Fyi tv shows before 1997 in the USA did not have a rating system. I remember watch the series when it first came out and was shocked by the level of gore. The pilot episode in particular where the doll slashes the guys throat, nothing like that had ever been on regular tv before that.
Picked up all 3 seasons of the show at Rite Aid drug store the past few years.I loved this show when it first aired and now I feel like I really need to rewatch it.Great review.
I remember buying the season dvds back in 2011/2012. I think I bought one of the seasons at Big Lots if I remember correctly. I know one I got for sure at Sam Goody/FYE and the first season I got through Amazon. I remember watching the first season episode "Scarecrow" on A&E back in 1994 in the early morning hours despite not really knowing it was the series. Just that it involved a killer scarecrow that needed pictures of its victims. It was cool finding out it was from the show. I also remember being a kid in elementary in the early 90's and friends talking about the show and how it didn't feature Jason. I was really young, but I do remember watching the other Paramount show, "War Of The Worlds" and that one was much like this show and Freddy's Nightmares in that it pushed the envelope of what was acceptable on tv. I was really surprised at David Cronenberg's episode "Faith Healer" and how gory it got. I can't believe they got away with that on network tv!
Broadcast TV shows in the U.S. didn’t have ratings until 1997, so unless it had a “Parental discretion is advised” disclaimer before the show, you didn’t know what you were getting into content-wise. But since this typically aired late at night, I guess it didn’t need a parental advisory. I think most (if not all) episodes would’ve been a TV-14 if they had the ratings system back then. Anyway, I’ve got the big collection, but haven’t watched most of the series since it originally aired, I really need to get it out and watch it!
Thank you!! The series far surpasses anything done in "Freddy's Nightmares". I have to say that this is the first series I can remember ever getting hooked on to the point that my Friday and Saturday nights revolved around each episode. I was in junior high when I saw the pilot episode air on my local CBS affiliate, and have been a huge fan of it ever since. I've always thought that in the age of The Conjuring universe, where the entry "Annabelle Comes Home" leans heavily into the cursed antique angle and even has a cursed television and cursed weather vane (a very on the nose nod to the television if you ask me), there would be an audience ready to support an updated version of the series. However, I think it would be a great idea to have John D. LeMay back in the Jack Marshak role, as well as Micki, and a new team brought on to track down the items that we learn have found been released again into the world since the series ended. In addition, with the character of Rashid I think the show lost a great opportunity to expand the series premise to a more international one that could have allowed for a spin-off focusing on teams in cities like London or Cairo.
I grew up watching this series and was in love with the thick, curly haired beauty on the show... One of my top three episodes is the Jack the Ripper one....
The unofficial fifth book in the Eric Morse/William Pattison Friday the 13th book series acknowledges that Ryan Dallion and Steven Freeman are the same person.
Yes, this show was called Friday The 13th and it didn’t have Jason in it. Even with that disappointment, it’s still a great tv show just because of the show premise and how well acted it is. The first two seasons alone are the absolute best because the dynamic between the 3 main characters of Ryan, Mickie, and Jack is just amazing. Bringing in Johnny later just wasn’t the same. Idk why John D. LeMay wasn’t kept as Ryan but to me, him being written out killed the show. And had the show not been cancelled, I do believe they could’ve eventually tied the series into the Jason movies. Still, FT13 the series was way better and less cheesy than Freddy’s Nightmares. Freddy’s Nightmares only had one truly great episode and that was the pilot and everything after that was kinda disappointing. I’ve you’ve never seen FT13 the series, I’d recommend you check it out. Since there’s been talk of a new Jason prequel series, I hope they do an updated FT13 the series and somehow tie it in to the movies.
I remember seeing the first two episodes of the Friday the 13th series on VHS when i was young but i've never seen It since on DVD but it was cool that Fred Mollin did the music for it as i love his score on Friday 13th 7 The New Blood.
