Coming from london john would have known Janet street porter was probably the most punk journalist of the day which is probably why johnny went easy on her
Janet was exceedingly rare among interviewers at the time in that she met the artists on their level. Too many reporters and interviewers were either antagonistic to artists or too up their own arses to do that. She was willing to banter with John here; to let the conversation draw out the answers.
I’ve always thought Janet Street Porter is more talented and versatile than she’s ever been credited for. She is completely unruffled and she’s one of the very few interviewers who broke the ice with a young John Lydon
This is a great clip. Not just because of the interview, but the area they are walking around. A very differnt looking Covent Garden in London. Looks like the place is still the original market rather then the tourist trap it is today.
What great footage of a young Johnny Rotten. He's very interesting, intelligent, talented, and was kind of cute back in the day too : ) I love his no bulls**t attitude.
He has always been an intelligent articulate honest person and this is what people didn't like about him. They treat him like an idiot or thought he was one...think again. Love him 💜
He was living in Santa Monica in the 90's when I had a little apartment there - one of my neighbors was his Personal Assistant. I offered to assist but of course no
... JL - what a gorgeous face, and an attitude to match. A TRUE individual, at a point in time when it was SO much harder to be an individual on the streets, nevermind on radio/tv - he paved the way.
'Kin marvellous. I had the very great privilege of chatting with this heck of a human being for an hour. I'm grinning like mad just watching this. Genuine, intelligent and just like me , always pushing boundaries and questioning authority..... Best wishes to you and Nora x
this is the most honest ive heard him be. usually in interviews especially the later ones you can tell he's sort of putting on a show and being an ass for fun
he was soooo handsome and also clever! There are so many interview he gave. I think he likes listening to himself, but he can use words really brilliantly.love him! Johnny want to make music--Sid in my opinion NOT
I love that he dropped in the 'They were more interested in the clothes, or the colour of me poxy hair'. .... Lyrics he was no doubt rehearsing for the soon to be PIL.
A little fun fact about Janet Street Porter, the interviewer here. She appeared as an extra in the 1966 Antonioni film Blow Up. She's in the scene where the Yardbirds are playing in the nightclub. A quick part, where she is dancing wearing a silver overcoat and orange striped trousers. She however, did not have hair that looked like rhubarb at that time.
Thanks for that info. She must have been very young. I remember the girl dancing because she was the only one, while the rest of the audience were comatose.
You are witnessing the beginning of the indie movement .Shortly after this he created Public Image Ltd. A company, not a band. Johnny speaks of the crowd only being interested in the clothes and the colour of his hair . Musing lyrics on the edge of making history again . Ironically many so called indie band have no idea of this . Fans flock to hipster chic like flies on a carcass. The bands put up production costs and give control to industry masters. Check mate rock and roll. So occupy ?
Thisis such great footage....it shows here again what a very special charismatic character he was.......Wished he had stayed more in "rock" music though; like the absolutely stunning "Public Image" track itself , instead of all that a-tonal introverted stuff he started to put out. _____While it's all very commendable that he never sold out and all that.... he always used the Pistols' legacy as his mealticket to keep on generating interest...in his PiL ventures....
Johnny said it was pointless to make another Sex Pistols album. That surprised me. In a time like this we need someone to spill the beans behind the government's doings. I do wish there were more people like Johnny Rotten, but not too many. There's not much bands who are strong enough to not accept awards, to not be on TV, to take on anybody, etc.
AMAZING! ive never seen a better interview. fucking brilliant! i loved how he said things out of random alot. how the camera was a cheap peice of plastic and her hair looks like rubarb! XD just fantastic. thnx for the video i LOVED it!
I want to walk down the street with John in his top hat. He is gorgeous inside & out and so intelligent. He has an ornery sexy little smile. A man so full of righteous passion, angst, dreams, opinions & poetry.
At this moment in time John IS ON AN ISLAND !!No band, deal , etc ..Fascinating time cap. in a Dickenson London that doesn't exist anymore , check out his tour of the city last yr , its posted ....
This is the first interview that I've seen with Johnny Rotten in his younger years where he didn't blow up on the interviewer. I like this interview.
he was between bands so he didn't need to put the act on as much
Didn't do Janet any harm either
Coming from london john would have known Janet street porter was probably the most punk journalist of the day which is probably why johnny went easy on her
Yeah this was fun to watch, as in not completely uncomfortable.
Janet was exceedingly rare among interviewers at the time in that she met the artists on their level. Too many reporters and interviewers were either antagonistic to artists or too up their own arses to do that. She was willing to banter with John here; to let the conversation draw out the answers.
I never tire of this mans honesty, intelligence and wit.
Trump supporters rule - he's one of us.
and humility
@@Kat.Evangeline he says a lot is wrong with trump
and he partly said things to wind people up
there's really nothing more cuter than this. johnny "rotten" is a sweetheart in the truest sense of the word
'Jimmy' Rotten , actually
The boy with the red trackee top is me at 8 years old .. Im now 50 years old
Lydon with this hat is fantastic XD
I agree😊
Johnny looks ace here
Johnny looks ace everyday.
So young and babyfaced!
nice to see johnny smiling and not interupting... Love you so much mate
