  • Amherst is a city in Lorain County Ohio. The first land clearing in the Amherst area was buy Jacob Shupe in 1811, Shupe built a log cabin in this clearing, which is next to a stream he later named Beaver Creek. This original settlement was on a hill near what is now Cooper Foster Park Road. Amherst is famous for the Sandstone Center of the World. Buy the latter 1800's Amherst acquired the title. Many of the early buildings are constructed of native sandstone, the quarries were also an Important source of grindstones. Amherst has some great history. I want to thank the ladies at the library for letting me video and photograph the older part of the library along with providing historical photos of the downtown. The Amherst library has the historical distinction of being one of only 111 Carnegie Libraries built in the state of Ohio. The Amherst Town Hall was built in 1884, the building material is sandstone. There was a Opera House in the upstairs in the Amherst Town Hall, in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The Quigley Museum was built in 1832 is one of the oldest sandstone buildings. The Old Spring was a major source of drinking water for many yeas in the 1930's. Amherst had a lot to see, there is a Sandstone Village I wished I could have went to but I ran out of time.
