I agree with the “getting out after work even for 45 minutes”! I did that last year, October 27th, sat for 1 hour after I got off work at 4, and shot a 150” 10 and I’d never seen him before

I hunt the rut hard in Wisconsin, I save up my time away from the family to get out during the best time of the year. I tend to hunt the rut so hard that I become physically exhausted. In the past couple of seasons, I have bounced from state land to private land trying to hunt the best sign/activity which leads to my exhaustion. I tell myself every year, that I should just sleep in some days and get out there mid-morning, a couple hours after daylight and sit the entire day. It never fails though, I still get up, half asleep and start driving out to the property I'm hunting that morning at 430 AM. One of these years I'll listen to my body!

Follow the minor and major feeding times. It will change your perspective. Just get on your stand 1 hour before they are up and feeding.

Got home at 430 PM this year. Had my stuff in garage. Threw it on and got into stand at 445 PM. 4 does came through at 455 PM. Monster 8 came in right behind them. Stayed at 60 yards no shot. They disappeared and I used grunt and hit can call once. 10 minutes later he came on a line within 35 yards into my shooting lane. Smoked him. He’s a 140+ class deer, 23 inch spread. Never seen him before on the property or on my cameras. Best deer of my life. Hunt when you can in the RUT. It does work!

I am a paraplegic hunter here in Maine. (Maine North Woods Hunter) . I believe there are instances that will happen in different regions of the country and each state that play major roles in this thought process. In Maine, we have low deer densities and tons of thick woods to hunt them in. Being a paraplegic, I have to do a lot of my hunting before the season begins. I have to search for places like you described and then hope that they produce during the season. I would have had a hard time deciding to go to another location if I had put the work in and seen the sign. In the RUT, the deer honestly can be anywhere, so being patient is something that takes time and practice. In Maine, we also get a lot of snow, and if that happens early in the season, the deer start to move closer to their wintering yards. This will also throw a wrench into the plan as well. One of the many reasons I love hunting deer is that you are always changing plans and trying to figure out what is happening. With Weather, seasonal food, cover, hunting pressure, and the RUT, there are so many constant factors constantly changing it is very hard to try to pin an animal down into a certain spot. It sure is fun trying, though. God Bless, and Good Hunting to you!

In the Northeast I go by Nov 7th as the peak of seek and chase, +/- five days. If you have limited hunting time available, out of those 10 days, pick the best weather and wind for your stand location. Coldest temperature, low wind, or pressure drops from incoming weather changes and fronts. Warm temps will really slow them down, but when the temp drops again they will get active.

I'm soooooo lucky to have finally found where my deer want to be. I've harvested a fine wall hanger every year for 4 years in a row. Now I'm just trying to let them alone and harvest doe and see just how big they can get. This season has been incredible so far. The sheer amount of young bucks and bucks that I normally would harvest is astounding. The trick is being able to get in and out of your blind without disturbing the deer on your food plot. I can get in my blind before daylight and can glass the silhouettes of deer on my plot with my binoculars or back out late morning with deer still on the plot. It makes deer hunting/watching very enjoyable and very predictable on my 1000-acre timberland lease along an un damed and untamed river. Our rut has always been around the Thanksgiving holiday thru Christmas in the south.

I am 70 and in a club where I usually kill more and bigger deer than the others. When asked how do you do it I say you don't kill many in the camp and I tell them to look where other people routinely go and go somewhere else. Another tip is that if a hot doe comes by with a buck you don't get a chance to shoot or is too small just sit still. Her hot trail she left often another buck will come along later trailing her. Deer can be anywhere but probably 90% use the same trails or travel corridors. Learn where these trails and paths are and spend your time hunting them. Just because a stand looks good to you it might not be in an area where deer regularly use.

Yeah, I agree. If the deer aren't there or you aren't seeing rut action, you gotta move in. Sometimes you have small properties, and you can't move at all, and that's always a bummer. But if the deer arnt there you gotta move. I fully agree with this video. Look for sign and move in on em.

My rut vacation is usually November 1-15, and for those two weeks, I hunt from dark til dark. I only get down for an hour to stretch my legs and run some fresh scent. Most of my buck over 130” were killed before 9am, but my 3 biggest, and my only 3 over 150” were all killed between 12-3 pm. Mid day cruisers. I don’t even hunt in October, or rifle. I only hunt those two weeks, and I hunt them hard. It’s lead to success nearly every year since I started archery hunting in 2003. And I don’t shoot little 2.5 year old 8 pointers. Mature buck only for this guy. I don’t shoot doe or hunt any other animals. My whole focus for the year is on one mature buck, and those two weeks.

We hunt at different times but seems like on public land the deer that come out between 10-1 seem to be less cautious about other hunters. Also agree if it’s rut and you’re not seeing anything then get down and relocate because you could only be just slightly away from the “action!”

Definitely have an early cruising buck come through without shooting light. It just seems the bucks come around after the does get settled…. Then they flush/chase them , search etc.. fun stuff. * all about entrance and exit to your stand
