- The Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony was made all the more special by a surprise performance from Celine Dion! The music superstar made her highly anticipated return to the stage at the big event on Friday night, marking her first public performance since her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis in 2022. She capped off the festivities by singing a stunning rendition of Édith Piaf's "Hymne A L'Amour" and belted out the French ballad, hitting every note.

To understand the importance of that performance, you have to know that Edith Piaf’s « Hymne à l’amour » is probably the greatest French song ever written. It is an absolute classic. The lyrics, the music, make this song (written in 1950) a true masterpiece of popular music. That performance by Céline Dion is high art. It is perfection.

As soon as I heard the first bars played, I knew Celine would appear. I cried unashamedly. She was incredibly spectacular. Well worth the wait and anticipation of sitting through the 4 hours plus of opening ceremonies .
Celine sang so beautifully at the Olympics it brought tears to my eyes. She sounded as she had when I had seen her in person and it makes me so happy for her.

I also have SPS, and because of that I have some understanding of what it might have been like for her to go up on that stage for the world to see her.
Doing that had to of been a stressor even though it comes naturally to her and is her beautiful gifting.
You see, with SPS, any kind of stress can cause the spasms no matter if the stressors be physical, emotional, mental, verbal or psychological.
The spasms can be real mild to so severe that the person becomes stuck in place for a little bit.
It might only be affecting a small area of the body at the time, or perhaps one limp, or the next time it might cause the entire body to spasm. It affects the body in many ways.
Sometimes it causes throat spams so bad that the person can have breathing issues until the spasms stop. There have been times when I have been eating, when the SPS starts causing throat spasms, and the food had to stay in my throat not moving down or up.
If I tried to swallow it or bring it back up the spasms would have caused it to lodge in my airway. I have to hold very still and not talk or make any vocal sounds at that time.
I have to just hold real still and focus on calmly breathing with what air is getting in and out past the food currently stuck in my throat due to the throat spasms going on.
A lot of clear flim will come up and out sometimes.
I cant allow myself to panic worrying that I am not getting enough air. Each time I have had my phone there with me and I could have dialed 911 at any moment or pushed the button on my emergency necklace if I feel like the food is going to move farther down and 100% block the airway.
And then suddenly it stops and Im back to normal.
I might look normal and not need the walker one day, and then all of a sudden my legs are going stiff and not wanting to bend well enough and so on. I now take the walker with me everywhere that I might have to walk where I dont have things to grab ahold of or places where there is no place to sit down. I am very thankful for these walkers with wheels and seats.
The SPS affects some of my smooth muscles as well. For me, it is the smooth muscles of my intestines and my bladder. The pain can be mild to so bad that it can be almost comparable to labor pains.
Everyone with SPS has their own set of symptoms and severity.
Type 1 diabetes is a some what common thing to come along with SPS at some point. I have that as well. Very brittle insulin resistant type 1 diabetes aka double diabetes.
I explain all of that just to try and show how difficult SPS can be and how much training, practicing, therapy, medical procedures, and strength she might have put into being able to get back on stage in front of the world and do so very well without a noticeable SPS event. I admire how much strength that took.
I am very happy for her. She did a beautiful job.