I’ve always thought Janet Street Porter is more talented and versatile than she’s ever been credited for. She is completely unruffled and she’s one of the very few interviewers who broke the ice with a young John Lydon
"well i went to see half the world, didn't i? i thot that was a bit of alright."
aw he is so adorable in this, straight out of a dickens novel.
This is a great clip. Not just because of the interview, but the area they are walking around. A very differnt looking Covent Garden in London. Looks like the place is still the original market rather then the tourist trap it is today.
there is only one john lydon no one else could be soo down to earth, smart, good looking, a celeb, funny and a sexy voice all in one. :P x
An absolutely adorable (I know, but hey!) Rotten. Always liked and admired by me. You know, he's got dimples when he smiles. Incorrigable!!!!
by far my favourite video ever. johnny rotten might just be the coolest human in the entire universe.
I've always admired Johnny for his forthright speaking and his honest opinions..he says it as it is..
I wish more celebrities followed his path
What great footage of a young Johnny Rotten. He's very interesting, intelligent, talented, and was kind of cute back in the day too : ) I love his no bulls**t attitude.
Im just glad that after reading these comments im not the only person who thinks Johnny was hot...
He has always been an intelligent articulate honest person and this is what people didn't like about him. They treat him like an idiot or thought he was one...think again. Love him 💜
"Your hair looks like rhubarb"......no matter how many times I hear that it still makes me laugh.
I love the kids following him and hanging around him! 😊 that is so adorable! 🥰🥰
Jons the pied piper of punk rock...😎
i agree fully! he was very good looking! :D
My two favorite comments were the ones he said under his breath:
“Cheap looking camera” and “Your hair looks like rhubarb “.
Oh I absolutely love this video. Johnny is so relaxed and friendly. Love the hat. And kids
he is so cute in this hat
this interview’s one of my favourites ..strolling around London like a dickens character. Love Janet too, she’s had such an interesting life.
Reminds me of Richard swivler from ol curiosity shop.
Young Johnny was fantastic.
One of the best interviews I have ever seen involving John!!
He was living in Santa Monica in the 90's when I had a little apartment there - one of my neighbors was his Personal Assistant. I offered to assist but of course no
u know for someone who was nicknamed specifically after his “rotten” teeth..he had a wonderful smile :) he’s just a little sweetheart deep down
And as always, a brilliant command of the English language!
... JL - what a gorgeous face, and an attitude to match. A TRUE individual, at a point in time when it was SO much harder to be an individual on the streets, nevermind on radio/tv - he paved the way.
John is always honest and witty in interviews! Good ol Janet street porter, this is thoughtful and interesting interview
Totally right. I love how honest and witty he is 🎶🤗
She’s a very talented telly person
Finally John meets ..questions he deserved. Do not die on me John!!!!
This interview always makes me smile. He's so cool and I like Janet too ☺
What a charming young man!
Gift this interview ❤
great interview. the only one I've seen where he isn't hostile and overly defensive towards the interviewer.
I could listen to him all day long
"how do you want to get malcome off of your back?" "kill him."
I'll watch this like 300 times! :D
So adorable! He does good interviews with people who aren't idiots
this his best interview i ever seen
How can you NOT love JOHNNY???
2:54 - ALMOST "Public Image" lyrics! Man, this interview is "wow" :D
This Man Is Still My Hero !
'Kin marvellous.
I had the very great privilege of chatting with this heck of a human being for an hour.
I'm grinning like mad just watching this.
Genuine, intelligent and just like me , always pushing boundaries and questioning authority.....
Best wishes to you and Nora x
So cute!
this is the most honest ive heard him be. usually in interviews especially the later ones you can tell he's sort of putting on a show and being an ass for fun
come now, he's always been one
he was soooo handsome and also clever! There are so many interview he gave. I think he likes listening to himself, but he can use words really brilliantly.love him! Johnny want to make music--Sid in my opinion NOT
Johnny Rotten you the real-life Mad Hatter ! :| your hair, your swag, your Disney's Mad Hatter hat ..
John you are a gem.
I love that he dropped in the 'They were more interested in the clothes, or the colour of me poxy hair'. .... Lyrics he was no doubt rehearsing for the soon to be PIL.
Watching this footage and seeing him with that hat, makes me wonder if Beethoven had this same attitude as Rotten. Both genius!!!
He had an impish charm.
Like An Irish leprechaun 😊
He smiles and looks different. , Relaxed and not so stressed
The artful dodger ❤️
from about 76-82 lydon was the coolest man in music. I think he likes janet. I remember london like that. Such a shame what they have done to it
I agree. London is an overpriced dump now.
I remember seeing this the first time around.
The Greatest Rock artist to come out of the UK...the Black inner cities love him
THE BIG BOOK OF BRITISH SMILES

@@johnsilva9139 Right! Your memory of the scene is spot on.

Johnny will always be THE BEST.

Johnny said it was pointless to make another Sex Pistols album. That surprised me. In a time like this we need someone to spill the beans behind the government's doings.

He was living like one at the time !
He was really good-looking too :D IF you ask me :P
After this it is only appropriate to watch Pink Floyd playing 'Echoes' live at Pompeii.
I want to walk down the street with John in his top hat. He is gorgeous inside & out and so intelligent. He has an ornery sexy little smile. A man so full of righteous passion, angst, dreams, opinions & poetry.
next question!
I saw this when it first came out.
His butter commercials are brilliant - bringing back punk into boring everyday life !!
At this moment in time John IS ON AN ISLAND !!No band, deal , etc ..Fascinating time cap. in a Dickenson London that doesn't exist anymore , check out his tour of the city last yr , its posted ....
