As far as learning the language, one of the things that help me understand Slovak better is that nearly every word is accented on the first syllable. This is not true in English. Once you accept this, Slovaks speaking Slovak or English are much easier to understand.
In Central and Western Slovakia, the stress is always on the first syllable, like you said, but in Eastern Slovakia, it’s on the second-to-last syllable.