When cable took off in the 80s, the need for content increased exponentially, so syndication companies rushed anything they could find into production. That fueled the Twilight Zone revival, Tales from the Darkside, and the Friday the 13th series. Tales from the Crypt certainly had an audience, but that was HBO, which a lot of cable customers didn’t have.
Seek out the book Curious Goods by Alyse Wax. It makes up for the lack of special features on the discs. It’s goes behind the scenes and covers the show episode by episode. It has interviews with cast and crew
Thanks for the in-depth review of series. I have not seen the show. I had always been curious about it. If I were to buy, I would rather have the individual seasons. I hate those big cases. Whenever I get those, I transfer to standard cases and download covers or design my own.
I remember watching it on kplr 11 at late night weekends with gma back in the day then they just stopped airing glad I have dvd set, I wish this would get released on blu ray
If people could temper the expectations, it would be pretty cool if they could put together some sort of complete series release. NO it could not and would not be 4k late 80s tv shows were in no universe filmed to be anything remotely resembling 4k in any form but they could maybe put together some sort of respectable upscaled blu-ray release. I suppose it also depends on how well the series was preserved and how was it filmed
@lutherheggs451 Friday the 13th tv series complete set is on Amazon, and it's just a plain dvd release... I would waste my time on Freddy's nightmares even on 4k because I stayed up late to watch it on TV every week, and I only liked 2 episodes and was let down....
I love that show. I used to watch it as a kid all the time. When I first watched Jason Goes To Hell I freaked out seeing the dude from the series in it. TV shows aren't something I get so "physical media" about. I have a few shows, but not many. I've always been more of a movie guy. But this is a show that I would love to own because I truly did love this as a kid.
I love the Friday The 13th Series, would love to see it get some more attention. Thank you for doing this video. I will always say Warehouse 13 totally ripped off this show. I would absolutely love the show to get a full remaster even if it's just for streaming (although physical would be much better), I always hope Shout Factory would pick it up and give it a new lease of life, same with the War of the Worlds TV series from 1988.
They should've made LeMay's character Ryan from the show the same one in the JGtH movie. It's a good show. For my fave 80s horror shows, my ranking is: 1) Tales from the Crypt (but more 90s) 2) Twilight Zone 3) Freddy's Nightmares (yes really) 4) F13 the Series 5) Monsters 6) Tales from the Darkside (nostalgic and amazing intro, but I don't like much of the eps) 7) Amazing Stories (another great intro, some great eps, many blah ones)
I loved this show too! The first time I ever saw The Series was when it was on Sci-Fi and I didn’t mind that Jason wasn’t in it. I know some fans who trash the show because Jason isn’t in it but I love that it’s an anthology series. Great job Christian and ty again for what you do! Please keep it up man and keep being awesome!
I can still remember being so mad as a kid finding out that Jason wasn’t in the show so I never watched it. I still kind of carry that grudge to this day. How the hell are you going to name a show Friday the 13th The Series at the height of the popularity of the movie series and have it have NOTHING to do with Jason. That’s unforgivable.
"Money's still tight, I'm way less responsible" 😂 I felt this.
Loved this series growing up. I still watch it today. Fox was on fire from Friday the 13th to Werewolf!

I was obsessed with this show back in the day. Really wish it would get a physical media release that does it justice.
So cool that John LeMay from the show got to also face off with Jason before he went straight to hell
Remember watching this late saturday nites, and just recently bought the series .

I love this series, watched it all. My faves from memory were the boxing gloves episode and scarecrow episode

I thought Friday the 13th, The Series was a horror masterpiece. We need an upscale box set.

Yeah Robey was beautiful on the show and I still watch it and think she’s hot.
Friday The 13th The Series was AWESOME!!!
I forgot about this show, which I now remember seeing as a kid. I'm definitely picking this up. Thank you for reminding me of it.

Friday The 13th Part 8 1989 and Curious Goods 1989
As far as "it'd make a good show today"... The Librarians and Warehouse 13 are some newer shows that have a similar concept. Kinda.
I remember seeing the first two episodes of the Friday the 13th series on VHS when i was young but i've never seen
