2:38 not only a good feel move but also incredible dance moves wow. But seriously, the way you explained this, I immediately was like, Wow, thank you, Eric. Man, this feels good. It was the final crunch I needed.
One of the best video I have seen, explaining the hip rotation, shoulder turn and rt arm movement so clearly. Thanks a lot, very helpful, saved it for reference.
This was spot on for me...thanks for posting this as I was struggling from coming too far inside and too steep. For me, this is similar to skipping rocks across a pond of water...to get the skimming action for the rock, I have to bend my right shoulder down as my hips are opening. It seems to translate that move to a golf swing pretty well.
5:40 wow, this is was a eureka moment for me right here. The feel to rotate your femur / knee out to initiate the swing really helped a ton! This is what separates you from other online instructors - you really know how to explain how to 'dynamically' get there where others just tell you to get there which is a huge difference. Thank you so much! Best online instructor out there right now :)
I am Japanese. There are not many videos on hip turn in the lessons around me, so I am trying to make my swing with the help of people from overseas. This video makes me want to play golf as soon as possible! Thank you!
great detail thanks Eric. Everything comes back to the left hip in downswing. I struggled for many years with HOW to do this move until recently through much trial and error, i FOUND the KEY(FOR ME). As I'm completing the backswing i concentrate on moving my left groin. If i don't feel slight discomfort in the groin i know I've failed. Would love your comments Eric
This is finally what helped my cast. I received the advice to fire my hips which still resulted in my cast because I was still firing my arms and hitting at the ball. I saw Justin Roses's drill of moving the lower body and keeping that top-of-backswing feel and man did it work. I'm finally not hitting at the ball and I have correct sequencing. I don't even have to think about my arms in my swing because my body does the work
This really really helped me, easy to understand, brings out a different level of clubhead speed once you match up the speeds between upper and lower body. Thanks!
Wonderful clear complete explanation of this extremely tricky part of the the golf downswing. So much talk about speeding up the arms from the top by many instructors. Or as Ledbetter taught back in the day the shifting and turning of hips will do everything includingsquaringtheclubface. Which couldnt be further from the truth. and wrecked my game for a lifetime. Thanks Thanks Thanks for this knowledge and continued commitment to excellence.
Booya! Another classic with a eureka moment in there. Awesome job. This is a perspective I've never seen before and it makes a hole bunch of things click together in my mind. Thanks Eric!
That is one amazing video.. my coach is pushing me to have the left hip up and now I can’t get the proper turn .. but I can create a push draw all day go.. keep these videos coming ..that one needs to be slowed down and broken into many parts ..because you get it .. the ball is gone..thanks
Thanks Eric, those videos with you and Trevor are great. To slow the arms I like a feel of my left arm staying in contact with my left pectoral muscle as long as I can as I start the swing. Thanks again.
Had an awful time trying to time my hips and hands, either my hands were way ahead (hook) or my hands were way behind (fade). This video helped me synchronize the two, which I had an awful time trying to do consistently. Thanks great video
Thanks again Eric! I love your videos and your simple fact based instruction. I have been practicing this separation, shoulder down, hip turn for some time. I’m pleased to say it’s been making a huge difference to my game and confidence. Your video gives me a great breakdown of the swing and that helps me to better understand why things go wrong. Bravo and thanks for putting this out and helping this hack.
Great visual Eric. That left leg down and bowing gives a clear picture for staying down and forward thru the swing. Could watch it continually to re-enforce the image. A good way to slow me down. Thanks-Russ
Last golf game I was getting my right shoulder down, but was having trouble hitting the ball. I know I was not getting lower with my body and could not figure it out. So with this, just keeping everything else, I can bend the left knee as I start, then it should all flow. Can’t wait to go our and practice this on move. I’m so close. Thank you.

