Solarvox (or Solavox for the later models released in the UK by Comet) speakers have a poor to middling reputation. Is this deserved?
I demonstrate & compare Solarvox speakers to Pioneer HPM 110 speakers to find out.
The differences are obvious - but only at my end!
Playback of this footage while I was editing it showed the camcorder microphone just wasn't up to the task. It could capture treble, but not bass. So the boxy bass & treble light Solarvox speakers actually appear more even than they really are, & the very even & open Pioneer HPM speakers appear bass light and too toppy!
Moral of the story? When comparing speakers, use a high quality microphone!

Hi BN. Exactly right! The detail from the Pioneer is apparent via YT, and is VERY obvious in the room. And yup, the bass response isn't audible. This is because of the camcorder microphone. It's sensitive to treble, but is hopeless at recording bass. So the even Pioneer speakers appear toppy and the Solarvox appear even. In reality the Pioneers are even and open, and the Solarvox have little treble and boxy bass.
I've never heard of Solarvox but those Pioneer HPM's are probably one of the best pair of consumer priced speakers of their era. It was obvious how much more detail they could achieve in the mid to high end. It was less apparent that they had better bass response, possibly because of UA-cam compression or my computer speakers aren't up to the task or defining the bottom end. The Solarvox may not be as bad as they sounded in your room.
Solarvox speakers, are they good or bad? A-B comparisons ahoy!
Hi. Nope, but interestingly I have some HUGE (untested) Pioneer HPM 150s in storage, in bits. At some stage I'll rebuild them, and make a YT video of them! :-)
It's interesting how a new element in the audio chain (in this case the microphone) can change the bass/mid/treble bias. What it can't do, and what you correctly noted, is that the microphone cannot improve the resolution. The Pioneers have more detail, the Solarvox less, and the microphone cannot change that.
How about the Pioneer Hpm 500 ? Have you heard those ?
