MacGamingPatches Has made a tutorial for running Last of us 3! Could you please check it? and can you run it on more powerful Macs? Unfortunately it was just prologue and it went on to gunfight or chapter 1 in QZ.
Yes, don’t buy a mac for gaming, but which mac to buy if you game 😊 MBP is a much better laptop than any gaming laptop for work and creativity, so being able to game a little is a big thing and much appreciated. Just got the M4 Pro-pro base model, just because of that.
I knowww every time I've asked about this or researched this I've been hit upside the head with "don't buy a Mac for gaming!" Like I get it's not ideal, but most of the games I enjoy are on MacOS, and these days late model Macs can perform surprisingly well. Macs are easily my preference over windows machines in every other way, so it's hard for me give them up just for better game performance 😭
@@MorganTheGorgon Yeah, sometimes I don't game for weeks or months, so if I got a gaming laptop or console, it would feel like obligation to do it more, to justify having it (I don't like having stuff that I don't use). I use my MBP everyday for other stuff, being able to game on it sometimes is a nice bonus.
That really depends on what you work with. If you work with some graphics related stuff or AI then a Nvidia ADA GPU will beat a MBP because you can use the GPU power.
Note that if you get a gaming laptop that of course gets more performance for its money (in games) but the special thing is how small and quiet it is for its performance!!! The m4 even fits in an iPad and maybe we'll even have the pro and max in iphones in the years to come - which would be mega performance for cell phones. A 4080, for example, is so much heavier and bigger than a minimac and much hotter and louder.
Honestly they're way more helpful to me than intragenerational benchmarks, I wish more UA-camrs would compare to older models, especially M series chips because of how long people are holding onto them because of how powerful they are. If I'm on an M1 thinking about upgrading, it's less helpful to learn about how the M4 Max is X% faster than the M4 Pro than it is to learn about how big a jump it'd be from M1 or M2.
6:35 Correction - the lower-end M4 Pro Chip is priced at $1999 and has 12 CPU cores and 16 GPU cores The version Andrew mentioned is the higher-end one priced at $2499 with 14 CPU cores and 20 GPU cores
Regarding Cyberpunk 2077, the game engine is apparantly scales extremely well with core count on X86. So if they manage make that same optimisation for ARM, the M4 Ultra would use all 32 cpu-cores (if it'll be 2xM4Max)
100% agree Mac is not your primary gaming machine. It's a computer with the gaming on the side and probably the last on the list, however things might improve in the future. It's great u have done gaming comparison of all M4 chips u have tested!👍

Hello, is there a significant difference in gaming performance between the different unified memory variants-48 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB-of the M4 Max chip with 40 GPU cores? Thank you in advance for your feedback.
As someone who uses and owns both Macs and PCs (Several of each actually). Honestly, if games were written to take advantage of Apple's latest chips the difference would soon be in Apple's favor and you won't need a power sucking space heater to have the best performance. Also, console gaming is starting to show it's age on current gen hardware. So I guess I would have to disagree with your first statement to some degree. We just need more games. That's what holds the Mac platform back for gaming. Then again, most Mac user don't care about games and choose Mac because it's better at everything else. I'm old, so not so much of a gamer, but it's nice to play a game sometimes on our superior Apple hardware. Currently deep into Cyberpunk 2077 and it runs great on my now aging M2 Pro .. and soon natively.
My video game playing habits are a lot like yours. I want to just play the occasional new game, but mostly I'm doing other things on the laptop, or playing an older game. At this stage, the year over year gains for MacBooks are so massive that it's kind of dumb to buy more compute than you need in the moment and in the immediate future. Thus, I'm trying to choose between the base M4 and the M4 Pro binned. I'm honestly leaning towards the base M4, as it seems like it runs games like Cyberpunk just fine on a resolution that is perfectly suitable for a 14.2" laptop's screen. How many FPS do you get on your M2 Pro in Cyberpunk? The truly interesting MacBook Pro upgrade will be the redesigned 2026 models.
@@Mads_on_YTI hope you enjoy your new M4 when you decide on the model you want. They are amazing from everything I have seen in the reviews. It’s so tempting for me to upgrade, but I’ll try to hold for now. In Cyberpunk 2077, running at 1080p, and pretty much everything on the highest quality I’m getting between 40-55 fps. That feels perfectly fine to me. The only issue is that when you enter a new area it studders for a few seconds sometimes. The great thing about Cyberpunk is that when the Mac version is released apparently it will be free to those of us who purchased it for PC. I believe they will do a great job on the port over.