Hey Eric, found the videos by chance but I really like the style of presentation 👍👍. Here’a a question so many great videos but which do I need and in what order of priority? How do I figure that out?
Glad you enjoy the videos, Brian! Work with a great coach to put a practice plan together for you based on your main 1-2 priorities! We'd love to work on your game together at www.CogornoGolf.com! We will do a full analysis + custom practice plan and guide you towards your goals👊 Hope to see ya there!
Great video. I have the hip turn down perfectly on both sides. That right shoulder tilt is the part I have trouble with. The drill with the alignment sticks is going to be my daily drill for the next few months
Things are going in a good direction. I'm a high handicapper(23.6, average 100 for 18 holes). I shot a 40 on a 9-hole par 35. 3 pars, birdied the par 5 and my "bad" hole was double Bogey on the ninth due to a three putt. Suffice it to say your videos and drills are helping. TY for the content.
Hi Eric, great video - very clear, concise and in a language that is easy to understand! You always have such excellent balance during your follow through. I notice you seem to post on the outside of your lead heel. Is that the goal - to rotate through the shot and have your weight on the outside heel of your lead (left) foot? Thanks, Russ
Thank you, Russ! Most golfers, if they have good rotation, will actually have their weight/pressure in the feet be on the outside/front part of the lead foot at the finish position as you mentioned (this is not a requirement...but just a piece)
This great, thanks Eric. Having tried this with only partial success before would you advocate consciously pulling the lead knee towards the target at the initial stage of the downswing?
Thanks! The lead knee does need to work forward (as a result of the forward slide/lateral motion of the hips)...whether you need to FEEL this or not is hard to say without seeing your swing on video. Hope this is helpful!
REALLY great explanation. Covers just about everything. People might also need to know where the arms need to be just before this, as if the arms are too high.. Well.. You know...lol. Also my question is.. Is this also what checks the arms a bit so you can release? I've got 25 years of dragging the handle to the left side of the body and I'm realizing it's more the opposite... It's releasing on the right side of the body and the pivot brings it around.. Hands on the left side of an optical illusion from a face on view while open. This is way too long. "Checking the arms so the wrists can release."?...lol
Great Eric. So it looks like Peter Malnatis left Hip. He brings the left hip extremely out and has much crunch. (must be not so extremely later). I understand. The timing is important. To combined the crunch with the slower arm constructions. It must goes at the same way and timing. Thank you, Erich
Great video Eric. I have a question about it. I’m this video you talked about hips going down and around and in another video you talked about hips going forward and trying to get the lead hip up against an alignment rod. Can you please clarify this for me because hip rotation is one of the biggest things I need to work on. Thanks!
Hey! Yep....they are all the same thing. All we are saying here is to keep the lead side hip down in the first part of the downswing. Its still moving forward toward the target....you want to learn to BLEND to rotation, shift and extending. This is just ONE feel to help those who need more of the rotation part
Wow this is really helping my with the timing. I’ve been able to get to most of the checkpoints but feel like i was scooping as I feel like I should be getting at least an extra 20 yards on my Irons. It was making me off balance at the end of swing. This has me swinging down steeper and coming up high at the end. Another problem I have is that the swing I produce at home I can’t replicate at the range? I think due to all of the people and the mats I get tense and try and hit as hard as I can every shot. Anyone ever have this issue and what did you do about it?
Glad this one helped! Always practice with a ball...exaggerate 100x more than you think...go as slow and short as you need to perform the motion perfectly...always film yourself and check video after each swing and adjust if needed. Those principles should get you started on the right track!
Love your video lessons, I subscribe and watch them all the time. Is it possible for you to put up a “room divider” or some other kind of background so I don’t see the other people on the range? Yeah I know I’m supposed to be watching. You but…

