East Austin Succulents is a massive cactus & succulent nursery located in Austin Texas.
Your contributions support this content. It sounds cliché but it's true. Whether it's travel expenses, vehicle repair, or medical costs for urushiol poisoning (or rockfalls, beestings, hand slices, toxic sap, etc), your financial support allows this content to continue so the beauty of Earth's flora can be made accessible to the public. At a time when so much is disappearing beneath the human footprint, CPBBD is willing to do whatever it takes to document these plant species and the ecological communities they are a part of before they're gone for good.
Plants make people feel good. Plants quell homicidal (and suicidal!) thoughts. To support Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't, consider donating a few bucks to the venmo account "societyishell" or the PayPal account email crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt@gmail.com...

Hi Joey! I just sent you an email about the Texas mulberry (Morus Celtidifolia) and I wanted to shoot a ping on here since I'm not sure which you will see first. Let me know if you find anyone selling them, and offering shipping up to Boulder!
Love me, we have things to discuss
literally the only channel where i never skip the ads lol
Same.
Sheeeeeeet I scanned the QR code. Those mattresses are almost $1500 on sale…
Definitely!!
it's entertaining, especially coming off the acid lmao
For some strange reason, I now want a Birch mattress otherwise I’m sleeping under pigeon shit on a freeway.
Right!?!?
That's an ad for Birch if I ever heard one.
BIRCH: otherwise you're sleeping in pigeon shit.
The music behind Al's incredible ad made me laugh harder the longer it went on, that was art
Al's birch mattress might not off-gas, but there's no guarantees that I wont
Reminiscent of the Polka King
And that they got to get the tag "crime pays" for the discount had me in stitches 😂
That's not mushroom Al is it??
I think this is the first time I've ever heard Tony show appreciation for horticultural monstrosities. It's nice. Bipedal apes can do some cool stuff, occasionally.
there's far worse things a human can do than to grow weird plants.
not gonna lie i would watch a movie about how tony and al met
me too🤙
I enjoyed the Mariachi intro music A LOT. I’m a tejana now living in east coast and felt some comfort from it. Thx for producing another video loaded with knowledge!
"A clusterfuck of beautiful things!"
Fuckin' poetry
No, "a clusterfuck of [fucking] beautiful things" is poetry. But I do love Tony's filthy mouth.
Al over here filming with a lens greasier than a high school gym teacher.
The laboratory is amazingly insane. So many shapes and colors, my brain really couldn't comprehend what I was seeing. Like a Dr. Seuss book but in real life.
Best add ever. 😂❤ you guys really get me. 😂😂
See the shirts that say, "If its plants, it's not hoarding!"
I talk to my chickens. I don't talk to my orchids. I like my orchids more than the chickens. Do you think I should talk to the orchids? The chickens answer me. Orchids have never said anything. Do you think it"s because I don"t talk to them? Maybe I should start talking to them
chickens are delicious! Orchids are kind of vanilla
They wouldn't respond because they're jealous of the chickens 😄
personally surprised your online persona is not more supportive of our pigeon comrades sticking it to the human tumor! if that feces washed down onto dirt it might be able to do its job as fertilizer.
Humans stay passing da buck for themselves
Yes... East Austin Succulents rejuvenates the soul!...I think of that place as my church! 💚🌵
That was a 3 minute mattress ad, and I did not skip it...
Only channel that trolls the sponsored segment. Love it!
They Troll AND successfully promote the sponsor! It's an Art Form.
I've seen others but this one goes the hardest (at phoning it in)
Totally alien to a east coast girl but fascinating. Cacti is some wild shit! Appreciate the passion in the people you find Joey, gives me hope for humanity.
Where you at KK

Nasty boy
man i love the diversity of cacti!! and i love pigeons. always bums me out how we domesticated tonnes of pigeons for human purposes and then kicked them out to become labeled as dirty pests.
and then there’s shit like the passenger pigeon - native to north america, unlike the feral rock doves - that was hunted to extinction for cheap meat. hey, sometimes i think we deserve to be shat on by street pigeons 🕊️
Rats with feathers
I Love this place and Tillery Street Nursery they share the lot with.
You guys do the only sponsored ads that I enthusiastically look forward to.
Me too! I'm actually interested in the products too.
I love how Al reads the ad like Biden reads the teleprompter 😅
@@JeffBostick222 wow, reaching there bud. 🤨
@@JeffBostick222 rent-free, 24/7/365, huh?😂
@@i-love-comountains3850Sure. I think I was comparing when he's talking slow for the actual ad.
Grow native
Smoke weed
Play video games. Those are my hobbies 😂
Plant people are under appreciated.. certain ads makingnit more evident than others. 😂😂 I guess at a certain level they're probably pushing around what doesn't fall immediately for they're lunch.. Don't hate the pigeons for keeping it real reminding you it'll never stop getting squeezed downwards. Beautiful dungeon/ cave tours btw.