@@lonnygallant827 Thanks! I just placed an order for the base M4 model, as I was able to get it at a good discounted price in my country, with a 3 year warranty. The binned M4 Pro would have cost me 35,7% more, so I just couldn't justify the upgrade. The EU is forcing Apple to add user-replaceable batteries by 2027, so you might want to hold out for the first models that allow for this, which is either going to be the 2026 or 2027 models.
@@mashirokobato5509 I do noticed this same issue, but seems only when I run Windows games. Let’s hope that’s not the case for the native versions of games on the platform. lol
I would just note that using CF cards, especially the JetDrive, is really slow. JetDrive is like 100MB/s only, other CF are typically maxed at 300MB/s. That's glacial compared to typical SSDs and especially the internal Mac SSD.
I bought the M4 Max 40 core GPU, Yes is expensive but coming from a Asus Zephyrus g16 OLED with a mobile 4090 $3,300 and a few Razer Blades RTX 2080,3080 price is not that bad. Plus this can handle Cyberpunk 2077 on battery mostly high settings no ray tracing at full resolution 70-80 FPS try that on a PC gaming laptop once you unplug it becomes a slide show. You can even comfortably hold it in your lap and not go deaf from the fans. Playing and installing Windows games could be a little more polished though setup with Crossovers, Heroic, and Whisky is a pain.
Thanks for making this. I'm looking at upgrading my 2017 iMac to some M4-series computer, most likely an M4 Max Mac Studio when that gets released next year, some time between March and June. Something to keep in mind about Mac gamers is that while we do like to play _some_ AAA titles like BG3 or Lies of P, a lot of us like to play less-demanding indie games like Civilization VI (and soon VII), Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, Frostpunk (1 and 2), and simulator games like Cities: Skylines or Planet Coaster (both of which have recently-released sequels that don't yet have a Mac version, but could be played through translation like Cyberpunk 2077). Would love it if you could do a follow-up video that shows performance of indie titles like these, as it could help folks who like these sorts of games decide if maybe an M4 base model is actually enough, if they don't plan to play any AAA titles, or if they should still get an M4 Pro / M4 Max for some amount of future-proofing.
Thank you! This is exactly the video I hoped you were going to make! I’ll be replacing my 2013 13” MBP with an M4 MBP, and even though gaming isn’t my primary purpose, I’m still interested in how well games run on the different models 😊
Apple can become the best gaming platform for mobile devices like laptops and phones. I am not saying that the M4 Max will be better than the RTX 4090 mobile (even if it probably can be). I am trying to say that Apple has sold similar performance to the top cards in much smaller, compact and more diverse form factors. For example, the mac is slim and super performant; you can do so many things on it, holds almost a whole day on battery; it looks like slim-shady back in the day, And if you are looking for introductory pricing such as M4 Pro where the laptop price starts at 1400, it is a very competitive price, at least compared to other brands like razer asus etc. who sells their PC with similar build quality and performance for 3k. Apple used to be expensive and only for selected people, but not really. I am considering purchasing an M4Pro for daily use, my work, and a bit of gaming for 2k or 2,5 if I decide the same model put 16 inches. If I had the same quality laptop, I looked at on the new Samsungs, Asus, and Razers because I like their design and the form factor costs about 2x the price, which is crazy. People can say what they think, but I believe mobile gaming is up to Apple; for example, new iPad can support AAA games. Look at the iphones that support raytracing instead of Steam deck Nintendo Switch a few years in the future, and we will all play on our phones instead; I believe this is the way.
I currently have the latest MB pro M4 pro 16” with the 20 core GPU. I run a third party fan app that allows some fan control. So far I can keep the laptop around 58-63°C on 1080p at 250-300fps while gaming on WoW for example. If I go up to the native resolution I can keep it below 70°C at 90-120fps. It can do anything I will need it to do even though I didn’t buy it for gaming. But I have to say I was surprised that it could at all.
Mac mini/studio will have upgradeable storage, supplier is almost ready for studio drives. buy base storage on those for now with plans to upgrade later on
Gemes got annoying in recent years where the state of most games that are published are not finished like: Steel Rising, Hogwards Legacy, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, Stalker 2 etc..
No mention of heat throttling with the 14” vs 16”? I remember seeing videos about the M3 Max 14” frequently throttling and tanking FPS after 20 minutes while the 16” would tank right through
I'd say important caveat, 16 is probaby enough for most games, at 1080p. some games at 1440p or 4k will definitely ramp up a lot. diablo 4 with highest resolution textures and 4k can use up to 24GB combined between app memory and vram for example. that's not even counting OS. Yep I push my m3 max pretty hard ;D
Would love to see a video on using Sunshine to host games on Windows and streaming via Moonlight to Macbook M4 Pros as I'm considering this approach with my next laptop upgrade!
