As a home owner with limited mechanical abilities I’ve always just bought new blades, but now I’m going to try sharpening my own with this method. I have all the tools I just needed the knowledge, thanks !
72 yr old female here...I'm going to sharpen a blade before I mow this year. Thanks for teaching me how. I already have everything I need in the workshop.
Hi Johnny! Have used everything from grinding wheels to files and after watching this picked up a 40g disc and sharpened up my mulching blades. Flexibility was great, put a great edge on and am having great results. Thanks for the tips and tricks👍🏼
The lower side is heavier. It's heavier for a reason... I'm sure it was an honest mistake. It happens to me all the time. On a side note. I learned a trick about sharpening blades that are already being used. You can take a marker and mark the side you're sharpening. That will let you know how much of the blade and the angle you're approaching the blade at.
I love the flap wheel like this. Does a great job sharpening. I usually make a pass or two on a new blade. As far as balancing goes. I find once I have balanced it, if I make equal passes on both side it is very close for the remaining life of the blade.
Thank you mr Jonny for teaching us how to save time and money, I asked you about sharpening blades and hedge trimmers a couple weeks ago and you got it covered in no time I really do appreciate it and will put it to work right away!
A home owner here. I recently put 2 new blades on my lawn tractor for the first time and 1 on my lawn mower. Did not pre-sharpen them, but I got to thinking if I should or not which brought me to this video. I am going to pull the blades off and sharpen/balance them before the grass gets to cutting height. Thanks
Following up on this video-2 months later checking the blades and hit 'em again though they didn't show much wear at all. This method works and keeps a good edge!
Cool Video, as a turf teacher that's how we sharpen and balance our blades, but.... Golf Course Super intendents, and some other guys like to use fancy grinders and balancers that I honestly feel is overkill. for Regular lawn care, residential or just your own yard, this way is plenty sufficient enough. Now I use reel mowers on our putting green and driving range, but on our regular centipede/st. aug/ bahia, even most bermuda and zoysia, I have never had a problem with shredding, or discoloration from sharpening the way you do it Mr. Johnny. Thank you, Zach from Mobile Alabama
Thank you sir, as someone in the business I’m looking for ways to properly sharpen blades. Using a bench grinder is difficult to keep the factory edge. Found out from our exmark mechanic I’ve been doing them wrong just sharpening the edge 😬
I sharpen my blades the same way. I did buy an All American Sharpener. It basically holds the blade at the perfect angle and it’s made to use with your angle grinder.
I generally just slap new blades right on the mower. And I use a bench grinder I have at home to sharpen blades. Bad me, I do not balance. I do like the idea of having the portable grinder to sharpen blades out on the job though. Good video! Middle of February, and here in central FL we are getting into the low and mid 80's some days.

Lol I thought the same as you guys, I asked myself “have I been doing it the wrong way for years now”? Lol 😂. It would only make since to shave off material on the heavy side to equal the balance but then I though maybe I have been overthinking this 🤪
Man I’m telling you I’m really liking the use watching you use these battery operated equipment. I’ve always said so way it’ll never last. After watching all your videos I’m definitely going to try the battery concept and see how it goes. No gas and less noise and less weight.
I have all the fancy stuff and also have the flap discs. Use them more then the fancy stuff. Just a observation. I also sharpen scissors and shears as a business including mower blades. On the first side you did notice the way you sharpened it with the sparks going toward the edge. On the second side you reversed it so the sparks are going toward the top/thick of the blade and that is correct. Here is why. In your first side you are creating a burr on the bottom edge of the blade so if you dont remove it its not as sharp as it could be but the goal is not to touch the wrong side. On the second side your making the burr go toward the top/thick portion so the edge is sharp no need for removing a burr and that would be correct. You knew you would get a guy like me right haha. Just sharing no worries it all still cuts grass just not hair.
I have the same Milwaukee angle grinder and I believe I have an 80 grit flap disc. I get my blades so sharp you can pretty much shave with them. I love it. So fast and easy. Great video boss!
what model milwaukee is it and also if someone could send me the link to that type of disk in the video that would be great. Also what type of table was that as far as what was being used to sharpen blades on
I use the same thing. Electric Grinder with 40 grit flap disc or Tigers Paw. 🐅🐾 I take off just enough to remove the paint on new blades as well and use a 5 gallon bucket in the field when needed. 👍 Good video, I'm getting antsy. 😄
Check out the all American Sharpener. It’s made to use with the grinder and allows you to get super fast and accurate angles. Can bolt it to your workbench or use in the vise. Couldn’t be happier with it!
I know this is from 2020... the flap disk is the way to go. Take your time and try to maintain the 30 degree angle, which is what most, (but not all), blades call for. Balancing the blades is also important as well as sharpening a new blade. In my experience, they are dull when sold .
Ya, I've been using cutting blades(you call them stones) in my grinders and have always thought they're eating away too much metal. This is a great tip. Goodonya.
Great video, going to try the flap wheel as you suggest. Should extend blade life significantly. I don't sharpen new blades if the balance is good, and put few cuts on first. I mark and mate blades to left, center and spindles and keep track of blade weights as they wear. I also stick to OEM or Oregon blades.
Great video Johnny 👊 I started doing my blades the same exact way last year. I used a stone disk too at first but, like you said it will eat up your blades. I don't sharpen new blades just, throw 'em on 😉 I need to do a better video on sharpening blades . I don't like the one I did a couple years ago 😒
I dont sharpen new blades, but the big reason to use a flap disk instead of a hard grinding wheel is heat, as with light pressure the flap disk will not get the blade too hot, this will not alter the strength of the blade edge. I also touch the bottom edge just a tiny bit to remove any burr. For blades with a star centre, use a piece of round bar to balance on.
I know this is off topic, but i just saw on your shelve the oil filters facing up with the opening up. Maybe put them in bags or face them down on a flat surface that way nothing can fall inside. Mike Detailed Lawn Care Service LLC Wisconsin
I like to get mine razor sharp with the stone wheel then clean up with the flap disk. Always been told I’m doing it wrong when I get it that sharp because it’s easier to chip but I don’t see how else you’d do it and I like the cut quality
Would the 40 grit take too much metal off ? Great video and has encouraged me to sharpen my own thank you . I have 120 grit disc but haven’t been confident. Will have a go 👍🏼
I sharpen my brand new blades - ever since I bought a new blade and the grass heads looked like I mowed with the old one. For some reason new blades need to be sharpened or they don’t cut as clean. 10 minutes you spend grinding will be worth the clean cut every time.
I use the 40 grit, then switch to a 100 or 120 grit. It only takes a few seconds to change to a different grit. I really doubt it makes a difference, but the 120 grit makes the blade look nice.😊
I don't sharpen new blades. I do use the same method. It is good to do it out of the shop. The dust will cause metal to rust that it lands on. Another safety tip is to make sure flammable stuff is out of the way of the sparks. Good video Johnny !