A lot of people like Trichocereus because it's the most efficient mescaline source
I've grown to love them aesthetically and their presence in my yard too
They have an energy to them, and that beautiful blue color shining in the sun 🌞 its magical
I got into collecting other cacti through Trichs, now I've been growing yotes from seed and have some mamms and stuff too
My yotes have a great shady spot under my Leucophyllum frutescens
They handle Austin better than I thought, I just bring them in if it's going to freeze
The trick is having the substrate be mostly rock so it drains real quick
trichocereus also makes a good general purpose grafting stock.
As a Chicagoan who tried to get permits holy shit you’re on the dot
Another Banging Episode, Joey! Al’s ad voiceover is a fking classic. Cheers, from Southern Oregon. 🌵👌
“Passing Da Buck.” Lol
Exquisitely interesting stuff!! I really like the cacti that have varying colors displayed, whether tissue or flowers. Do all cacti flower?
Yep!
Holy shit, I gotta get one of those East Austin garbage pail kids shirts. That's sooo cool lol. I was obsessed with those as a kid. Still am
The Chicago guy is awesome!
Live in Inland northwest. I am lucky to have a native nursery called Desert Jewel, I purchased a cactus, Escobaria vivapara, Coryphantha vivapara. I have had this cactus for 3 years. They bloomed this year. So beautiful.
corp
These guys are the MVP of plants Like Tony
OMG this place is fecking *amazing!*
i want an omelet with lightly fried obregonia slices now
I'm a 42yo man that has never really been into botany but this channel is so interesting I watch every second of these videos. I'm a Houston and native so this episode is close(141 miles) to my heart😂
After seeing that ad intro I was utterly confused and thought that I should better cut back on the drugs.
Then I realised that I don't do any drugs.
Please help.
I only have a handful of cacti, but I’m sure sometimes my neighbors look out and go “that man has been crouched staring at his cactus for almost ten minutes”
My house was too dry to grow jungle plants, so I went to cacti. I am trying different types to see what likes my environment. I live in upper Michigan, so the cactus live under lights in the winter. In the summer it doesn't usually go above 80 degrees, so the South American cacti seem to like it here. We have had several nights go into the 40s. I worry about the Mexican mams, but not the Copiapoa. I mist them, but rarely water them. I really enjoyed this video, since I actually recognized the names of plants.
Weeds a Sacred Medicine.
😂gotta get a guy up there!
It's OK man we've all got a list, only of entities of course, for sure
Im sure there is no coincidence that Bird shit and Birch sound very similar in your musical accent 🤔🤔🤔
"they get up in-ehr", fijate que estos gueritos me caen super bien; keep doing what you're doing or what the shit; who gives a rat's ass, love y'all (southernly)
Moved to austin a year ago. I'm gonna check these guys out, maybe try to learn something about these plants. We routinely take for granted the wonder of life and I want to stop doing that, pause and seriously ponder how insane it is that this whole planet is just growing in the void.
I was so psyched to see these guys on this channel. I drive down every once in a while from up north and almost always come away with a new plant to add to the family!
Thank you birch
I have a REALLY hard time mentally, this time of year, and this is the first year in the last 10 that I'm not drowning myself in hard liquor and drugs.
Your videos are making the experience measurably more tolerable.🤘
If that's what it takes, keep watching. Hard to live with ghosts.
Look, Joey, I love you. I dream about you, I hope to see you one day
A succulent episode guys. Let them take over the world! They will keep you off of the nightly news. Hunter is cool but
you almost never see him respond to comments.
My brain autopiloted to that Mother of Millions Kalanchoe 👀🔥 buuuuuuuuurn it buuuuuuurn (extremely invasive here in Aus)
rhyming birch with bird shit is amazing XD
Good shit! I just subscribed to Cactus Quest's channel.
He's great! Was glad to see his channel get a plug.
Watching these plants...
My jaw is on the ground......
Absolutely love East Austin Succulents! Just took a roadtrip to Austin from Oregon in December and they were on the top of my list. I was like a kid in a candy store!
Also, Joey, it just warms my heart that you're getting a little more 'woo' with talking to your plants. You're absolutely right, they're living beings, not objects. And having been among Eric's collection, I think that additional attention really shows.
❤❤❤Island is Socotra with many endemics weard looking flora and fauna. Love your content!❤❤❤
let's go EAS!
Hey Al! Well put concept in beauropathology! Seems accountability of gov & corporations is decreasing, and esp. when communicatng digitally, not face-to-face as citizens accntbility increases.
I was raised by my grandparents and I knew 'passin the buck', 'month of sundays' and 'cooking w/ gas' by age 8.
I hope it's ok to be into both videogames and plants... And spiders. Otherwise my particular nerd bone is embarrassing.