Hey Andrew! I really appreciate each of your videos on game tests! However, I haven't found a recent video of testing World of Tanks, especially I would like to see it's performance on macbook M1 Max and in advanced graphics. Would be highly grateful if you could make a video on that or at least reply to me how good it may run on such macbook! Thanks
Based on your videos I am rather pleased that so many games can be run. As a casual gamer as long as the main games works, I am fine. Luckily I am playing with local llm and got a m4 max, so get the “max” fps with 64gb. Overkill, but look forward to see as much improvements as I have seen in the last years in games.
Sigh. It shouldn't have to be stated over and over again that gaming on a Mac doesn't have to mean gaming the NEWEST games out there. There are plenty of people who are into retro gaming and want to know how well this computer can handle emulated games.
How is the performance? Is it good enough for use? I am considering buying either a 64GB model or a 16-inch MacBook with 48GB, but I am worried about running out of memory (especially when using VMware). I plan to run Kubernetes locally (primarily to build some Helm charts) and would like to hear about your experience.
The best gaming experience I’ve had on a Mac is GeForce Now. At the mid tier for 1440p gaming, it would take literally over a decade to pay for an equivalent dedicated gaming desktop pc and beats any Mac in terms of performance and game selection.
Any suggestions of any cooling solutions for the macbook? How hot does it get? Because of the unibody, it seems like cooling fans aren't going to be very effective?
If anyone can, could you test how realistic it is to game on battery? With low power mode + medium settings + 800p resolution in Shadow of the Tomb Raider e.g. you can do sudo powermetrics in terminal or activity monitor's estimate, but need to be aware of brightness level
Does anyone know how well games can run from external storage? I'm planning on getting the baseline M4 pro with 512GB SSD and supplementing with external storage. However I'm afraid that if I install games on the external SSD it might lead to performance issues? Thanks!
I'm guessing that if I currently have the M2 Pro, then getting the M4 Pro will double my gaming quality two-fold? I only play Final Fantasy XIV and WoW which I run natively on both.
Question: the price difference between a M4 mini with the same ram and storage of a M4 Pro is $400. If the primary reason to purchase the Pro is for better gaming would it be better to just buy a PS5 (for another $100)?
A Mac vs PS5 argument does not make sense. If you only use a device for gaming get a PC or PS5. Or, get a deck and Mac like me to have maximum portable fun😁
Another very key and relevant discussion to consider is MacBook Pro Size. The 16” has a much more capable cooling solution and will enable the higher FPS values. The 14” cooling solution cannot keep up with the heat output of the Max chip under a gaming load. So even though you paid for a m4 Max chip, for example, you will get much less performance in the 14” chassis. It’s not worth spending the extra money of the m4 Max (vs the M4 Pro)on the 14” if you intend to game on it, and expect to get the best frame rates Apple has to offer. Don’t do it.
@@chidorirasenganz i had the m4 max 14” machine. 40 core GPU. i personally tested it. Real empiricists test. Under a heavy gaming load, like say shadow of the tomb raider, it just doesn’t measure up to the 16”, relative to the cost. The bottom line is For 8% more money, you get 27+% more performance. even the m3 max 16” is faster than m4 max 14” in heavy gaming. Could you link to a review you’ve seen of the 14”M4 max vs 16? That says otherwise. (In actual games not 3Dmark).
There are MBP users out here who use their Pro computers a bit more intensely than just MPB OSX users. A tiny percentage of users actually needs 128 Gigs of ram, but for those of us that do need it, we use both Mac OSX and Windows on Parallels. We split the ram and have both OSs running at the same time. Can you do a video where you're running M4s heavy on OSX AND Windows? That's the real test...
HELP! I am trying to play Cyberpunk 2077 through crossover on my M4 Pro 14/20/24 MBP but having some issues. I've been able to launch it and play Cyberpunk but my problem is that from time to time, or when I pick an item the screen turns black. If I move my cursor, I am able to get out of the back screen but it is pretty much unplayable. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Andrew please do a video playing one match of Deadlock on M4/M4 pro. I really would like to see the performance and compare to my M1 Pro 10/16. I’m getting some weird stuttering when using Crossover with GPTk (last release)
I get 123096 points in Geekbench 6 Metal GPU test on my M1 Max with 32 GPU cores. That is actually a little bit better than the M4 Pro. But the CPU in the M4 Pro is faster and M1/M2 also lack support for ray tracing.
