It's hard to realize it now after all these years, but Bruce was coming in as the new singer of Iron Maiden when the Number of the Beast album was being made, so not only was he having to sing these songs but with a band he was just getting on with. I remember as a teenager growing up in the late 80's, with my very conservative and Christian mother, Iron Maiden was not only off limits in my house, as was 99% of the music of the time, but they were targeted heavily over that album and song in particular. You didn't see kids anywhere except maybe the occasional one at school who might have been wearing an Iron Maiden shirt, but they were always juniors or seniors and I was right around 8th grade going into 9th or so. Looking back on it now, and never really getting into Iron Maiden until later on (our local rock station didn't even play them, ever) it was more or less just coming across the music by accident that got me listening to them, and realizing, going back and actually listening to the lyrics of these songs what Bruce, Steve, Nicko and all these guys put into those lyrics, what utter nonsense the arguments were against the music. But still, if you ask people like my mother who will freak out if my son so much as mentions rock music in her presence, they think it should be banned, burned and done away with altogether. It's a damn shame such close mindedness exists.

Just started watching the video, but I have commented on this before and I believe it to be the truth that, if they had not released the song "number of the beast" and had released the album under a different name, they would have reached a popularity similar to a band, the size of Led Zeppelin. It's a myth that maiden had no marketing in the eighties, as some people like to say, but they were definitely given very little radio play, mainly due to this song and complaints as a result.