One of my favorite places :-)
This makes me realize strongly - each region should grow the plants that are most successful in each region, not drawing down the water table to grow something that needs 100 inches of rain per year in an area that gets 10 inches per year. I'm exagerating a bit for ease of understanding, and because I'm not trying to pick out any particular locale. This should be applicable anywhere, except maybe if the local soil chemical composition happens to be especially valuable enough to ship in some water just to use that particular soil, but that condition is surely pretty rare, right?
What music do you play, Mort Garson’s Mother Earth Plantasia?
hahaha did the guy hide all the lophs for the video?
hmmm
I don't know how but it'd be great to drag your ass to Maryland and help fix our invasive problems; i've got 7-8 different ones trying to take over my yard alone
welcome to anudda episode of crime pays but bahhhtney duzznt
Goddamn bridgesii just melt in the humidity man, at the very least theyll get black leaky blisters. But you can find clones that are hardy to it and champ my environment. Eileen has never been phased by the swamp 😂
I'm amazed to find out that you now live in South Texas! How long ago did you move here?! I'm so out of the loop
saw the Botany or Death hat, looks great & ty I can't wait til it arrives. maybe you can sell a hat good for the texas heat one day too, i'd love a good sun resistant hat even if it cost 200$.
Nice to see Cactus Quest. He shows some amazing cacti. Also great cactus growing info
I fucking LOVE THESE but im in Scotland and no way could I afford the heating to grow these, have a ton of succulents but not like these - they stay dinky and barely get water for fear of rot. Cool rainforest epiphytes etc love it here tho
I'm sure the British Cactus and Succulent Society could help you overcome your environmental conditions. You'd be amazed at what you can do under a typical fluorescent shop light.
@@yaddahaysmarmalite4059 thank you! I'll have a look
Yea yea yea. Talk about how humans are fukin the Earth, thats true, though humans are only humans, we aint machines.
I know it’s never gonna happen but I’d love to see Tony’s personal collection
I’ve seen a couple piles of bird poop in some of the apartment complexes I deliver to and all I can think is that it’d be a great soil amendment. It’s the reason they built pigeon towers in Iran.
I love this dudes use of toy snakes, great aesthetics. I do it too
I looked up that book Ariocarpus Et Cetera to see how much it was and Amazon is selling one for 4,995$ 😂😂😂 I think it’s more likely around 80$😅
Gross. Check libgen.is hopefully somebody pirates it and uploads it
Enjoyed this tour! Holly shit.
That was some cool stuff. Love seeing a passion flourish. You guys touching every cactus! Haha always makes me recognize how brave and knowledgeable you gotta be to touch em just right. In nature I pick up a nice stick to tickle the plants I shouldn’t touch. Something about cactuses.. I just want to touch them so bad.
Oh man horse cripplers how sad
A+ content as always tony, aloha~
I am a cactus hugger.🌵
Love this nursery stop by and get some trichos every time I am in town.
4:00 Looks like Tony is caressing Roy's beard 😂
Look at this guy at the Irving Park El station
If they had some kind of lattice work under the bridges sturdy enough for stray cats to navigate…maybe there would be fewer pigeons.
Fewer pigeons, more toxoplasmosis
And Pizza should not take an Hour to bake.
He said "I love Mexican mineatures" my broken ass brain thought "ping pong balls?"
Great video, thanks again!
Anyone know what he's saying at 29:39? I can't make it out, but it kind of sounds like banded shale?
Expanded Shale, which I think means blasted in a kiln. Turns out its kind of a lousy additive.
Roy! That's my boy right there!!
DISC GOLF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LETS GO!!!!!!!!!
Bro just chopped that euphorb to show you the sap 😂
well the pigeons are TRICKY
Love the thumbnail art!
37:45 why plants feels like art
Dat mf Al!!!
WHY IS THE ACENT SO CHARMING? Hilarious Nad cute, too!😂😂
I'm curious about who was the mentor who was the best echeveria grower?
I say Jim Small in Bastrop. He was Lost Pines Nursery.
I'm mostly in to Philodendrons but I've started a small cactus collection. I don't know what kind - 2 of them are very hairy but they look different from each other. One of my other cactus is blue with chevron stripes, and one has the longest thorns I've ever seen. I've had them for a couple of years and it's just so satisfying to see them grow every year. I mean it's such a low effort plant and adds so much to a space. So fascinating to see a green house that specializes in these. So awesome.
Ended on a perfect note.
Just skip to 4.0...
God I miss The Nook!
yeah that's super fucking weird why in the world would people want them trichs so bad
Dude cause like it's got mescaline in it dude you can like get high with it dude pretty cool melt it down puke and feel weird for a few hours pretty cool dude nothing else interesting about the plant
@@CrimePaysButBotanyDoesnt I'm a devout christian man and my gahd tells me that the mescaline doesn't actually exist it just demons hiding in the plants and when jebus comes down for round 2 all of them are going to be expelled out the firmament so idk about that
this is a top 5 episode
What a cool place
30:30 Ya might want to have a doctor take a look at that...🔍🧐
Did you pick on him for having a collection
Oooh somebody's sensitive