None. As the Mac Studio with M4 Max and the roam for an amazing airflow will be the best. Especially I can hook it to whatever mouse, keyboard, and monitor I like.
Want want to be careful buying a M1 generation system now based on future support and longevity of the system. One might save a little bit but that system will be outdated or no longer supported that many years sooner than a M4 will be. It’s still a heavy investment and one that should be thought about carefully. How long that system will last should be part of that consideration. I would not advise to buy an older Mac right now. There is nothing wrong with them and some of us still have M1 series Macs that work great. It’s just that it’s still a lot to invest on something already that old. If on is ok only having it for a few years and moving on that’s fine. Just be aware it will be end of life three years before the M4 will be.
Just wrote feedback to feral interactive, who are the current publishers of the last 3 tomb raider games, and ask them to optimize the games natively, instead of the games using Rosetta 2, we’ll see what happens.
I dont game....but i use power hungry Photoshop/Topaz/illustrator and other graphics software. I'm on an Alienware 17R4 i7 GTX1070 7yrs old and it's getting tired, as the subscription programs are always updating their software, which is taxing my dedicated GPU. Perhaps a higher graphics card is better, the 1070 was 8GB.
If Apple wants to be taken seriously as a gaming platform, they either need to play nice and rebuild bridges with Valve and Epic Games, or go full-on competitive and create their own dedicated gaming launcher and storefront. The App Store is not a good ecosystem for buying games. To me, buying games on the App Store is like buying games at HomeGoods, and cross-device compatibility with the iPhone/iPad is not enticing to me as a gamer. If Apple wants me to break away from Steam to buy the Mac version of Death Stranding, give me a good reason other than "it's on the App Store."
I completely agree with you-it’s incredibly powerful and offers outstanding value for its price. The differences between it and the 16-inch model are very minimal. Personally, I also prefer the 14-inch version.
Correction: the M4 Max has 16 CPU cores not 14, sorry!
its fine M5 fix that. and make 100% money again 100% upgrade

You said base m4 pro but referred to it as 14 cpu and 20 gpu but the base is 12 cpu and 16 gpu… is that one enough? For 1999 or should i get the 2399?
Excellent video.
I remember seeing videos about the M3 Max 14” frequently throttling and tanking FPS after 20 minutes while the 16” would tank right through
Cyberpunk 2077:
M1 Max 32 GPU cores (36 GB RAM, 16" MacBook) - 41.18 FPS
great vid as always, do u have m1 max game numbers?
I'd say important caveat, 16 is probaby enough for most games, at 1080p. some games at 1440p or 4k will definitely ramp up a lot. diablo 4 with highest resolution textures and 4k can use up to 24GB combined between app memory and vram for example. that's not even counting OS. Yep I push my m3 max pretty hard ;D
What about the difference between m4max 40 vs 32 GPU? Thank you for video.
The regular M4 also works great on games.
Thanks
I do not want to buy a MacBook for gaming, BUT can the M4 MacBook Pro play Baulders gate
Honestly the 16 core GPU M4 Pro is the best price to performance ratio of them all for gaming and in general.
The answer is Razer Blade 16. Same build quality, same speaker quality, better display (OLED instead of Mini LED), RTX 4090 etc.
There are plenty of people who are into retro gaming and want to know how well this computer can handle emulated games.
which chip ran the coolest thermal temperature?
Where does the M4 version with 8 CPU and 8 GPU cores come from??
Base M4 iMac
Can you please test if stalker 2 works on mac? Thank you.

I would be curious to see how the base M4 holds up against the M1 Pro in 1440p gaming

What else can you get to play games at that form factor?
How is the performance? Is it good enough for use? I am considering buying either a 64GB model or a 16-inch MacBook with 48GB, but I am worried about running out of memory (especially when using VMware). I plan to run Kubernetes locally (primarily to build some Helm charts) and would like to hear about your experience.
I would love to see the M2 max Vs M4 Max gaming benchmark
The best gaming experience I’ve had on a Mac is GeForce Now. At the mid tier for 1440p gaming, it would take literally over a decade to pay for an equivalent dedicated gaming desktop pc and beats any Mac in terms of performance and game selection.
Do you know that with Heoric Launcher you can Play Games from Epic Games ? I mean without Crossover Bottle integration..
Is external storage in some way bad? Less loading speed or something? Which one would be best? SD or USB or TB?
how does silent hill 2 run on the m4 pro compared to the m4.
Не могу поверить, что кто то наконец выпустил такое сравнение. Огромное спасибо!