How does this relate to the bowler drill? I am confused. Bowler drill teaches to focus on the shoulder and keep the trail hip quiet and back…and that works for me. Are they both right or?
Hey! Yep they are just different drills designed to go different things. This is designed for more pelvis rotation relative to arms Bowler designed for the opposite really....to turn your upper body AGAINST hips and getting trail shoulder forward. Its designed to increase upper torso rotation and decrease tilting back too much.
Eric I would love to have an in person lesson with you in Bethlehem this summer. I have tried to sign up several times, but it appears you don't have any availability. Is this the case?
Hey Eric, This might get a little long winded and I apologize. Have been a fan of your videos for quite a while, you're very well spoken, easy to understand, and give concepts that translate to our real world bodies lol Anyway, A little while back I watched (I *think*) one of your videos with I believe a guest instructor, where you talked some more about the hips and legs. I vividly remember a bit about the right leg straightening in the backswing to enable the hip turn, and in conjunction, enable more shoulder turn. And of course the corresponding straightening of the left leg as you come around into the finish. I found a solo video of yours about the hips, but this one with the guest instructor really stuck. Am I remembering this video correctly? If so, can you point me to it please? Keep up the wonderful work, I also really enjoyed your videos with Kevin Roman, about the different backswings, and the releases. As a tall guy, I definitely have an upright swing, and putting that twist type of release into play rather than trying to do something specific with my forearms or rolling things, has made such a difference in my ball striking in the ball literally jumping off the club face (all clubs throughout the bag). Again apologies for the length of this comment.. 🙂
Hey Brian, So glad to hear the videos have helped and thank you for the kind words and support! Hopefully one of these are what you are thinking of: ua-cam.com/video/TL6EspI3w1o/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/pPlAIUbGTOY/v-deo.html Let us know!
@@CogornoGolf Thanks so much Eric, had seen the second one but not the Tom Saguto one. All of these are really helping me to truly understand and feel what proper hip turn is, and I'm working on better balance through to the finish...
Hey Mike! Ideally, the shifting and rotation are happening together as opposed to waiting for one to be done before starting the other. I talk through the details/timing of this topic in this video! ua-cam.com/video/lSOHKUmLq7w/v-deo.html
@@CogornoGolf I was hoping you would say Florida. Boca is 3 hours away, but I may just have to contact you for lessons down here at some point, if possible. I’m determined to improve my game over the next year.

Long ago I rolled the club open going back, closed it coming down and played with my hands high like De Chambeau. Now I play from a more conventional position and only try to pull the butt of the club through an arc with no roll of the arms or attempt to either block or assist the uncocking of the wrists. My question to anyone who plays this way is, do you have an aiming point for where you start the butt and if so where is it?
@@CogornoGolf Downswing. I feel I need to start the butt of the club down at some target to avoid toe or heel hits and fat or thin hits. For instance, if I am hitting toe shots I try to pull the butt more to the far side of the ball. Are you focused on the butt and hand path coming down or the club head, and why?
unfortunately I don't think a discussion here is going to fully cover what you are looking for/need. I am personally not focused on any of that to start down. I would really need to see your swing on video to see what you are currently doing to say what YOU need to do and feel. Send swings to www.cogornogolf.com so we can give you correct answers
Hey Jim! Yes the important part is the TIMING and differentiating the HIPS from SHOULDERS. The DOWN part for the hip is just for the start of the downswing, the BEGINNING part, EARLY transition.....call it the first 1/2 of the downswing BEFORE it goes up....
Two things: first, this should be called the "Helicopter Drill" (copyright!) with the rods on either side of you. Second, you lost me (in the beginning) about dropping the lead hip and the trail shoulder at the same time. The more I drop my trail shoulder, the higher my lead hip gets. I'm supposed to be dropping the lead hip more around/back, right?
I think Eric was referring to coming into the downswing, keeping that shoulder down, while slightly increasing the knee bend in the left leg to keep the hip down, rather than popping up. That's how I took that..
Hey Greg! I hear ya....thats the move you need to learn then :) Just stand up and practice it like I demonstrated....you should be able to lower left hip (pelvic tilt) and right shoulder (side bend) at same time!
For amateurs, the downswing speed is calculated by multiplying the handicap by the speed of the backswing. For example: 20 handicap and 30 mph backswing- downswing = 600 mph. Slow down!!!🤣🤣🤣⛳️⛳️⛳️

