  • Detail of Knocklong Rescue
The rescue party consisted Seamus Robinson, Tom Breen, Sean Treacy (all 3rd Tipperary Brigade), Ned (Eammon) O'Brien, James Scanlon, J J O'Brien, Sean Lynch and Edward Foley (all from Galbally and members of the Galtee Battalion, Limerick East Brigade). A volunteer from Thurles Goorty McCarthy travelled with the train from Thurles to Knocklong. Hogan had a four-man escort - Sgt Wallace and Cons Enright, Ring and Reilly. Breen and Tracey were both injured as were Eamonn O'Brien and Scanlon - Breen was badly wounded. Afterwards, three men were charged with murder for their part in the Rescue, Edward Foley and two men who did not take part in it - Paddy Maher and Michael Murphy. All three were found guilty and Foley and Maher were hung in Mountjoy on June 7th 1921. Murphy was released after the Truce. (Eammon O'Brien and Scanlon went to the States in the Autumn after they had recovered.) The 'Big Four' spent the summer staying with various people in West Limerick, Clare, Cork and Tipperary. They spent some weeks in East limercick

The Michael Murphy mentioned above was my grand uncle. He was found guilty at the first trial in Armagh but was acquitted at the Court Martial in Dublin. He was from Knocklong, worked as a milesman at the Station and was there at the time of the rescue. I have also been into the station, having climbed over a wall about 10 or 15 years ago. The station building was full of hand written timetable ledgers strewn around the place and a couple of fireplace hearths appeared to have been ripped out of the building. A big shame when you consider what the country's politicians tell us we should commemorate. Shame on them - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing!

+Kathy Mayock - If you mean the people who were there at the time, they are all dead. Michael Murphy died in 1950. I don't know any of the people featured on this programme. Most of my family left the area in the 1920's or before. By the 1930's only Michael and one brother (out of 10) remained and they were both bachelors. I believe there are plans to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the rescue and local history groups are putting a programme together.

The station in Knocklong is sadly gone since 1969 last year i visited the site and sorry to say there is very little left of this historical site.the yard now houses a trucking company and i got talking to the owner [a very helpful friendly chap] some parts of the site remain but in poor condition,A plaque was erected on the entrance to the station .Its well worth the visit though.
