To program your old banner you could use a virtualized instance of Windows XP (with VirtualBox or VMWare) and just the Com- or USB-Port passed through. Way easier to maintain.
Would mounting this on the FRONT of the car to tell the slow snowbirds from Canada that drive 30 MPH in the fast lane with their turn signal blinker on the whole time to get out of the way since flashing the headlights and tooting the horn at them never seems to work?
I was going to mount it in my rear window with message (TURN ON YOUR LIGHTS) to display to all those jackasses that drive around at night with just their daytime running headlights on and no rear lights. Seems several manufacturs like FORD light up the instrument cluster as soon as you turn on the key, and as it is getting dark they forget that their tail lights are not on. In canada we have daytime running headlights, so their headlights are on at reduced brightness, but on enough to see the road. Unfortunately when it is pitch black and they have no tail lights it is a very dangerous situation for anyone coming up fast behind them. I blink my brights at these idiots all the time, and they usually respond by tapping the brakes. One of the default messages on this is 'Check Your Lights" and it can display as a reverse image so the idiot can read in their mirror. It never made it to the back window of the car, it made it to my work bench to display my paypal donation page.
I have always loved these message boards. I've never owned one, but I've seen even bigger ones then this one, especially when I was in school (many years ago now). Do they make them now that change color, or can display multiple colors like they new LED solutions available now that do random color patterns ?
A lady was driving without her lights on. I tried to tell her to turn them on by shutting off my own headlights while I was driving side by side her car. I have HID headlights on my car so the message was pretty obvious. All I got is a finger through the window. Nice stupid lady.
hi there i got a dab fm radio do i need to connect it to a tv aerial or do i need something differat i cannot get a signal any advice please many thanx
Sucks to be you. I'm not aware of any apps for this unit whatsoever. if you look on my bench you'll see the remote for this one stuck in a plastic bag hanging from my bench so that I won't lose it.
I was following a car one time that was completely dark on the rear other than brake lights. I pull up beside it and the headlights are on. I got some weird looks from the driver as . I hope they got the hint because I never got to tell them what was going on. The other day, I saw a black car with no lights on. Then, I saw what neighborhood they turned off at. Probably one of those people.
You going to set the message thus... "If you can read this then you are too close back off oh and by the way turn your lights", Julian Llett designed and built something like this but he used 74LS** series to build his, It might be possible to build one with rude messages.
For the record I have put some 4 letter words in it, and it displays them just fine, so even though the manual says it censors words, it doesn't. I even saved them in the memory,
12voltvids Try running VMware Workstation on the Windows 7 PC. You can find ready-to-run hard drive images with Windows XP (or just install it from CD-R / image), and the VM lets you connect to practically any real device on the host PC. There's really no need now to run the older PC, unless you're into retro gaming. ;)
ElectronAsh Except that it uses both a parallel port port and USB port to program. The parallel port plugs into a dongle that has a security chip in it. That has a lead that has the USB plug and the other end a mini USB to plug into sign. Finding a new pc with a parallel port is a tall order and chances are a usb/parallel adapter isn't going to work with the security dongle.
Wow, that is pretty old-skool. :p Actually, I still have proper parallel and serial ports on the motherboard of my slightly older Q6600 PC. (on the actual board, so not the "fake" parallel adapters for printers etc.) You can still get them, but they are getting hard to find now, naturally. It's this board... www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-P35-DQ6-rev-10#ov I do have a serial port on the Core i5 I'm typing on now too, and I think you can still find proper parallel port cards for it's (one) PCI slot? I know there are other uses for the older PC as well, but there are ways to get the old stuff working on newer hardware, if it saves you having to maintain the old PC etc.

Too much work to run a virtual machine. I just fire up the old XP machine when I need to make changes to it, which I haven't done in over a year.

how do you change the text from lower case to caps my instructions are very basic.
thank you

Hi Dave, front window of the house with "NO SOLICITING" running 24/7 would work for me. Probably wouldn't stop some of them though. Regards, Dave
I want this for tailgaters and people who think 120km on the motorway still isn't fast enough and feel the need to flash me to force me to move.
The one that sits on my bench has a remote to flash custom messages. Your favorite 4 letter words are blocked!
@@12voltvids a simple back off or I'm going the limit or don't be a jerk etc would be good

The preloaded messages say basically that.
@@12voltvidscan we use a universal remote my friends
My top 3 I wanna put on mine:
1) Left Lane Is Passing Lane. Get Over!
2) Police Ahead
3) Your Light Is Out

How does this hook up to electric cord ?
I just have it connected to a 12 volt adapter.

Yes they make multi color message boards but they cost more than 30 bucks.
Thanks for the great review. Can it do mirrored characters so I can put it in the front window?
Yes

I had a similar LED display like this from MystiGlo for 6 years to show family events and it recently broke by a bad power supply.
5v regulator failed on this. New one in and working

I think number one was a Chevy. I know number two was a Dodge.
First one was a Ford, and I didn't get a close enough look at the second one.

Maybe typing in "AZZ WHOLE" will work.
You can sware on it. The instructions say you can't but you can type in anything in caps and it will display it. Haven't tried lower case.
