That looked like a lotta fun Nek! how long were you up there? do you go often? I used to use a K40 mag mount when they first came out (cheaper than the 5k back in the day) now I have the Wilson 5000 mag. is there a difference with that center fed coil?
Oh yes it was fun. I’d love to do it again. This place is far for me, but I try to go once in a while. It great for dxing. The K40 is very similar to the Wilson 1000 because the coil is on the bottom. The 5000 gives you more gain (rx/tx) because the coil is higher. It is in the middle of the antenna.
The Wilson 5000 and 1000 will give you exact same performance with the same SWR... the diff between the 2 is power handling! The diff your getting on your test is probably a swr match or the antennas are to close and your getting directional! you can even tell by the needle movement on your radio there is a mismatch, prob a better match on the 5000. BUT they are both the same antenna, just 1 can handle more wattage.... but if your radio is stock then 1000 is way to go
The idea behind this video was to compare a base loaded antenna with a center loaded antenna (kinda) because the 5000 had that extension that makes it like a center loaded. It didnt come out as planned. Thank you for watching.
The Wilson 5000 and 1000 are not exactly the same antennae. The coil is bigger and thicker in the 5000 and that makes the 5000 with better Q Factor. If you want every bits of your RF to go out the antenna the 5000 will give you that extra little bit more. The price different between the 5000 and 1000 is not much so you buy once cry once and be happier much longer.
the 1000 and 5000 are the same other than yes the bigger coil to handle more wattage on the 5000! but stock radio they are the same performance!@@alexyu6928
Q factor?? wtf.. lol.. you should put that into the Chinese ad to sell them.. haha they are both the same gain, but the 5000 can handle more wattage! geesh its not rocket science@@alexyu6928
The 5000 is an improved version of the W1000/2000. It offers a larger thicker coil with an improved Q Factor which improves the overall efficiency. I am in the process of designing an antenna like the 5000 but with some additional coil tuning. I will share it on my website once its finished.
@@buzzie0047 the extension pole makes the antenna center loaded. The coil of the antenna is in the middle (kinda). This whole thing now becomes an antenna. It connects to the center conductor of the coax and yes it must be insulated/separated from the ground. I hope this helps
Thank you David. Stay tuned for more. A new video is coming out next Saturday. I will compare the Wilson 1000 with 2 Sirio antennas. The tornado and the turbo
I am brand new to the CB world and bought a used Wilson 5000 trucker antenna. Is your magnet mount a Wilson or is it an aftermarket magnet mount? I just bought a Sirio and hoping it will work like yours.
I would stay away from used mobile antennas. Most of the time people cut the whip to adjust the swr. It will work for him but when you buy it it might not work for you. Depending on the surface you are mounting it, it might need to be longer. Then you have to buy a new whip that is long enough. If you buy a new antenna you might not even need to adjust it. This magnet mount on the video is not the Wilson. But it came with this extension under the coil. Some models of the 5000 don’t have this extension. I think if it says on the package “mirror mount” it has this extension included
Also if you buy a Cb radio, buy one with SSB (single side band LSB/USB). So you can do some dx contacts. Every morning the skip is crazy. You can hear people even from Europe
Yes I bought a cobra 148 gtl. The Wilson 5000 antenna I got has a mount that would go to a semi truck side mirror. I need to figure out the connection between the antenna and the magnet mount. I see yours is Wilson, and connected directly to the magnet mount.

Can’t wait to see the antenna my friend. Thank you for watching..!!!
I've noticed an issue with a ML-145 mag mount antenna. Continuity between polls on the PL 259 on the antenna base. Should it not be insulated?
