Lighting protection needs to be assessed based on the property. A mountain top cabin with no trees around does not have an "umbrella effect" to prevent lightening strikes. This is the reason why commercial buildings being constructed that are the tallest structure around are designed with lightening protection. Even with lightening protection or trees that provide a home owner with the umbrella effect there can still be a significant surge into your power grid. Properly rated inline fuses and whole home surge protection is highly recommended regardless.
PS If you use metal poles for your ground based array you shouldn't need a separate ground cable as the array is grounded to earth through the pole(s). Just make sure you don't add any type of "isolators" that separate the panels from the support poles. Double check by testing for continuity to make sure there is no significant resistance.
