Love hearing the way you guys talk about Twombly. I came across him in the Philadelphia Art Museum (after running up the steps and throwing my hands up like Rocky-pre statue). I was walking through and one of his paintings stopped me in my tracks. The splash of red on a canvas of mostly negative space. As an overly rational person who has even approached music intellectually, his work bypasses my brain and goes directly to my feelings. My only regret about moving to France is that I will probably never get to the Houston collection and will have to console myself with works I can find here and my books.
I'm not very effusive when it comes to artists but upon viewing his work I could only mutter under my breath JFC. I am stunned every time I see his work. How does this exist?
I know the feeling....I think. Hard to tell if you are saying you love the work. Or you absolutely despise the work. Which in itself is the beauty of art. Some will love, some will hate. All that matters is that some do...
@@TyClark I would place him among the few lone greats. I am actually baffled as to how the work holds up so beautifully without the standard engagement of artistic aesthetics.
@@TyClark Ciao , just watched your video, which I really found informative, I am in Melbourne Australia, and we had a very strict lockdown because of the pandemic. I have always loved art, and been interested in it. I watch Aurelio Salvador, on Utube, that is when I found Cy Twombly, and took an interest, and when I found out that someone paid $70 million for what people in the comments called scribble. So I thought there is more to these paintings than meets the eye. So when I found out that he was trained as a cryptographer for the USA army, and taught himself to paint as a child in the dark. And also who he married, the mansions he visited in Italy, with the chimeras in the murals on the walls. I think his paintings are about bloodlines, and the result of the fallen angels, such as Leda and the Swan. This is only my personal view, but the Art work The Coronation of Sesostris, to me now is the most important Artwork, of the 21 st .century so far. I don't know what he heard mixing with the elite of the world telling them about old wooden oars, which I think he did as a cover, as I also think he might of been trained as a spy, as he went to Cuba. but if what the so called conspiracy people say is right, the 1920 business was planned, Cy might of heard something, and did the Coronation of Sesostris as a cryptic warning Sesostris bin the king of Egypt, is an archetype for the antichrist in the fundamental Christian circles. Look at the first and second panels, just how a young child would paint the virus they saw on TV. The third panel, yellow, who was blamed for the virus, and so on. until the last panel did have me baffeled, but I remembered the ending of the movie The White Rose, that is a top hat and a guilotine. Why that I do not know, but if Cy did try to warn us, of something, To me that makes it the very important artwork. Cheers, I hope you don't find this silly.
When I was 2 or 3 years old, my dad had to leave us to work abroad for some months. My mom and I, we lived over my grand parents house. Each week I had to write a letter to my father, one of these letters being kept by my mother. There were the same circles on a blue paper. The first time I read about Cy Twombly was in a book of John Berger, a collection of essays about different artist, Portraits. I looked on the Internet to see some of his works, because of his name ; it sounded strange to me. Unfortunatly, I do not have that letter anymore, and I can not afford to buy one of his pieces of art. But, what I like in Twombly's art are the mythological drawings and the poems skraches. I will follow your showtalks. Thanks.
I saw a video recently mentioning Twombly was in an ongoing romantic relationship with Rauschenberg (not sure how accurate this info is) but that Twombly quote seems to hold meaning about contaminated perception and the essence of seeking.

He did in his younger years, there are a lot of photos of Cy in black and white that were taken by Rauschenberg. They are fantastic.
What is the name of the artist on the left? I assume the man on the right is on the name of the channel.
