This is a traditional song. There are hundreds of versionsl of John barleycorn sung over the centuries. Steve Linwood also performs this song with his daughter Lily. Had a lump in my throat. What a talented family.
If you like this, you'll love the exquisitely recorded release on SonoLuminus' "Barley Moon" 2017, which is an NIH certified cough free recording. Just joking about NIH but the included bonus bluray disc is nothing to sneeze at.
does a recording exist anywhere of this song pre 1970 traffic version? I presume it must as traffic must have heard it somewhere,, presuming they didn't learn it from hearing musicians play it.
Really like this version, the (what? bass lute?) rhythm is very propulsive without sounding just artificially sped up. Also, I've heard lyric variations, but this one (same as the Traffic one) is the most coherent in the storytelling. Nicely ironic, as all their efforts to "kill" John Barleycorn move him closer to becoming the strong drink that will defeat any and all of them.
I wish I could like this again every time I listen to it.
The song "John Barleycorn" always gives me chills (especially when it's performed with lyrics)!
Me as well.
The use of Renaissance, Baroque and Arabic lutes makes it particularly enjoyable and interesting!
New lyric to add
'Someone kept coughing in yonder crowd,
So Sir John, he knocked them out.'
Amazing guys,l like your version ,l ,have grown up listening to this track, great talent. Keep it up.
Very enjoyable!
Very nice version. Im looking hear all of the versions of this song. Winwood did a version I liked and I think is ver close.
Have you heard the version by 'The Horses of The Gods?'
Other versions: Tull, Omnia, Steeleye Span Dahm the Bard.

Nothing can beat the Traffic version from 1970 with vocals by Steve Winwood
I disagree. I love Windwood's voice in other things, but I think the John Redbourn group version is the best. It's all down to taste.
Mccalmans version
Great one!
This is a wonderful cover. Thanaks for posting it.
Great cover! It's great to hear a version that's not the Traffic version for once.
Also, who the hell keeps coughing??

Yeah, hilarious!!! Hope they include her in the studio version! Maybe with a little reverb added!!!
That is just a risk of live recording.

There surely must be. Let us know if you find it.