How does this relate to the bowler drill? I am confused. Bowler drill teaches to focus on the shoulder and keep the trail hip quiet and back…and that works for me. Are they both right or?
Hey! Yep they are just different drills designed to go different things.
This is designed for more pelvis rotation relative to arms
Bowler designed for the opposite really....to turn your upper body AGAINST hips and getting trail shoulder forward. Its designed to increase upper torso rotation and decrease tilting back too much.
@@CogornoGolf thanks boss
Is the hips-leading feel the same for driver?
Yes! All clubs for this one👍
Eric I would love to have an in person lesson with you in Bethlehem this summer. I have tried to sign up several times, but it appears you don't have any availability. Is this the case?
Hey Jeff! Unfortunately all of the spots are currently filled but we can keep you in the loop if anyone cancels or additional spots open up
Hey Eric, This might get a little long winded and I apologize. 🙂
Hey Brian,
So glad to hear the videos have helped and thank you for the kind words and support!
Hopefully one of these are what you are thinking of:

Let us know!
@@CogornoGolf Thanks so much Eric, had seen the second one but not the Tom Saguto one. All of these are really helping me to truly understand and feel what proper hip turn is, and I'm working on better balance through to the finish...
If there is a forward lateral shift to start the downswing, the hip rotation has to wait until the shift is finished, correct?
Hey Mike!
Ideally, the shifting and rotation are happening together as opposed to waiting for one to be done before starting the other.
I talk through the details/timing of this topic in this video!

Does this move change when using Driver?
Hey! Nope, same idea. But there are some driver differences that may help you here:

You said that you’re in Bethlehem, PA in the Summer. Where are you during the other seasons?
Yep
We moved to Boca Raton, FL full time as of last yr....prob spend 8/9 months in FL moving forward
@@CogornoGolf I was hoping you would say Florida. Boca is 3 hours away, but I may just have to contact you for lessons down here at some point, if possible. I’m determined to improve my game over the next year.
I noticed that when you execute the swing properly, you roll up on the lead (left) ankle.
Hey William!
Yeah! Most people, if they have good rotation, will actually have their weight/pressure in the feet be on the outside/front part of lead foot at the finish (not a requirement, but just a piece)👍
This guy is amazing! (At complicating everything.)
Lol thanks for the feedback :)
Should it fell like im basically sitting down to swing?
Maybe a bit....but more about pushing your hips (belt buckle) forward toward target

Played today and started hitting fat drop kicks. Then I see Eric’s video. Perfect. Thanks
:)
I just need to get off the Videos and do the drills you gave me during my in person lesson.
Lol :)
Hey! Are you asking for at setup, backswing or downswing?
@@CogornoGolf Thanks
Golf: the more you work at it, the worse you get.😭
Facts!!!!
Lol edit: without having an expert coach to keep you on track with the main 1-3 priorities you should be focused on :)
It Can certainly seem like it
But unless you work at it mindfully, you'll never get better.
Word
Clear as mud
Lol sorry about that
I don't get it. Left shoulder and left hip has to go up at impact doesn't it?
yes it does. I think this move is for transition only.
Hey Jim! Yes the important part is the TIMING and differentiating the HIPS from SHOULDERS.
The DOWN part for the hip is just for the start of the downswing, the BEGINNING part, EARLY transition.....call it the first 1/2 of the downswing BEFORE it goes up....
There is also some FEEEEEL vs REAL there of course
@@CogornoGolf Yeah, lol there's a lot of that in golf considering you only have a fifth of a second in the downswing.
@@CogornoGolf OK, so it's up, down, up.
This explanation seems to contradict your video with Trevor where the drill is with closed stance and keeping arms in front
Just different ways to do it depending on where the player is currently and what they need to FEEL.
Hey Greg! I hear ya....thats the move you need to learn then :)
Just stand up and practice it like I demonstrated....you should be able to lower left hip (pelvic tilt) and right shoulder (side bend) at same time!
For amateurs, the downswing speed is calculated by multiplying the handicap by the speed of the backswing. For example: 20 handicap and 30 mph backswing- downswing = 600 mph. Slow down!!!🤣🤣🤣⛳️⛳️⛳️
:)
Hope this one was helpful, Mark!
Instead of "...slow down your arms..." why not "...don't use your arms at all..."?
Yep thats another feel that works for some! Same idea
Dont agree. Its all about the work you put into it.
Thanks for the feedback John!
