Dude. This is great! My 86 GT developed the exact same issue. Thanks for posting-tackled it myself based on your video and back on the road-along with 5th and reverse back in action. Nicely done!
For what it's worth, that large single plastic frame in the center console now has a 3d-printed replacement sold at Fiero Store. It's not cheap, but it's also an option if it breaks.
When I purchased my first new car 87 gt, it snapped a cable and when I got the car back it caught on fire. No clip on the throttle cable and didn't push it in the stay. I talking flames. It was fixed again. 87 is still my favorite year.
Took my 86 Fiero gt to the shop the get 4 tires mounted and a wheel alignment. When I went to pick up my car the car wouldn't go into reverse or 5th gear. I got very frustrated and asked them what they did. The mechanic said he couldn't get it into reverse when he first moved the car and it feels like he broke it altogether. Either way it's most likely the linkage altogether. I want to believe it broke when they lifted the car for the first time in years. The car has 38,000 miles on it and was sitting in a garage for a long time before I bought it. Do you think it could have broken on the lift or do you think he forced it too hard trying to get it into reverse? They are a very reputable mechanic and my best friend's dad recommended them (he takes his firebird and old stingray Corvette to them when he needs work done). I don't ever want to accuse someone of breaking the car, but reverse and 5th worked perfectly fine before I took it to the shop.
When my car (86 with a Getrag 5-Speed) has trouble getting into reverse, it is usually a sign that there is something wrong with the hydronic clutch system. Bad Slave/Master, low fluid etc...
Sorry, terrible video. You skipped steps like removing the select linkage at the shifter, then you went super fast forward on the tough parts - like getting the cable out of the car. I have to give you a dislike.

Such a fun job

3:42, yeah I meant shifter linkaging, not throttle

This is a problem I have to tackle this winter. You make it look easy. BTW, where did you get the nice shifter knob?
Thanks!

I found a free car wash from 1999 in my driver door pocket lol
How long did this take you?
A few hours
Would have cut it half. When you put it back together the cut would be hidden
Sell me your seats 😊
