    I thought owls were a symbol of wisdom, not the opposite (for example, an owl are the token animal of Athena, goddess of wisdom). They also represent vigilance. I think in the painting the owl what qualities that the parents lacked...both wisdom and vigilance in regards to the child. Thank you for posting on your thoughts on this painting...it is not one I am acquainted with and am glad to think about, despite the great sadness of the subject.
