners... NO, THE WHEEL, tracks, NO, THE WHEEL, perhaps an airplane? NO... THE WHEEL. This blind faith ignores the fact that there are many roads to God. Countless souls are born in places that never heard of Jesus or Catholicism, and it is very possible these men still understand God and Logos (because he made himself and his work understandable to us) and they may live their lives as good men in accordance with this - Are you telling me God abandons them at death because they don't know of Jesus or the Pope? IMHO there is and should be no religion. Logos is the religion - an inherent understanding of Gods laws we obey and try to live by, and we keep our relationship with God as private as we do any other family member, because it is a personal thing and I believe God prefers it that way. At least I do. I do not want or need another man to tell me how to love my wife, or God.

Honestly this sounds like a load of nonsense. The Muslims DID have science and philosophy, in fact much of western science/phil was built on top of what remained of Islamic science. Copernicus himself, the originator of the scientific resolution relied on the works of many Muslim astronomers.
India and China also did have science, its just not very well known or well researched. India for example developed trigonometry and numerals which the Arabs later took and developed. China had tons of inventions...etc
Finally, civilizations rise and fall, and so probably will western civ.

The word depended upon writing. But the Greeks did not recognize this truth. They insisted the word, the Logos, needed to be spoken and not written. And this is why belief in Christianity supercedes the performance of the commandments. If the commandment is the point of departure the the doing of the commandment informs the practitioner. But to do the commandment one must first interpret the written word, which is not belief but rather knowledge.

    E. Michael Jones is misinformed about India. Buddhism was a response to the caste system implemented by the Brahmans. Hinduism and Buddhism both have very articulate descriptions of the cycles of history. Taoism comments on how action begets reaction, the Taoist concept of 'wuwei' or (non-action) calls attention to how every action we take should be sacred, calculated, rationalized because all actions have equal and opposite reactions, which is basic physics.
These Eastern religions absolutely have something to offer the world and the West. The Catholic church is sinking under the weight of its own overbearing authority!

Roman Catholicism or Universal Roman rule IS NOT Scriptural Christianity.
Catholicism follows the traditions and teachings of men while true Scriptural Christianity follows Yahushua Ha Mashiach.
" There is but One GOD and one mediator between GOD and man, the man Ha Mashiach Yahushua. " 1 Timothy 2:5
One is the word echad and means one not a trinity in unity.
Anytime you step outside of the monotheistic Hebraic understanding of the Scriptures, you end up in error and this presentation proves it.
Please show us the term GOD the Son in the Scriptures.
John would never contradict what both Matthew and Luke have written that clearly points to the full humanity of Yahushua Ha Mashiach.
logos means a spoken intention, a spoken promise, a spoken plan or a spoken word. It referred to who GOD was and we can only know someone, even GOD by what he speaks and does so in the beginning was GOD's spoken word, His intentions for His creation. This word was who he was and His ability to keep His word proved that His word was exactly who He was and deserving of being trusted.
When we give and keep our word, it proves we are who we say we are and if we are trustworthy.
    Yahuwah GOD.
" There is no GOD besides Me...I, the LORD, am the maker of all things, stretching out the heavens by Myself, and spreading out the earth ALONE." Isaiah 46; & 24.
So please show us where Yahuwah GOD revealing himself as e triune god.

    • @christopherlaing7338

@Shema Echad As I stated, Roman Catholicism IS NOT Scriptural Christianity.
Christianity means to follow the life and teachings of Messiah Yeshua who was GOD's anointed principle agent while Catholicism follows the traditions and teachings of men.
At the time that the canon of Scripture was set forth by Athanasius, there was no such thing as Roman Catholicism but Nicea set this process in motion and it took another 200 years before papal Rome took full control of the professing church under pain of death.
When I say professing Christianity, I include Protestants as well who have bought into the lie of the trinity but you cannot exclude the influence the RCC has had on the distortion of the true Hebrew Scriptures and their subsequent influence over professing Christianity and will yet have as they continue to push for a One World religion with papal Rome as the Mother Church until they remove all opposition to papal Rome claims of universal rule both spiritually and governmentally.
The remnant of true believers have the faith of Abraham and Yeshua and await the fulfillment of the soon coming Kingdom of GOD to this earth with Yeshua as GOD's anointed King of king and Lord of lords who will subdue all kingdoms back to himself then lay these kingdoms at his GOD and Fathers feet, subject himself to his GOD and Father so that Yahuwah GOD will be all in all. 1 Corinthians 15:24-28.
He will then take up his exalted role as our Great High Priest and lead us in the singing of the Song of Moses and his own Song of the Lamb in praise to GOD. Revelations 15:3-4.