I like what you are doing here but why leave out the similarly spec'd M4 24GB 512GB SSD model? I'd love to see it's comparison to the Pro for gaming.
Can you test how STALKER 2 is performing on M4 chips next time?
+1 for this
just hope for games natively developed for apple
Thunderbot 5 SSD will ge you full PCIe Gen 4 speed. Which makes a great "Games" drive

I have this one exactly
So for battery life is better, you recommend 12-core pro?
Crossover will be in discount?
Does anyone know how well games can run from external storage? I'm planning on getting the baseline M4 pro with 512GB SSD and supplementing with external storage. However I'm afraid that if I install games on the external SSD it might lead to performance issues? Thanks!
It should not effect performance. People use external or slower storage all the time for gaming handhelds
@@chidorirasenganz That's great to hear. Thanks for the response!
I'm guessing that if I currently have the M2 Pro, then getting the M4 Pro will double my gaming quality two-fold? I only play Final Fantasy XIV and WoW which I run natively on both.
Please, compare those with Windows laptops as we're comparing here gaming performance, it would be nice to see what's the actual level it has
Question: the price difference between a M4 mini with the same ram and storage of a M4 Pro is $400.
I would like to know how these machines compare to windows laptops with low to mid-range Nvidia graphics (i.e. rtx 4050-4070)
How can unplayed windows games on my Mac?
Could you make a review S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 how it’s running on Crossover, please?
Runs like garbage on everything apparently
Another very key and relevant discussion to consider is MacBook Pro Size. The 16” has a much more capable cooling solution and will enable the higher FPS values. The 14” cooling solution cannot keep up with the heat output of the Max chip under a gaming load. So even though you paid for a m4 Max chip, for example, you will get much less performance in the 14” chassis. It’s not worth spending the extra money of the m4 Max (vs the M4 Pro)on the 14” if you intend to game on it, and expect to get the best frame rates Apple has to offer. Don’t do it.
I’m pretty sure the difference in performance is no more than 5-10% and usually less than
@ it’s not. It’s way worse. At least 27 percent less FPS. I know because I had and got rid of the 14” max!
Yes.. more fans and larger thermals in the 16 is a clear winner....
@@j340_official from all the tests I’ve seen that hasn’t been the case
@@chidorirasenganz i had the m4 max 14” machine. 40 core GPU. i personally tested it. Real empiricists test. Under a heavy gaming load, like say shadow of the tomb raider, it just doesn’t measure up to the 16”, relative to the cost.
The bottom line is For 8% more money, you get 27+% more performance. even the m3 max 16” is faster than m4 max 14” in heavy gaming.
Could you link to a review you’ve seen of the 14”M4 max vs 16? That says otherwise. (In actual games not 3Dmark).

can you do m3 pro vs m4 pro
There are MBP users out here who use their Pro computers a bit more intensely than just MPB OSX users. A tiny percentage of users actually needs 128 Gigs of ram, but for those of us that do need it, we use both Mac OSX and Windows on Parallels. We split the ram and have both OSs running at the same time. Can you do a video where you're running M4s heavy on OSX AND Windows? That's the real test...
I went with your recommendation on laptops and went with M4 pro base
Try turning off FSR.
Imagine if Apple created a standalone GPU.
None. As the Mac Studio with M4 Max and the roam for an amazing airflow will be the best. Especially I can hook it to whatever mouse, keyboard, and monitor I like.
0:51 The M4 Max has 16 cpu cores not 14, 12 of which are high performance, kindly have awareness outside of selling crossover too for the community.
Still rocking i9 rx560 mbp 15 lol….still love it…of course I want the new m4 pro….but do I need it? Nahhh
How to download windows game?
What about ms?
Please play Minecraft on all M4 FPS test good luck have a peace life ❤❤🎉🎉
Just wrote feedback to feral interactive, who are the current publishers of the last 3 tomb raider games, and ask them to optimize the games natively, instead of the games using Rosetta 2, we’ll see what happens.
Please don't put a graph or chart of data on screen for less than 5 seconds. I need time to read it, thank you.

Can you test stalker 2 on m1 max
If Apple wants to be taken seriously as a gaming platform, they either need to play nice and rebuild bridges with Valve and Epic Games, or go full-on competitive and create their own dedicated gaming launcher and storefront. The App Store is not a good ecosystem for buying games. To me, buying games on the App Store is like buying games at HomeGoods, and cross-device compatibility with the iPhone/iPad is not enticing to me as a gamer.
If Apple wants me to break away from Steam to buy the Mac version of Death Stranding, give me a good reason other than "it's on the App Store."
