Cool stuff guys. Appreciate this a lot. Super timely, as I’m deep into trying to build a strategy, most-likely in ground blind, for taking my 11 year old on a managed hunt with crossbow, in September. Then will be taking the other boy on a shotgun managed hunt in October, no treestands permitted.
I have hunted deer with a bow from the ground with good to great success for more than 30 years and it is my favorite way of hunting, but there is always the right and the wrong time and place to do it. Knowing when to move fast and when to move slow, when to stop to wait for the deer and how to use the terrain while moving, are some of the hardest if not the hardest parts of ground hunting. It is extremely easy to second guess your choices all the time as your choices are so many and they change all the time. And you will make mistakes and MANY mistakes at the beginning as well. When sitting in a tree or in a blind, your choices are extremely limited compared with ground hunting and you have in reality made your main choice the moment you chose what tree/blind to hunt from and the number of mistakes you can do are very limited as well. I have done and still do rather much hunting from blinds and tree stands and specially from saddles, but after having done so much ground hunting, does hunting in other ways almost feel like cheating to me at times. All my bow hunting the last years is based on either pure ground hunting or a mix of ground and saddle hunting. I have not sit in a blind or a tree stand for some years now when hunting with a bow, but I have done so when hunting with a gun at times for different reasons.
I always say any dummy can set in a tree and kill a deer doesn't know you are there, but a Real hunter can ease around and find the deer instead of them coming to you. It sure means a lot more to me. That's hunting and not just killing
Best thing about hunting from the ground is you're never completely committed to one spot. If you see deer moving in a certain direction you have a chance to move forward and get ahead of them.
One morning I was face to face with a nice buck in this thick stuff. Sun was just starting to come up I was crawling my way to where I wanted to be and turn this lil bush like tree the deer was right there kissing distance lol scared that crap out me lol
I was with you until the shot distance point. NEVER shoot at a deer with a bow over 30 yards. Too much can go wrong in the time it takes the arrow to get there. I dont care how fast your modern contraption you call a bow shoots, its not that fast. I only hunt on the ground. Primitive bow and stone points. Have taken many deer, all under 15 yards. And I know many who do it as well. If you cant get that close, stay in the tree.
Ps #7 , crossbows have been used for 1,000s of years! For hunting and war! When i use mine and i blemd in and look like a bush and dont have to move its game over!
Ill make number 6 comment on this beast of a video........ You need a ghille suit on from head to toe!!!!!! Even slip ons over your rubber boots. Do this and you will double or tripple your deer kill count! :--------😮
Come to California and hunt public land not on the ground see how far that gets ya my family have taken all of our deer from the ground walk a stalk you try and sit in a stand and you will never see any deer 😂
@@cannonfbailey never have hunted d7 d3-5 I got a nice forkin horn on the 31 of aug with my bow I mostly hunt b zone but this year went with a archery only tag got it done in 8 days but n d3 good luck this year
@haroldmiille2016 congrats! D7 is pretty rough, like an 8% success rate. Seen a few does, and a bear with a cub, but no legal shooters yet. One more weekend...
Great info!
Train like you hunt and you will hunt like you train!

Biggest deer on my wall is from a ground hunt ! Killed dozens of does from the ground , over the years . Especially in the snow . ❤
My buddies think I’m weird but I smell deer a lot of times before I see it…
What exactly are you smelling or think you are smelling?
Can definitely smell them before you see them
@@NorthernLivinInTheMitten I think it's the smell of their urine. I'm not entirely sure though but I've definitely smelled them before I saw them.
I can if it’s a buck. I can’t describe the smell but it’s not common to the woods

All my biggest bucks are from the ground and it's a lost art... i ground hunt and have been very successful !

You don't kill big bucks from the ground unless your name is Fitzgerald
I’m no Fitzgerald but every buck I’ve taken has been on ground no further than 60 yards. My biggest buck was less than 10.
I do it all the time. Natural cover and some knowledge of thermals and wind it's not that difficult
I killed my first deer with a bow on the ground at 10 yards. The lost art of still hunting is the way to have success on the ground. 🦌🤺

How do you ground hunt in East Texas woods with all the leaves on the ground.
Very slowly. And pick a dewy morning.
My cousins 2007 Toyota tacoma has killed so many deer from the ground!!!!
idk what kind of deer you hunt, but i cant even get goosebumps without spookn a doe lol
I killed my biggest buck on the ground, be aggressive, and hunt big properties
Dude, thank you for proving you can rattle bucks in with a set of 1.5 year old antlers. I laugh at the guys that wanna carry around a 140” set lmao

Concealment
Wind and Curiosity works best also . Think like a deer, move like a deer. Come here deer.

I own 6 crossbows ❤
Same goes for a bow.
Two colors work best.
The Indians knew this.
I killed 60 deer from the ground i hate tree stands i think they are dangerous seen too many injured hunters from tree stands
Ill make number 6 comment on this beast of a video........

If I take 5 deer a year from the ground, can I take 15 with out breaking tx laws?
Come to California and hunt public land not on the ground see how far that gets ya my family have taken all of our deer from the ground walk a stalk you try and sit in a stand and you will never see any deer 😂
There are some places in D7 that made me think about picking up a saddle set up hahaha
