How do you know what to shift to when you're reading the music?

Hi Bimba, sometimes you'll see -1 where the dash (the - ) indicates a change in position followed by a finger number (1, 2, 3, or 4) indicating the finger you'll shift to. If it's not indicated in the music, you can decide when and where to shift. Additionally, some music uses Roman numerals to indicate position, so if you see III this indicated 3rd position. Hope that helps!
